You have to adjust the pick to the right location. Putting pressure on it in the wrong position 'damages' it and it eventually breaks. Easier locks damage picks more slowly, and their location is less specific. The lowest tier lock is like a 40 degree arc that's correct. Masters are fairly exact.
Anything can be picked by someone with 0 lockpick skill, if you have enough lock picks to experiment or enough patience to reload your save from before you broke your lock picks. |

Maybe this is where that forum post about lower player counts came from.
Loving Skyrim so far, myself. Still not as weird and wonderful as Morrowind, but then Bethesda stated somewhere that it's supposed to be somewhere between TES III and IV on that scale, which I think they accomplished.
I'm actually glad the graphics are a bit dated. Morrowind and Oblivion both ran terribly on my comps at the time. It's nice to actually be able to near-max the settings with my two year old hardware.
The interface for the PC version is awful, though. And a bit buggy. Clearly it's console oriented. |

The one thing that pulls me in and impresses me more than anything is the fact they finally got some real good voice acting down and it's fluid and full of charm. Mind you there is still plenty of rabble that could stand to not be repeated quite so much but it is wonderful. Skyrim feels more alive than any TES game to date and im enjoying it. The advantage of a bad memory is that one can enjoy the same good things for the first time several times.

Are you American by any chance? Cos to me they all sound like Americans failing to be anything from German to Swedish. Only they end up sounding Oirish. The hispanic Nordic guard is hillarious too btw.
Terrible, cringe worthy,.awful acting ..
The combat is rubbish, the biggest turn off for me. The plots are as has been pointed out generic fantasy shyte with only 'good guy' routes. The main quest is ridiculous and uninteresting - typically Bethesda. The graphic style tries to be nordic but looks more like WoW cliche to me.
So far I am still playing it after a few days, but rapidly losing interest. Bethesda should just stop making TES and FO games and farm it all out to Obsidian. |

You're either trolling or heavily medicated. The combat is great. Active blocking, interrupts and staggers, headshots, timing, range differences, movement based power attack types, plus special moves based on moving/standing/sprinting... wtf more do you want?
I call it fantastic, but even if it's not to your liking I can't see calling it rubbish by any means. |

The voice acting is campy but it's really grown on me. Even though the world looks to be about the same size as Oblivion it feels far more massive just because of how they've handcrafted it. It must have taken me two hours to ride from Whiterun to Riften between getting lost on paths, fighting things, stopping for the night and mining some ore.
The best moment by far was running back to Whiterun after that one Companions quest (you know the one if you've done it). I see a poor jester in the road, and stop to help him. While I'm talking with him I see a dragon come in from the top of the screen, the music starts playing, I tab out of the conversation, draw my weapon as the dragon comes about to land and think "**** YEAH THIS IS THE BEST GAME EVER!"
Skyrim is by far the best RPG I've ever played because it makes me actually want to play a role and immerse myself in the world rather than Min/Max my character for a certain build and go the optimal route at all times. The combat goes a long way towards helping that. In Oblivion I always rolled a stealth class because I couldn't stand the combat, and going stealth I could snipe pretty much everything bypassing combat entirely. I absolutely hated the magic system as well. But Skyrim seems to do everything right. Great combat, a nice magic system, and from the limited sneaking I've done on my Nord warrior, enemies that actually hear you and investigate if you aren't dead silent. |

The Mage College quest line is really good (so far.) I'm reserving the word "epic" until I actually finish it.
Also, the damn game cost me 6.5 hours of training time. Note to self: turn on Evemon's "Run Evemon at startup" option.

