Hello I`m a new EVE player that started 4 days ago. Atm i have little spare time so I decided to start AFK mining to stockpile some ISK ( did spend ISK on memory intelligence +3 implants). Read the Hadala v3.0 mining guide + the wiki updated for the Venture. All my skills + fittings and items are copy paste based with very little understanding of the logic behind them. I bought a Misasmos for ore hauling to start with. My goal is to mine in 0.6 sector (Raneilles atm) with tanking pirates (Serpentis watchmen atm) while my hobgoblins take them out. Questions:
1) Should i keep fitting for passive thermal resistance since serpentis use thermal 2)Are hobgoblins the best choice 3)I get sometimes random router restarts can I build Venture to survive 5 min afk while being attacked by Serpentis 4)What barge to save money for - subquestion max refining first and sell minerals or sell ore (stockpiling ore atm omber mainly)
I will be afk for 16 hours so please don't be mad if i don't answer your questions. Skills in quee atm Science IV and Jury Rigging III

It's better if you don't advetise that you are regularly afk in the belts, just fyi.
1 - Serpentis rats do Kenetic/Thermal. You should also maybe bare in mind you can be attacked by players as well as rats even in high security space and tank accordingly especially if you're mining AFK.
2 - Yeah for the rats i'd use hobs.
3 - Assuming you are not currently warp scrambled (rats in hisec belts don't) your ship will attempt to warp out when you lose connection. If your ship disappears or remains in space depends on your current combat flags.
4 - After Venture you probably want to skill for a Retriever mining barge.
5 - If you have maxed refining skills it's probably better to refine before you sell. I think (never been a miner) you might want to consider that your standings with a corp effect your refining yeild in their stations as well as skills, though someone with more experience should clarify that for you.
First point again - If you regularly AFK mine you will likely be repeatedly killed by other players and return to the keyboard shipless. Yes even in High Security space. It's always better to fit passive tank for mining because you won't have time to turn on your tank if you get ganked by players. Their goal is to kill you as fast as possible before CONCORD arrives, so they'll be able to kill you in one or two volleys before you even know what is happening. And you can't just leave your active tank running (see 10 seconds of cap). www.ensignyooch.wordpress.com

Hi!
Announcing you are AFK mining on the forums is a very bad idea. Some people will run a locator agent on you and come blow you up just for giggles.
1) Thermal is good, as is kinetic, since the most common ganker ships do thermal and kinetic, although occasionally they will use EM projectiles. NPC pirates in high sec aren't really a threat as long as you have a couple drones. There are shield mods that are passive and don't use power, they are under "shield amplifier"...not to be confused with "shield boost amplifier". Unfortunately, they are only good for one damage type, but they can be improved through the various "shield compensation" skills.
2) Hobgoblins are probably the most widely used, because most NPCs are at least somewhat vulnerable to thermal damage.
3) I was in a Venture for such a short time before I upgraded, so I can't be sure, but again as long as your drones are out, you should be OK.
4) Procuror is the "safe" choice for your first barge, especially since you just put a target on yourself. It is cheaper than a Retriever, and has a ton more EHP. The downside to the Procuror is a small ore bay, which means more trips to station to unload, and less AFK time. Never, ever use a Covetor or Hulk unless you are in a corp mining op, because they are more fragile than a Retriever, and require even more frequent emptying. Until your refining skills are good and your standing with whatever NPC corp owns the station you operate out of is high enough to get near perfect return out of refining, you will probably be better off selling the ore than refining. |

Since all the good advice has already been given I will throw in a couple abstract pieces. 1. Pay attention to the system you are mining in. CONCORD (i.e. the npc police that instant kill other people that are attacking you - i.e. players) have different response times depending on the system security status. In 1.0 they will show up pretty much instantly. In .5 you can have up to a 20 second wait. which brings me to...
2. If you are mining, especially afk mining, eventually someone is going to grab a DPS fit catalyst and try to kill you before concord arrives. It doesn't happen often, you may never experience it, but be aware of it. |

Do not do anything AFK in space. Period. It will lead to destruction of your assets.
But as you stated you AFK mine AND where you do that;

