Is there anything to be aware of if doing this? I've trained up caldari but now I wanna train minmatar. Just wondered if this had any negative impact other than redundancy in spaceship command and "wasted time".

No negative impact at all, except for the "wasted time".
Some spaceships even require you to train two different factions. (So called 'pirate' spaceships - they are usually very good and obscenely expensive.) |

What Thomas said. No reason not to train for any race, ship, or module strikes your fancy. |

As time goes on you will indeed want to train all the factions frigates and cruisers. On the other hand, when you're new, it's more a measure of whether the training benefits you right now, or if there's something else that would be more directly helpful in the short term.
But there's nothing wrong with getting up to rank 3 in every faction's cruiser, maybe battlecruiser. Doesn't take long, and it's good to have the versatility, so long as it hasn't taken long to train. But beware the weapon skills; a faction's ships aren't very useful if you can't also shoot their guns.

Also. SP are never wasted.
And there is now downside or disadvantage to flying multiple race ships. The majority of EVE players can actually fly multiple race ships.
One of the first things I do on alts is train all frigate skills to 3. Just so I can always buy any frigate on the market and use it to fly to my destination. Personal channel: Crazy Dutch Guy

All good advice, but don't forget that eve is a game of long term consequences. Wasting time now means you're that much further from other goals. Also don't forget that training for the hulls matters less than training for the fitting and weapon skills. |

Nothing against it, in the end you'll be all the better for it. What you need to be aware of: I decided long ago to make this toon perfectly crosstrained and decided to train the weapon, fitting and support skills first. Am over 110 million and I still ain't training ship skills. Should give you an idea of the task ahead of you if you want to finish what you started. Reopen the EVE gate so we can invade Serenity. Nothing wrong with cross training, just might want to make sure you have a solid base in one before branching out. If you diversify too early you will find that you may be able to fly a lot of different ships, however your skills will be mediocre in all of them thus your effectiveness will suffer. |
