Talking people outside of the Rookie Help Channel (minus the 1 troll that shows up from time to time).
I kind of wonder why a game that people constantly talk about being social is so full of anti social people.
My experience is limited in this game since I only started playing recently but in my short time I've had many instances of people going out of their way to be rude or harass new players.
Perhaps if I ever find a corp to join things might look up but atm those outside of the rookie chat appear to be CS level jerkwads. |

Give it time. Even the jerkwads are often only jerkwads to folks they don't know.
Other than that i generally find plenty of good normal people to hang with. That's not to say they won't kill you and burn your mom on your grave, but that doesn't make someone a jerkwad in eve and more than checkmating someone in chess does.
Just give it a while anyway, you'll find a good crew im sure. BUDDY TRIALS - 21days + ISK bonus + Starting Assistance : https://secure.eveonline.com/trial/?invc=77facad8-d941-45ad-95bc-c1ec90919b6b&action=buddy Feel free to contact me with questions :) |

Thanks for the words of encouragement.
Being blown out of the sky isn't a big deal to me already happened twice but I'm not one to moan over being ganked by people. (minus being stalked by people with too much free time)
More than likely it is just me attracting the attention of the wrong kind of people.
I'm sure if I find a good corp it will go smoothly for me. |

Are you trying to talk in Dodixie local? (Or any other trade hub local?) Other than those, I find people quite friendly.
It will, of course, also depend on your attitude. Many people do react quite hostile to any suggestion to change EVE, especially if said suggestion would make it harder to attack someone unwilling to fight. And many will laugh at your tears if you whine about something being unfair. But if you ask a question on how things work and how you can improve, I've almost always seen positive (or at least neutral) responses. But then, I don't talk that much in local.
Except for the guys who try to enrage you so that you'll engage them in a fight where you lose. |

If you come into low-sec or null-sec... it's nothing personal. People in those areas will kill anyone they can catch no matter who they are (newbie and veteran alike).
After all... you could be an advance scout (newbies and veterans can do with with day old accounts)... a cyno-ship (only needs 1 week of training and often used by veterans)... or you are carrying something valuable (I once killed a month old Condor pilot carrying 100 million in ship mods).
That said... if you accept whatever losses you take (regardless of your circumstance) and have a relaxed attitude, people will generally be friendly. Call them names or insult them and all bets are off. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

Unlike any other MMORPG you have ever played or heard of EVE has always had less rules and less supervision from the people running this game than any other. Things in this game tend to be determined much more by the players than by the people who develop (ed) the game.
Stealing, lying, ganking noobs, harassing types of play are not only allowed but encouraged. Infiltration of other peoples guilds just for the purpose of spying, stealing, ganking, or harassment is common. Griefing in many forms are not only allowed but encouraged. Paying isk for the privilege of war decking 10 guys who mine all day in hulks is the norm not an exception. Flipping cans in high sec to get noobs to shoot at you so you could kill them were the order of the day up until fairly recently in the history of this game.
These kinds of things are what make EVE different than other games. It makes it interesting. But it also tends to draw a certain type of player in abundance to the game. Some of them are anti social. Others are just jerks. Lots like to talk smack.
That being said....
If you join a corp you will likely find folks who you do like and who you get along with. Talking in local tends to draw out the guys who can hide behind their keyboard and say anything they want to because there is little penalty for them to do so. You tend to get a more sociable element in corps in this game than you do from the guys who are just going about their business in high sec systems/ |

How to disarm jerks: agree with them, compliment them, be polite to them, and use proper diction (not slang, etc.). Using self-deprecating humour also works well.

There are many people in EVE that appear to be assholes, simply because its a part of their online persona, and especially in EVE being a "jerk" is approved and in some cases almost expected.
However, this does not mean that the people are actually assholes, and this is what you have to keep in mind. From experience i have found that in many cases those hard core, carebear hating, smack talking low life pirates are actually some of the most decent people i have ever encountered in EVE. While the people who you think should be the friendly ones (carebears) are actually the ones that will have a bad attitude, threaten you with this and that, and generally just leave you with a bad taste in the mouth if you get to know them.
Please note im not saying that all pirates are nice, or that all carebears are bad, just pointing out that someones "profession" really wont give you any indication on how they are as a person.
You also said that you have seen people who go out of their way to harass new players. If this is something that happens in rookie systems (which includes the career agent systems) you can report the person/people who are doing it since this is a bannable offense. If this is just random people you know who happened to get blown up in low sec or similar, trust me, a characters age rarely has anything to do with it and even if they were 10 year old players someone would do their very very best to blow them up as soon as they set a foot in a wh/low sec/0.0

