It's taken me almost 4 months to realize that i'm just guessing what the numbers mean when i look at info like "base shied damage" and "base armor damage"
I am wanting to compare phased plasma projectile rounds to Titanium Sabot rounds (both large in this case)
But i don't know how all the variables play out.
Titanium Sabot L
volume: blah Charge size: blahblah Used with: proj weapons tech level: 1 tracking speed: ooooo, 1.2x exp. damage: 8 kin damage: 24 range bonus: 0% base shield damage: 17.6 base armor damage: 25.2
Phased Plasma L
volume: blah Charge size: blahblah Used with: proj weapons tech level: 1 tracking mult.: 1x kin damage: 8 therm damage: 40 range bonus: -50% (optimal) which is like 3km to autocannons base shield damage: 36.8 base armor damage: 32
according to: http://eve.grismar.net/rats/?navigate_rat_nav=next
gurista's have an average kinetic resistance of 29%, therm resist of 38% and an explosive of 48%.
which leads me to believe that without any sort of damage bonuses from sp or ship mods, 1 round of plasma should do 5.68 kin damage plus 24.8 therm damage... I have no idea how base shield or armor damage is applied to this... I believe it's a rather open and shut case between plasma and titanium rounds with plasma coming out on top.
However, how do i go about comparing it to something like EMP L or fusion L? or even how would plasma compare to the use emp/fusion with a change up when shields are depleted?
what does base damage mean!?!?!
edit: i have assumptions about how it works, but i don't have a clue how to prove or dissprove it... |

You can ignore base shield and armor damage. They are based on hypothetical resists. They are provided only for a hand-waving sort of rough comparison.
What really matters is the actually damage done and the damage type.
Example, all that matters is:
Titanium Sabot L tracking speed: ooooo, 1.2x exp. damage: 8 kin damage: 24 range bonus: 0%
Phased Plasma L tracking mult.: 1x kin damage: 8 therm damage: 40 range bonus: -50% (optimal) which is like 3km to autocannons |

Generally you want to ascertain the following about ammo:
- Is it long or short range for the ammo size? - What is its therm/EM/Exp/Kin damage? Most ammo does two types of damage, drones generally do one, and missiles can do any single type. - Does it track better or worse than usual for the size? - Does it have any special side effects (can only be used in tech 2 weapons; causes reduced capactior regen; etc).
As an example, look at Spike M - it has the longest range of any medium railgun ammo and poor tracking, and does a mix of Kinetic and Thermic damage with a moderate total amount. Javelin M is the opposite - poor range, good tracking, huge damage.
Carry two ammo types to begin - one for short range and one for long. Use faction ammo if you are expecting to fight players and standard ammo for rats at first. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=238931 - an idea for a new form of hybrid PVE/PVP content. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=318489 - Proposal for a new type of tech 2 Destroyer If you want to mine in highsec, read www.minerbumping.com. |

if you are missioning google:
Eve survival - it will tell you what damage and resistance missions have. You can match ammo up with that selection (and your tank).

I was mostly curious because i wanted to better understand the mechanics that determine how much i'm hitting a given target for.
For example, i understand that Phased Plasma L with it's 8 kin and 40 therm will out perform EMP L with 38 em 8 therm and 4 kin when i'm attacking any given Gurista ship, but i wasn't sure if it was purely based upon the "elemental damage" or if the listed base damage played into it.
I may have missed a nugget of information on this topic as i was searching the web as there are a ton of sites out there and not many of them ever address base damage. Naturally this lead to my assumption that base damage was moot and only the elemental damage comes into play, but that's just an assumption.
Based upon the responses i've seen here, i am willing to call it a solid theory now.
As for how it's all calculated out and what that math is supposed to look like, I'm still looking that up, i'm sure it's out there some where. Not that i am going to calculate out every possible combo for every possible target, i just want to understand better how my damage is what it is. I think it would make the decision on what ammo to use and when a bit easier.
i'm aware that there are plenty of sites that already state your best ammo options for any given faction, it would just feel kool to know i can also figure it out for myself, that comes from knowing what does what and why. |

side note, this pyfa that mr. Cabalander spoke of... is it enough like eft that using both would be redundant or do each fill information niches that lend to a better understanding of game mechanics? |

Pyfa's main advantage is that it does not require Windows, but runs on any modern computer. (Including, but not limited to, Windows, Mac & Linux.) It only depends on Python, which has been ported to almost any system.
Other than that, they are very similar and most persons only use one of them. |

Engagement range matters more almost always than the stated damage numbers on the ammo.
Against a close range target that is moving, Antimatter S will outperform Spike S by far, because the Spike ammo will miss much more often due to its relatively poor tracking. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=238931 - an idea for a new form of hybrid PVE/PVP content. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=318489 - Proposal for a new type of tech 2 Destroyer If you want to mine in highsec, read www.minerbumping.com. |