Just a couple of hints/tricks for people who want to level up their magic skills
-A good way to level up destruction is to get a spell that conjures up an ally to fight with you, like Conjure Flame Atronach, then use your destruction spells to kill it. Rinse and repeat. This might work with one-handed and two-handed weapons also, but I have not tested that.
- For Illusion, get the spell Muffle, and just cast it over and over. It lets you move more quietly.
-For Alteration, get the spell Transmute, then go to all the blacksmith shops and traders in skyrim and buy all the iron ore you can. Transmute will turn the iron ore to silver ore, and can turn the silver ore to gold ore. Then you can smelt the gold ore to gold ingots and resell. Gives you money and helps level you up at the same time :)
Anyone else have any tricks/hints they'd like to share? |

If you're working on smithing, you can either do nothing but leather bracers for free training (turn pelts from animals into leather, turn some of the leather into leather strips, and use those to make bracers) or just buy iron and make iron daggers. I got all the way to 100 smithing using a combination of the two. PVP is a question with no single right answer, but a lot of wrong ones. |

but I must ask, "huge" as in huge or "huge" as in "HOLY MOLLY DID YOU JUST PUT AN ENTIRE COUNTRY IN THERE??" honestly I don't think any gamer has a real idea of how big a country is. even all of world of war craft is apparently if in real life the size of rhode island. which is a 2 day walk across. which is pretty big for an mmo. So we'll see if a game can someday really get that big of a world into it. well other than with cheap gimmicks, like arcanium.
Some years ago there was a game called "Wurm" that claimed to be really big but have not checked this out myself.

I ve been playing it almost constantly , very immersive never played any of the elder scrolls before and it is a grand game world been trying several characterstype and i really like the system simple but beautiful and i think balanced only the UI and key control is a bit of a let down , the game was obvious intended for a console first , pc later Anyway i got abput 4 different characters running around all about lvl 10 to 14 and i am amased at the quantity of things to do and number of sites you find around
there are indeed some bugs in there , running around with a arrow in your butt for hours is one, but apparantly they will release a patch this month
All i can say tthis game is verry addictive

Why would you want to do that? If shes dead her corpse comes to your wedding and ruins it. Most hilarious bug so far. |

That's the corpse of an elf. You can see Lydia walking around quite alive.
Funny video, but it's been edited, to probably not show him killing that guy at the wedding, causing everyone to act that way. |

Its a genuine bug, it works with any dead companion. Their corpses don't de spawn so when they "guests" come to the wedding there is a chance it will bring a dead one. The linked article is pretty funny though, still doesn't stop it from being a great game all the quirks are part of what makes an Elder Scrolls game great. |

Check these for Skyrim:
FXAA Post Process Injector
Enhanced Blood
Enhanced Night Sky (love this one at night, have a similar one for FO3)
And well, tons more, remember the community is always churning out more add ons (PC only, so sorry consolerros) , and the nexus is the Main culprit I still sometimes play FO3/Oblivion even this close to 2012 (until Skyrim of course) |

The glowing ore mod is also somewhat helpful in locating mineable ore nodes. It makes the veins in the ore glow slightly so it's easily identifiable at night or in dark places.
Now I just need a mod that makes dragonplate not ugly. |

Love it. Yes it's clearly optimised for consoles however mods are coming out all the time to improve that. I have new water textures and blood textures. Improved detailing on the faces and a mod that decompresses them properly to smooth blocky chins and noses. It has also been mentioned but the night sky mod is winsauce.
The best mod was the one that allows the game to use more than 2 gigs of RAM. Before the mod the game would run out of memory and close without warning fairly frequently. Now with the mod it's only happened once.

Large Collidable Object wrote:It's pretty good. The main story doesn't seem to be that great and it looks like you're more or less forced to play the good hero stereotype when doing it. I guess it will be a far shot from Morrowinds, but there's some hope it will be better than oblivions. Anyway - I play TES games for the faction quests and with various characters to only cover a few of those at at time. Not going to touch the main story any further until I did all the faction quests.
Graphics look dated even on ultra settings (which perform really good though) and are no big improvement over oblivion, but I guess that's because of consoles.
My only real gripe would be the terrible console interface.

This really, and one of the main reasons I've held off on a purchase is all the 'interesting' extras I like about Collector versions (i.e. soundtrack, video) are separate purchases.
True story btw - saw the Collector box (was for Xbox release) and asked if there was an Xbox packaged in it. Guy said no, its just the dragon figurine...
Sorry, if you're going to package a figurine, please do it to tabletop game scale. Even then the dragon would be fairly large, but not so big that I thought it was a console package. I may have come here from Myst Online, but that does not make me any less bloodthirsty than the average Eve player.
Just more subtle.
