Still having what seems to be the "Blank Screen" problem, not sure if/how that relates to "Black Screen" problem, but it seems possible it's related?
I'm running a latest model Macbook Pro Retina 15 Running Mavericks (10.9.1) with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M GPU, 16 GB RAM, all drivers and system up to date.
I frequently have a second monitor attached via thunderbolt to VGA adapter, a Viewsonic AV 2012wb, but the problem happens whether that monitor is attached or not, even if it's not been attached since a reboot.
It has occasionally worked after patches are rolled out, but rarely twice in a row and not in over a week.
Sequence of events:
Launcher comes up, I log in. Once the patch applies (if there is one atm), I click "Play".
Button turns to "Launching"
New Icon appears on the dock, vanishes and another popps up.
A few seconds later the background/ambient music starts but there is NO window visible.
If I right click on the second Eve icon on the dock (the first being the launcher the second being the app itself) and go to "Show all windows" and scroll across the empty screen a blue highlighted box appears where there SHOULD be a window.
This is the same exact symptoms I've been seeing ever since I signed up for the trial. I really enjoy what I've seen of the game, when the client actually works. I've been looking for a deeper MMO (most of the current crop are soooo shallow/simple/twitchfestish) for sometime and would LIKE to be able to play this with my Sci-Fi focused 12 year old, in fact I've gone ahead and subscribed for 3 months with the HOPE that the bug will get fixed so we can play together.
We've cobbled together a wine based solution but it seems pretty shaky and awkward to use (mainly because I'm not really familiar with working with wine emulation and keep getting winsock errors). Part of my concern with the wine based solution is that my connection won't be showing that I have client issues, when really the client is totally broken and I've had to give up and juggle work arounds to see if this is a game I want to really put some time into, let alone whether it will be a good option for my gaming with my son.
Anyway, if anyone has any tips or suggestions on how to proceed I'd really appreciate the feedback. Thanks...

Still having the same exact problem, tried each day and it keep applying patches, but still no visible window. I've tried going into system prefs under Energy Saver and setting it to always use the discrete GPU instead of the integrated graphics, but no joy.
Help?

The game plays and displays correctly when I switched my display to "best for display" instead of scaled. It also works with scaled selected if the setting is at "best (retina)" instead of "more space", where it usually is. This is on a pro with retina with no external displays connected. |

I would suggest running disk utility. This sounds like the hanging problem I have had of late with the client.
Disk utility is applications > unities. Then run a repair on your promissions. Also, try a pram reset Ah at start up hold cmd-p-r (I think)
There is a 3rd party app OnyX that I normally use once a week or a month to help keep the cluster **** build up of junk and issues off my mac. Let me know if this helps anyone. xoxo Amarisen Gream

This appears to be the root cause. When I tried to play with the screen set to the "Scaled" settings I normally use (IOW using the display at full resolution), I get the "blank window" problem. When I kill the app in Activity Monitor, change to "Best for display" in Sys Prefs -> Displays, and relaunch *poof* it all works.
Hopefully this helps someone else down the road, and my thanks to Jean Iridus! :)

Me too.
The client is clearly running - if I press command-Q, Enter it quits.
Reboot works, but is not acceptable as a solution

I was having this problem too. I got directed toward this thread by GM Akilian.
I'm on a 13" MacBook Pro (Retina). Generally I have my screen set onto the 'More Space' setting. Because I'm a photographer and graphic designer I need the resolution on it's highest setting.
Either way, here's what I did to get the Eve interface visible again.
1. Selected 'Best (Retina)' setting: Apple > System Preferences > Displays; 2. Launched Eve; 3. Went back into System Preferences and selected the 'More Space' setting; 4. In Eve, called up the Display & Graphic settings panel 'esc' key 5. Selected a window size of 1440 X 900
Works fine now. I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. |

Hey guys also directed here by a GM...
I'm on a 15in 2011 Macbook Pro. I usually run the game on the highest settings just fine and have never encountered a problem like this before. I tried the fix you all did and nothing worked, still having the black screen issue after hitting play on the launcher. I went' to system prefs and checked my display settings (it was already on best display) then had the same issue on launch.
Anyone else still having issues? |

I'm also on a 13" rMBP. Until last night, had postponed upgrading from 10.8.x to 10.9.x because of other issues. Since the upgrade, experienced the familiar problem where the client starts without a visible window. Observations:
1. Selecting the 'best for retina' resolution in System Preferences does indeed allow one to launch the client successfully. 2. And then, in the Eve client, one can indeed set the resolution to something high and select the corresponding resolution in System Preferences.
but...
3. In the Eve client, I attempted to use 1680x1050, which is the System Preferences resolution at which I usually run. This change, although successful in that session, did not persist. Quitting out of Eve and re-launching brought back the problem. 4. What finally made the 'fix' stick, was choosing 1650x1050 in game, while the OS System Preferences remained at 1680x1050. Perhaps the client code takes a different (virtuous) path when the in-game and OS resolution settings don't match.
As far as the Mavericks heat issue, one of the factors appears to be Spotlight's overzealous indexing and thumbnail generation. That process seems to choke on some files and seemingly retries indefinitely while pinning the CPU. That Spotlight behavior can be throttled or turned off via System Preferences, and appears to have done the trick for me.
