I have been doing exploration for some time now after coming back to eve a month or 2 ago. I have been enjoying it quite a bit.
I first started with doing combat sites in a destroyer in high sec. I then decided to try going into low sec to have a go at the relic and hacking sites. I had some successes, some failures, all went well.
Recently i have trained up the skills to fly a cov-ops frigate so i can explore in low sec in a bit more safety. All has been going well there. My question now is, whats next?
In 2 days i won't have any more skills that will really be pushing me forward to train for. I would assume that the next step is wormhole exploration. But what is the goal of that? Is it more of the same with combat? What resources am i exploiting there? What about PvP? Do i need to take friends? I read about getting an "all-in-one" exploration fit for a Tengu, is that what i should go for?
Based on all these, i am not sure what the next step is, and based on that next step, what skills should i start training now to help me move forward with that.
If anyone could give some advice on this i would appreciate it.
Thanks! |

Relic/data sites in null require a T2 scanning frig and level 4 skills. they are slightly more complex but pretty easy. WH relic site i believe contain sleepers. Sleepers are rats with better AI (they shoot drones a lot). , they often neut /scram and they have omni tanks and damage profiles. They vary in potency between the c1 wh's where they are easy to kill. To c3 wh's where u need 2-3 well tanked BC's to the c5/6 wh's that require high end fleets with logi support. They drop different but valuable loot and their salvage is worth a fortune. Null combat sites are usually done in Tengu's / ishtars and some of them have extreme damage /webs /neuting /scramming. An all in 1 tengu fit is not what you want. You want a cloaky nullified fit for travel. a scanning fit to scan and a combat fit if you intend running combat sites. A mobile depot allows you to switch fits and subsystems in space. The meta mobile depots are much harder to scan and well worth the isk. If you live in null (npc null is accessable to all and the stations can be docked in like high sec /low sec) then you can use a T2 scanning ship to scan and run relic/data sites and a Tengu to do combat sites. Loot can be stockpiled in the npc station until you are ready to move it to high sec for sale. (black frog will do this for you if you have no access to a carrier or jump freighter). If you goto wh's then assault frigs work fine for C1 and 2. A drake works fine with T2 precision missiles too and a decent passive tanked drake can solo C3 sites (anoms) but very slowly. Generally better to bring a friend or 2. With salvage each C3 wh anom is worth about 50 mill. null data and relic sites usually have 10's of mill per site and null combat sites are anything from zero to several bill isk of stuff. Be careful though. I met an all in 1 tengu fit today in a null relic site and sadly for him my stratios had been waiting inside it for prey and his tengu mods are now in my hanger. If you travel certain routes often in null make yourself loadups (bookmarks) 300 km from the gate not in line with any gate /station or celestials so that you can warp to them and avoid bubbles. Even in a cloaky nullified Tengu it is sometimes better to visually check the gate to make sure there are no signs of an especially good camp the other side. On the other hand people can overrate the risks. I often follow escalations for many many jumps into hostile space in my Tengu and even run them in hostile form up systems if i can arrange a distraction for them. Money at its root is a form of rationing. When the richest 85 people have as much wealth as the poorest 3.5 billion (50% of humanity) it is clear where the source of poverty is. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/jan/20/trickle-down-economics-broken-promise-richest-85 |

I might consider having a long term base of operations in nul. And a Tengu does seem fun. The biggest thing i have ever flown (for combat) was a t1 Cruiser. How would a tengu fit work out for this? Also, any general tips on how scanning would work out?
Lets say i live in Null, and i am in a system and scan and don't find anything, and then i jump a few systems over and find a combat site, but my tengu is 3 systems away. Whats a good way to keep the tengu safe from PvP? My scanning ship could be an obvious scout for gate camps and such, and having bookmarks to safe spots would help, is that more just a general Null-sec survival thing? |

Looking into it it looks like Tengu's also have subsystems that give you different slots? How does that sort of thing work? |

By default a Tengu doesn't have any slots at all (same btw for the Proteus, Loki and Legion).
The slot layout, amount of CPU/Powergrid, amount and recharge of capacitor etc all depends on which subsystems you fit to your strategic cruiser.

