One more bit for the OP: there are a couple of things that the stellar map can show that might be helpful for you in finding a good claim. Check "average number of players in space in last half-hour" (or similar; I'm quoting from memory), and the number of player kills. That may lead to a nice out-of-the-way place where you can mine in relative peace. (I have a favorite corner, but it's not something I like to shout out in public.)
You can also check those stats offline, using evemaps.dotlan.net - which will also give an estimate of what types of ore are available, and how many belts you'll find. It's advisable to avoid systems containing ice anomalies (formerly ice belts); veterans are often hungry for ice products, which means heavy competition for the ice asteroids and fertile ground for gankers, who may well set up shop in ice systems and prey on belt miners while waiting for the ice anomalies to respawn. Here is a good rule of thumb:
Every destroyer brought to gank you will do: In 0.5: 10k damage before they die. In 0.6: 8k damage before they die. In 0.7: 6k damage before they die.
If your fit has 25k EHP, it will take 3 destroyers to pop your ship before concord arrives in a 0.5. If you have 55k EHP, it will take 6 dessies. Truthfully, the more dessies they bring, the less efficient they are at getting damage on you, meaning it often takes more than 6 dessies to gank that skiff in a 0.5.
Fit however you want, but these are the guidelines I use for my own mining vessels:
If it is a very quite area, I'll use an Medium Shield Extender-fit Mack with ~35k EHP. If it is a very active area, I'll use a yield-fit Skiff with ~55k EHP.
I always fit a survey scanner to make mining more efficient.
Don't fly what you can't afford to lose. And realize sometimes your just going to be attacked and die. I've been attacked about half a dozen times, but have not lost a ship yet.

Lots of advice here for you. I'll just add a couple of general notes.
Stay out of Caldari space. It's not instant death or anything, but the aggravation factor goes up the closer you get to Jita.
Unless you're flying a Hulk or Mack, don't worry too much about getting ganked. Just save enough ISK for a couple replacement ships/mods in your wallet and then don't sweat it too bad.
Use Dotlan to lookup your eventual home region. Note the number of jumps per 24hrs. This is a relatively good indicator of how "busy" an area is. Find a quiet corner and get to work.
Gank paranoia is not a bad thing to have, but at some point in your EVE career you'll have to start thinking about ship losses as a business expense. Measure your degree of paranoia against the actual likelihood of ganking and increase your overall enjoyment of the game.
Never pay ransoms. Ever. It only serves to mark you as someone who can be intimidated. You will become an ATM for your aggressors.

The help people have been giving is just amazing 10/10 for the community here.
I've just managed to get the ISK for two fully rigged Procurer's using this setup mentioned by "Shiloh Templeton".
"strip miner 1
Survey Scanner EM Ward Field II 2 x Adaptive Invulnerability Field II
2 x Mining Laser Upgrade 1
2 x Medium Core Defense Field Extender 1 Medium anti-thermal screen Reinforcer 1"
but I've swapped out the II for I currently while I train my skills up a bit more, so when I first get into my barge in a few days it will a bit weaker till I can use the II versions. I hope this is a good fitting but if not just let me know as I still have a fair bit of ISK left if I should swap anything out with another part.
Again I'm loving the Eve community already. :)

Looks like your skills are coming along nicely with that fit. You might get a DCU to keep in reserve in case you feel you need extra protection based on recent activity in your system (check you system/region in zkillboard daily looking for any mining barge attacks in your area -- add the perps to your contact list with a red or orange status). If you have isk left over you might invest in ice mining equipment for variety. After that save for a Miasmos so you can haul your ore quickly to a station/trade hub other than Jita to maximize earnings. |

@ OP Mine your lil heart out. I love mining, relaxing, bring in the isk- train up - buy bigger ships- bring in more isk. I mine about 50% of my time in eve. been playing almost 5 months now. Haven't been even looked at twice from a ganker- only time I lost my ship was when I took my retty into a wormhole (don't be lured by the shiny ore) so always watch your back, but don't be sweatin' mine and have fun. also pay attention to WHAT you're mining. Check ore prices per m3 (each ore unit has different volume and worth) once I realized that- $ got better happy mining |
