OK I admit, until recently I knew what the word NERF meant but I was not familiar with its origins, but then it struck me NERF guns! (see link) I'm not a child, I'm not even a teenager anymore so playing with toys is really not my thing at the moment, thats why this had not occured to me.
Linkage
So to clarify, if you were to take a real gun that fired real bullets and 'nerfed' it, it would no longer fire real bullets but huge foam pellets instead (that would stick to your forehead if a little saliva is applied to the front and if fired correctly), this would make it very hard to kill anyone with it.
Please note that this is just my guess as to how this NERF word creeped into gaming, if anyone has any solid proof or perhaps another theory I'd be interested in hearing it.
Please feel free to move this into off topic or whatever if needed, Thank You.

You see,the word nerf origins date back to the earlyest days of earth. In the beggining, the universe was nerfed, thus exploding and creating lots of ¦¦matter``.One random day,a uknown entity, decided to ¦¦boost it``,thus uniting the matter, creating what we today know as the current state of reality.Life erupted on earth, giving birth to the dinosaurs.Ancient scripts, recently uncrypted, state that a superior being, that they called ¦¦TomB``,arrived with a huge wooden stick, that they called ¦¦Bat``.Then something suddenly happened..
Hardly legible, and with many still unknown writings, ancients state last words of the being before everything exploded again for some reason:
-Thou shallt be nerfed
And so it began..

I'm sure someone else knows the exact origins but I believe I read that the Nerf phrase came back from UO days (okay it was EQ according to the Wiki) when Devs were balancing. Some people didn't like their abilities being made less useful than they were, so they said they were nerfed, yes like the toys. The phrase stuck and here we are today.

almost but not quite. it goes back to uo yes, when they were balancing. at one point swords got nerfed very badly, and everyone was saying "its like we're fighting with nerf bats"
it stuck.

I guess I'd be showing my age, but I remember the "nerf bat" that hasbro made awhile back. I checked a lot of links and could only find the def:
A trademark used for a variety of foam rubber toys;
as well as the following picture of a modern nerf bat(you have to scroll down to "ct" post.)
Nerf bat
But in searching other sites, the reference is always to a nerf bat, not a gun.
Strangely I could only find one reference to this bat on the Hasbro web site, makes me think that they don't sell them in the US because of potential law suits?

They don't sell them anymore because TomB bought their entire stocks for the next 30 years. ______________________

Actaully I once installed a demo-version of a Nerf FPS. Don't know if you died or something when being shot.
It must have been crap though since I can't remember much of it.

What do you mean not being a teenager so you don't play with toys!
One: You play Eve. Definitely a toy. ;)
Two: My room mates and I (They're 21, I'm 23) had a Nerf war in the house the other day. We were grocery shopping at walmart, and we couldn't resist, LOL. So we got home , turned out all the lights, and put on the Event Horizon sound track (spooky and building music) so loud that you didn't REALLY have to try to be quiet, and did some 2 on 1 hide and seek, hahaah. Complete nerdery? Of course. Tons of fun? Definitely.

Its an interesting connection you made here. I have obviously heard of things getting NERFed in game and I have heard of NERF toys but never made the connection myself.
Interestingly NERF is seen as the soft foam plastic material that the ammunition is made from. It seems to have a history that goes back 30 years or so, but in derect connection to weapons it only goes back to the mid 90's