Define jerkwards.
EVE is so far the only TRUE sandbox game I know of. In that really 99.99% of the things you can think of can be done.
Just because someone is rude...doesnt make him a jerk. Just because someone kills you...doesnt make him a jerk. Just because someone has a different playstyle the yours...doesnt make him a jerk.
EVE caters a very special type of gamer and many people that dont 'get' EVE blame it on many things. Usually forgetting its them that are the 'issue'.
Also, you will find out that a very big majority has a nice side behind that evil brick wall they threw up. As long as you stay polite and mature. A lot of players will actually dont mind taking time of to help you.
EVE is a bot Darwinsm at its best (adapt and survive or dont and die) as well as a nice mirror (people treat you as you expect people - be the friendly guy and you will receive friendly responses. Be the whining/raging/rude person, expect to be laughed at/mocked/trolledd etc etc. How people react really dependz on how you react to people.) Personal channel: Crazy Dutch Guy

What NC said.
In game personality and real personality dont always have to be the same.
Some people are nice both in game and in person (hint to the Quoted person). Some are playing the "Dark" route in game but have a great personality (hints to Cannibal Kane). Some people are just totally and completely of the "Jerk" scale both in and out of game (will hint to the first person that matches this category)

Well. People are different and thus people will behave differently.
But in my 3 years into EVE I have never come across a player that fits your description. Does this mean that they arent there...not at all.
Does this mean that it could be because how you react on things...possibly.
Does this mean that your view on things is different then mine...definately.
The above thus makes it very hard to judge who is nasty and who is nice. Just because your definition can be totally different from mine. Not even to mention that EVE is just a game and people can play totally different characters then they rsally are and personally I judge people by their personality and not their in game attitude (a friendly person to hang out with who tends to suicide gank everything that moves in EVE is a nice person in my opinion). Sorry, but this honestly made me puke in my mouth a little. Nothing personal, but I disagree with all of this extremely.
I won't start second guessing your EVE experience. That is yours to interpret as you wish. However I see so many inherent internal contradictions in all of this that it makes me queasy. I think its just best we drop the subject. You think/experience as you wish, and I as I do. |

This is also true.
You occasionally see people who are wondering why they get kicked from several corporations and such, and they have no idea why. In many cases this can be because the person in question has a bad attitude, and while some do their best to be patient with people who just drive you up the wall, everyone has a limit.
But the problem is also that often when you tell people that someone has a problem with their attitude, they will sit down, pout and say that they cant possibly be the problem and its everyone else who is wrong

In 6 years of playing I've rarely seen anyone that was downright rude outside of a) trade hub chat and b) null sec where it's just a tactic to annoy the other guys.
In any case I'm with Tau and keep it polite and respectful. |

In my 32yrs of experience, genuinely good and kind people are very few and far between. They are as valuable and precious as they are rare. This extends to EVE as well, since its the same people playing here, as are out there in day to day life.
Many people like to think of themselves as "a nice and good person", but in actually, they aren't. They just tell themselves that to feel better about themselves. To elevate their own opinion of themselves, and to, in their own mind, separate them and raise them above all those "other bad people of whom I am not one".
Being a good, kind and considerate person, is not an automatic thing. Its not a granted simple thing. It takes sacrifice and great effort on the part of those who actually embody those qualities. That is something many of the "Im a good person, really, once you get to know me" types will never understand.
And its infact the people who have such illusions about themselves (whereas their actions and intent show otherwise time and time again) that you need to be most wary of. Atleast with a blatant a$$hole you know where you stand and there is no hypocrisy.
But these self-proclaimed and self-entitled "im a good person"-types are almost always just talk. and no walk. |

OP, fit 10 t1 pvp frigs. Come to lowsec. Engage people (preferably >6 month old toons). Die (probably).
Each time you die, immediately* post 'gf' in local. Then convo the guy that killed you and say:
o/ gf I'm new to this and trying to learn, could you please give me some advice?
Warm your heart with 10 nice conversations, guaranteed (if not I'll buy you another 10 frigs).