I'm gunna +1 Silvetica`s response. Pretty much nailed it down. Venturing into null and WH are a true measure to an explorer's resolve. While a multi-fit tengu will do nicely, I'd agree that a combat stratios will send the pilot walking home. see, if u have an "all in one" fit, those slots your using for hacking and scanning aren't being used for combat. And if you're being hunted...better believe his ships going weapons-free.
Your best bet? D-scan like a mother, get all scanning skills maxed for faster probing, and fly paranoid. O7 |

So the Tengu gets different slot, stats and bonuses depending on what subsytems are fitted. Assuming you are just travelling and fighting in it (not scanning or hacking). The travel offensive subsystem allows you to fit a covert ops cloak so you can warp cloaked. This is part of what keeps a travel fit tengu safe. Once you get to the system with the combat site you need to remove this subsytem and the cloak and use the accelerated ejection subsystem that turns your tengu into a dps beast. The other switch is in the propulsion subsystem. For travel you use the interdiction nullification subsystem which makes your ship immune to bubbles. It iss the cov ops cloak and this subsystem that makes travel fairly safe. Some people also stuff the lows with warp core stabs but i find i need the cargo space for missiles so i don't. Again this subsystem is useless for actually running the site and you need to change to the subsystem that increases afterburner speed. This is the heart and soul of a Tengu's tank. Low sig radius and very fast AB speed means the rats will have trouble hitting you. In fact battleships rats are the least dangerous to a tengu and are usually killed last. As an aside people use T3 fleets to kill battleship fleets in PVP too. When running sites step one is google and read the triggers /traps etc for that site. kill neuting stuff> webbing stuff> scramming stuff > elite frigs> frigs> destroyers > cruisers> battleships. Keep you AB running at all times and try and stay well clear of the warp in spot.
Dscan for probes (combat and normal) but be aware that people like my friends/me will happily sit in a site cloaked waiting for you to come along so we can kill/ pod and loot you. I generally only do it when part of breaking the morale of our current targets but the Tengu i caught yesterday was just passing through and was unlucky that i was there and waiting for the sov owners to run the site. Some of my friends do similar things as a passtime and they run relic sites mainly for all the buzzard/astero kills it gets them. The huge advantage of having a base in null is you get to know the locals. Which players hunt and how they hunt. Who are the cyno alts waiting do tackle and drop a fleet on you. Who is travelling, ratting etc. Knowledge of who is doing what and why makes it much easier to run stuff in hostile space especially with people wandering in and out of local all the time. What's your endgame here?
Is it to become the ultimate elusive solo-explorer/nomad, slipping in and out of lowsec, nullsec, and wormhole space at will and making your money while avoiding being caught?
Or is it more PvP oriented? Or are you looking to join or lead a group eventually?
Depending on your goals, your skill focus will be different.
P.S. look into ninja gas mining if you're seriously interested in the solo wormhole life. You can read up on it just searching on Google or YouTube, or reading the Eve University wiki entry on it. |

The next direct advancement would be ghost sites. These are exploration sites which have been introduced recently.
For these you need some tank, read you can't use a covops. They yield very valuable loot but have a good chance to blow up your ship. You should check it out, they are adrenaline pushing. Also the loot is at some point going to be used for player build stargates.
As upgrades for ships, if you have plenty of isk and you feel safe, get a stratios. It can do "everything" and with the new mobile depots you can actually do everything. For traveling you just take your combat fit and if you are in "safe nullsec" you switch to exploration gear using the mobile depot. You can even do combat sites.
An alternative would be the ishtar. |

They are rare but I found several already. A few in hisec, while I was doing something else - so I just activated their countdown so no one can do them.
Found one in nullsec (if you go to the correct places you should find more here) and also one in a WH. |

Not so sure about that part, have seen many a tanky frig get blapped in a c1 or c2 assuming the rats will act like in empire space. Extreme fast tracking on sleepers makes them deadly to small ships generally, even in low class wh.
