This Saturday at 18:00 EVE Time, CCP will be running a New Player Training Session mining fleet. As opposed to our previous fleets (which involved going out into low and null sec to PVP and flying into a wormhole to sing songs), this fleet will naturally be far more laid back. We're going to find some asteroids and mine them out. We'll be chilling out on voice comms during the event, answering questions, chatting, and maybe having one or two adult beverages. It will be an easy going time that will hopefully lead to some fun!
Here are the rules and regulations for the fleet:
- Come to Josameto III - Expert Distribution Retail Center. We will be forming up around 18:00 and aiming to depart by 18:30 EVE Time (that's UTC).
- We will be handing out free T1 fit Ventures, though you are free to bring your own ship if you wish.
- The fleet will likely run for an hour or so. After we finish the mining, we'll likely go out and see if we can't ninja-mine some wormhole gas, though we will NOT be providing the Gas Harvesters or the skill to use them.
- CCP Devs will collect the ore and we will split it evenly at the end of the fleet.
- Do not bring a ship you cannot afford to lose! Though this is CCP-sponsored (or perhaps because it is!), it's likely we'll run into more than a few people who will want to mess with us through suicide ganking, smartbombing, or otherwise being disruptive! We will teach people how to deal with such things, but we won't be reimbursing anyone for any losses or preventing anyone from doing this, so a few people ARE likely to die.
- Despite us allowing some normal interaction with the fleet, excessive attempts to disrupt or harass what is primarily a rookie-aimed training fleet will not be allowed.
- Voice comms information and the actual location we will mine in will be revealed when the fleet is ready to head out.

Glad to see you doing this. Smart way to enhance the NPE. Too bad you are now competing with E-UNI. Perhaps you could reach out to a number of the larger high sec entities to show up in Griffin's and jam any gankers who go flashy? You would need a lot.
And I am really going to be interested how you deal with the bumping griefers. You KNOW they are showing up, unless you told them to back off. Most people viewed Orwell's writings as a warning. The harper regime and the goons treat them as a guidebook. |

Seriously, I wonder where you draw the line between "normal interaction" (you are warning people of suicide ganks etc.) and "excessive attempts to disrupt or harass"?
What if there are many individual suicide gankers not striking in unison but they are still part of the same organization (like the New Order for example)? What will you do if you consider the harassment excessive?
I would consider it fair to both the newbies who come with you and the people who consider attacking them a viable playstyle to lay down the rules in a more concise manner.
Thank you |

How about this:
Maybe, just for this event, you could use your brain and think "turning off potential subscribers to the game before they get a chance to learn the game is a really bad idea", and go harass the people you normally harass.
I realize this concept of not attacking new players is difficult for you to grasp on an emotional level, but why not find some flies to pull the legs off instead? Most people viewed Orwell's writings as a warning. The harper regime and the goons treat them as a guidebook. |

I have not fired up new char in a long time, so this may be a moot point, but do new chars today start with the Mining Frigate skill? If not, you might want to bring along a bunch of those skillbooks, and maybe suggest that new players learn the skill if they don't have it already. Most people viewed Orwell's writings as a warning. Hey man, chill. You're reading me wrong.
I have never shot at a newbie knowingly. You see my corp tag? I'm in galmil, we re no griefers, we are straightforward PVPers. Damn we do our best to integrate new players right now. I am all for supporting those events. All I'm asking here is clarification so that the potential gankers know where the line will be drawn and stick to that line so that everyone involved know what they can expect.
No need to go all defensive.

Nope new players don't start with the mining frigate skill, although it is a reward for one of the tutorials.

I'm also curious where this line is. Obviously repeatedly sending waves of smartbombing battleships in to kill them would be frowned upon, but what about a single wave? Or a single smartbombing battleship? Suicide ganking miners is a part of "normal interaction" in the game and has been for a long time, so purposely giving them the impression that its disallowed/discouraged in any way shape or form by CCP is just setting them up to be unprepared for what is most likely to come if they continue mining.. Also, after the suicide gank is a great time to explain the mechanics behind it to someone who can be better prepared for it next time! Because lets face it, they're gonna get ganked sooner or later, and probably sooner than later. Really, I'm only thinking of their well being. |

Hey man, chill. You're reading me wrong. I have never shot at a newbie knowingly. Shot one in a gatecamp once but when I saw on the killmail how old he was I convoed him to explain what had just happened and then gave him a few mill for his lost ship. You see my corp tag? Sorry man. Most times I read a question like yours, it is someone seeing how far they can push the envelope in a griefing way. Glad to see you are not like that, and my apologies. Most people viewed Orwell's writings as a warning. The harper regime and the goons treat them as a guidebook. |

So CCP Eterne, what did we learn? I have a list for you:
- Initial fleet setup: not for amateurs. Also: MOTD is your friend.
- Eve voice sucks. Still. I mean, when it works, it works ok. But it's that initial getting it to work that is still flakey.
- If you're going to give away free ships, one should also bring the skillbooks that said ship requires.
- One must *share* the Orca's Ship Maintenance Bay if one wishes fleetmates to be able to extract ships. To do that, one must click the chevron. "What chevron?" I hear CCP Logibro say...
- Dividing the spoils of a mining op is an exercise in, well ..., I can't really imagine an appropriately painful comparison.
- Asking people to use "want" contracts to divide the bounty fails on several levels: Some players aren't contract-literate, *most* players aren't "want" contract literate, and trial accounts are incapable of creating contracts. And since this was a "new player" event, it stands to reason that most of the players would fall into one of those "huh?" groups.
I don't want to discourage you from having these new player experiences. And I'm glad you had one on Saturday for a change (hope your families weren't too put out). I will *gladly* help you iron out the bumps for future events.

I agree with the list above. On the point six I recommend that you prioritize developing option to divide a stack into a number of equal sized stacks (with the leftovers staying in the original stack). It would help a lot in cases like this and would be very helpful for old and new players alike. To CCP's credit, they reacted as though they should've thought of that in the first place. If nothing else, this is probably indicative of just not having done this kind if thing before. I think it worked out well enough, all things considered. |
