Imagine...
Each time you splode another players ship a small 'x' is painted on the side of your ship. Every ten ships you splode the small markers are converted to a larger skull. Every hundred ships you splode the markers are converted to even larger skulls with crossbones.
These markers are hull-specific, and only indicate what you have killed in that specific hull -- lose the hull, lose the markers.
Now imagine, coming across another player in game and doing a 'look at' his ship, and seeing those markings. Also imagine, spinning your ship in your hangar and enjoying or screen-shotting the scores down the side of your favorite ship.
This is one of those changes that shouldn't be a big programmatic deal, yet yield a large player quality of game bump.
Imagine the form of attachment (which is currently missing) this will create between pilots and their specific ships.
Up for debate is if these would be awarded just for 'final blow', or just being part of a kill.
While ideally it can be paired with putting an alliance logo on the side as well, this idea can be implemented independantly and thus this new thread opened.

I like this idea actually. Having a few favorite ships, myself, I'd love to see them plastered with "I kill lots of people with this ship so fear me" insignia. |

Would I be able to turn it off, or would I need to throw away a set of rigs every time I decide I don't want my opponent to know I can fly the thing properly? |

This.
The last thing I want to to appear like I have any idea what I am doing whatsoever. It's more effective that way. |

Hey, i'd rather self-destruct my bait frigate and rebuild a new copy of it vs. having a obvious marking on it that implies I might have some skill.

A switch similar to awards and medals to hide these marks from the public if desired is indeed a very good idea. Would you like to know more? |

+1, but you should have a button to clear all kills from the hull so that you don't have to remove rigs and repackage or something if you don't want it. |

This change is particularly important to establish some type of emotional bond between players and hulls going forward, as Fozzie's rebalancing changes appear to be making every ship 'meh' and as bland as unsweetened oatmeal...

At this time it's impossible. The skin is static, linked to the ship and the database entry for that ship. You cannot have ships with multiple appearances while it is the same ship from the servers point of view. The only way to implement this would be to essentially create an entirely new skin and new ship from the servers view for each potential marking pattern on each hull. Each ship can also NOT be called the same thing ingame, so each kill pattern would need to have a unique name in game and in the database.
This means that there would have to be dozens of "Guardian" full skins and dozens of "Guardian" database entries, one for each different killcount pattern, and dozens of "Guardian" variants in overview filters and the like.
And then they have to create new skins for each and every killmark pattern by hand. Super time consuming.
TLDR: Not currently possible, and a massive amount of work.
Check back when and if CCP finishes the ship painting upgrades so that ships can have different skins without different names. Until then, nope. |

Of course its possible, did you totally miss the memo about them prototyping static skinning as a proof-of-concept prior to implementing dynamic skinning? (see bottom of dev post).
I would rather a dev advise on what is 'possible' or not tbh, mkay? thanks.

(see bottom of dev post). I would rather a dev advise on what is 'possible' or not tbh, mkay? thanks. Bro, go read that dev post. Like the whole thing. Then go read my post again. My statements stated qualifiers that while it was not currently possible, it might be after they completed a dynamic reskinning process and tools.
Also, the temporary static reskins for Aurum system they are implementing is not any sort of "proof-of-concept". It's an interest check to see if people are willing to pay enough to financially justify the expenditure of dev time and salary needed to implement a system where they can apply skins to an object without creating separate database entries for each variant.
We have had alternative cosmetic skins on some ships for years, what they are about to do has no basis on their ability to do what you are asking for at this time. |

If not, why.

I'm all for it personally, once the server code gets to a point where it can be implemented. It's just one of those often voiced requests that are not currently possible from a server perspective. Note I never said the the post I was against it, just that it currently was not possible.
It needed to be said, considering that the majority of this thread is frankly people either you or other people bumping it or +1ing it without understanding why ship markings have not already been implemented.
Knowing what is actually possible to be introduced without a prohibitive amount of effort and development is a rather important part of the the community discussion on a topic after all. |

An interesting twist to this idea beyond the use of 'x's or skulls showing total kills, is a breakdown of kills by class perhaps?
Like this.
Just substitute the Truck for Frigates, Radar for Cruisers, etc etc. :) Imagine the first guy to get a Titan kill marked on the side of his ship for example. Glorious.