Part of EVE's problem is that there are a lot of mechanics, like mining, that are basically "hurry up and wait" - with the capability to bore you to death if all goes well, only getting "interesting" if something goes horribly wrong. And there are a lot of people who will take advantage of the fact that mining, while critical to the industrial backbone of EVE, can bore people to tears to the degree that they feel they're better off going AFK.
First of all, the OP has probably just shot up a flare for any gankers perusing this forum. You're going to want to find new harvesting grounds as soon as possible - you should consider Raneilles to be hostile territory for several weeks at least.
Second, solo mining has the risk of boring you to tears, but if you find an industrial corp to mine with, the time can pass a lot more enjoyably - in the past, I found that a mining operation was often like gathering with a bunch of friends to share beers after work, with the chatter on voice comms combined with the light work made by many hands, and the ability to trade off the watchdog role.
(One good way to look for an industrial corp is to check the corp tags of a group that's mining together, get info on them, and see if they're recruiting. Not all of them will be, but it can't hurt.) The Limited Adaptive Invulnerability Field I is a good choice to start off with and you should have no problem having it turned on all the time. Get into a Procurer barge as soon as possible if you want to mine.
1) Leaving your computer to AFK mine is not a good idea.
2) Admitting to 1 is an even worse idea.
3) If you post on these forums with your in game character people can figure out where you are in the game - so don't post comments that might want to make people target you (some players enjoy that sort of hunting), or use one of your extra character slots to create a posting alt that has no skill points and post anything you want.
4) If someone does blow up your mining ship, don't post angry or pitiful comments about it in local as they'll love it. |

4: what barge to save up for? Well, the retriever is a good first barge, but what you really wanna aim for is a nice mackinaw or hulk, imo. |

Hello EveGÇÖrs,
I am still in my cradle playing this game, 4 days old as well. I already have my little Venture and started mining while I go through the different setting of the game and study all the buttons. Figured I would mine in the background while I learn, but now I hit a snag. At first I thought to skill train for mining and get good at it, but what I found is a slew of different skills on the subject and I am not sure if I should max out on some or or just try them all at level 1. I want to go from Ore to ice then to gas. Ore being of course the main one for now. I was thinking of joining a Corp to avoid the refining once I get good at collecting the raw stuff. Knowing that I would not get as much profit, but would feel good about being in a group.
Any suggestions?
I know putting info below will feed hunters of noobs, but all is fair in Spaaaace! So far in the game I have working 2 miner I 2 Mining drones 1 small shield extender Its not much, but growing with more isk |

To give my 2ct advice after you revealed your play style (AFK mining)...
...change your play style immediate. Stop mining until the gankers forgot that you exist.
Do the Career Agents (find them by opening HELP) to earn ships, skill books and money. Run the Sisters Epic Arc with a destroyer you earn from the carreer agents. This Arc force you to move a lot through the galaxy, so you don't stay long at one place. Additional you earn ISK, loot and NPC corp / faction standing by running the Arc.
Then choose a system and NPC corp you want to make your home and run missions for the NPC corp. To raise standings with the corp to 6.67. Your ore refining fee will be zero with this standing. So after several weeks hopefully you will be safe again if you like to start mining anew.

Damn so much censoring going on *shrug*
Well ok I will play along, OP, if you really want a sincere suggestion, here me out:
DO NOT AFK MINE. AND USE PROCURER(for mining barge) avoid Mackinaw (Exhumer). Tank your ship, use EFT tool if you want to determine your EHP the higher the better and lesser chance of being ganked.
1) Procurers are harder to gank. Retrievers are easier.
2) Mackinaws are no:1 priority on my gank list.
3) People would use Ship Scanner modules to see what modules does your ship have. If they are solo hunting and see you tanked up they will move on to other easier targets. But if they are in a fleet with other destroyers I can't promise that it will prevent anything.
4) Use common sense, if you see flashing reds on local chat and/or when you check the star map statistics for that system and see a lot of ship/pod kills in 24 hours with a huge red glow then avoid mining in that system.
5) Hire people for scouting or mercenaries to gank the gankers for you (for a price)
I hope this post will not get censored also. Did my best ISD Ezwal. Nobody can claim he wasn't warned. Enough said...
Edit: I would care less about this post but I decided to give my best answers as far as I could manage to give. 2 reasons, first he is a new player and that's always good for the community, second yesterday I ganked a guy who just bought his Hulk and undocked it. I felt sorry about it and reimbursed him. I'm not a bad man. http://www.minerbumping.com/p/the-code.html |

Just came to point out that any gankerers are able a warp disruptors too. Also, ganks happen way faster than half-afk person will react, mostly. Its not minutes, its seconds. So if you play and are in space, be active. :) |
