You've apparently never played any other MMOs where the term has a different meaning than it does in an RTS.
Human wave tactics don't necessarily have to overwhelm by sending everyone at once, if those who are killed can keep rushing back into the fray with no delay. Strength of numbers is assured when death has no penalty.

zerging is zerging because its what zergs did. employing other tactics not employed by zergs is not zerging, because zergs didn't do them.
if you have to explain a term because you are being misunderstood, it is likely you should have found a better term in the first place

Did you ever actually play Starcraft? Or was it before your time?
You needn't send all your Zerglings in a single wave, if you can constantly produce them and keep them pouring into to the front.
If you understood the meaning implied by the term I was using, you should have better things to do with your time than to split hairs.

Anyway, to the op - yes the death penalty is harsh, but that's what strikes the fear of god into you as you exit warp with a small group of corpmates to find a well setup hostile gate camp. Similarly, it's what makes you shout with joy when your armour tank holds out for that extra few seconds and the enemy's ship crumples under your last few rounds.
Put simply, Eve will probably shorten your life with the number of heart scares you'll get, but then, so does eating salt, but chips taste crap without it.

I'm perfectly calm, just seeking to be understood by someone to whom I've already clarified my meaning.

What hippoking is describing is a "tank rush" typically found in C&C where production was slower than in starcraft. A tank rush is sending everything at once at an opponent. Zerging is sending waves upon waves against an opponent, replenishing lost units as fast as... or faster than they are being killed. C&C couldnt do that (except possibly infantry... but then it wouldnt be a tank rush).
At least thats my understanding of it. Very often people make the mistake of combining the two terms, "zerg rush" when in fact theres no such thing. ----- If you kill all the wolves, your gonna end up with a crapload of bunnies, and by bunnies I mean stupid people Eve & Linux Woot! |

Perhaps your right... but I just lost my ship, and dont feel like playing anymore! I will probably get over it and start playing again though to be honest
All the classic symptoms of incipient Eve-addiction. No known cure, the subject may have some natural immunity from the evidence of his first post but the prognosis is not good - he's already started paying for his habit. My advice would be to just accept it and buy a 6 month supply now to save money.

rawr... 4 ling rush 4tw.
Maybe the term has morphed into a slightly different meaning but the zergling rush was never used to describe the whole race, it was a starting build to get 4 or 6 zerglings out as fast as possible.
...but anyway, people actually like to play games where they lose nothing if they die? How boring.

That was my understanding of the term, as well. Which is why I compared MMO PvP without consequence to zerging. Get killed, run right back into the fight... in games like that, death is meaningless, so PvP is meaningless.
I'd hate to see EVE go the way of SWG, or become pointless like WoW.

lol, thats great. Didn't see the right click menu right away though. Nice way to use Windows to commit the ultimate sacrifice to the "Night Mother" (If you haven't played Oblivion, you won't have a clue)

Edited by: Tiel Nova on 10/04/2006 05:31:11 Edited by: Tiel Nova on 10/04/2006 05:29:44 You know, I just HAVE to throw in my two cents.
The "Zerg Rush" WAS/IS a term used, but it's not quite the same as "Zerging". Whereas I never actually did any "Zerging" in my Starcraft days, the Hydralisk Rush was a favorite of mine after getting schooled while playing protoss and rematching my opponent. And it's not JUST Zerglings that these terms apply to, but any Zerg unit (Although I can't see it being feasible to do it with anything other than zerglings or hydras).
I remember one time I got bogged down in a match and was trying to win with a whole crapload of hydras. Then I saw his fleet of battlecruisers and wept. That was the worst defeat I've ever suffered because it was so humiliating. :P
-edit: Just like to add the moral of the story: If you're doing something wrong, trying harder at doing the wrong thing does not help you do the right thing. :P

No, its fine. L2P.
In WoW, your goal was to pimp your character with the most uber and most expensive gear you could find, since that gear was essentially indestructible, and gear gathering was all you could do once you had gotten over the levelling part.
EVE is not like that.
In EVE, going out of your way and buying the most shiny and uber modules to your ships is a sure way to lose all of your ISK in a spectacular 'BOOM' somewhere. Ships and modules are just tools, and buying a 100 Mil frigate when a 5 Mil setup would do the same job while your net worth is 100 Mil is just asking for trouble. Think EVE ship+modules as WoW's healing potion, NOT purple sword of doom. Ships and modules are expendable means towards a goal. Only fly what you can afford to lose.
T1 modules and T1 ships are so cheap, that once you get the hang of the game and your skills up, losing one is not a big deal - heck, I almost never insure my ships because of the miniscule difference between autoinsurance and platinum, and the fact that Insurance isn't forever - it's valid for 3 months. Feels too much like 'betting that I lose my ship'.
Now if you stay as an empire carebear, once you know what you are doing in missions etc, you can go all nuts with WoW-style 'pimp my ride' item gathering spree (while remembering that being stupid can reduce your net worth a LOT in one boom), but that's not really what EVE is all about. Once you get over your materialistic needs, successfully get into 0.0 gameplay (this step is very hard for many people who don't like that they can't play EVE as a single player game anymore), you'll understand what I mean.
EVE is definitely not WoW, and that is a very good thing which should not change.

if blizzard made eve ,everyone would be mining 1.0 veldspar roids in titans but ofcourse they would have to do the same dungeon 1000 times in a row before they actually got there 0.1% chance of drop titan.
