I just got this idea when looting the intercept smuggler mission and was wondering if this would acutally work. Anyways the idea of this baiting is taht you put some illegal goods like slaves/crash/drugs or whatever into a non passworded can along with all ur minerals and if the theif takes your stuff (along with the "tainted" can) would concord/police be able to see through the can and gank them ?

they can pick and choose what stacks they want. but that still doesnt help them if they dont know the legal remifications of, say, crossing into min space with slaves :P ----------------------- ghuis8nf83fn45viunv8jgijfc4eshuvvgs |

well i mean u have a secure can i guess locked, with illegal stuff in them and u name the can Mining Crystals or something and then they take the whole thing. would concord be able to see right through it and gank them ? this is only just a theoretical question i came up with while i was looting Intercept the Smugglers mission

I think the thief only gets a fine if they are caught by the custom agents.
------------- Rules for ship combat.
1) Bring a ship. 2) Bring all your friends in ships. 3) Bring ammo. Bring the right ammo. Bring lots of it. |

Better idea is to have a few cloaked ships hover around an asteroid field and wait for the ore thieves to strike. Hell, you can put a probe out in .4 fields as bait too.

The idea per se ain't so bad: Mine into a passworded can also containing some contraband. Note that some contraband won't go in cans (like slaves).
Only, if thieves can ferry it to a station in the same system they won't even meet customs. Customs is only at gates.
And, if a thief would have trouble taking the contraband *from* your can, wouldn't you have the exact same trouble putting it there in the first place? The only edge you'll have is knowing in advance.
I totally endorse the cloaked (or nearby) combat ship idea however.
Modern ore thieves do sometimes have their own combat support, so be prepared for miniature fleet battles But you only want to shoot up their hauler anyway.

Edited by: Swethren on 19/04/2006 12:27:59 If you are mining in empire. Fit a scram on your barge with some light/med drones. Wait for hauler to come steal from your can. Scram him, kill him. Laugh at him.
*EDIT* doing a scan check at 360 degrees at max range and make sure there are no other ships around is a good start too.

Which doesn't work on cloaked ships he may have brought near. Or docked friends in combat ships. Or in neighbor systems. Or sitting aligned at full speed beyond the 14AU system scanner range.
And you may wish to relocate to a different mining system once you've killed him, since he now has kill rights on you and may well come back in a combat cruiser 2 weeks later.
Of course he could locate you with an agent.
It's not anything a really peaceful miner would naturally do over a can of White Glaze, but tell you what, I may just try it anyway. It's just not as easy as you make it look, and you have noticed that yourself seeing that Edit.

He won't have kill rights. You don't get kill rights if you're flashing red. You get kill rights from a unlawful ship destruction and even further for a podding

Well I have done this to corp members who looted my rat cans (them just having fun all good). I would collect the NPC cans from a spawn and then place them in a jettisoned container (named loot) for hauler pick up. Well some the funny guys in corp found it entertaining to grab the loot right before my hauler would come. I'd get a mad and that would only encourage them. So I decided to copy about 20k of BMs and place them in a standard small container. Went out ratting and surprise the funny guys are at it again. So I bait them a bit with the picking up of loot and dropping it in a can call loot. Then I start freaking on them pulling a total spaz (have to make them really want the bait) so they are grabbing loot cans as fast as I collect and name them. Thats when I jettison the standard container named loot. They come racing to grab the can open it and HAHA LAG MINE YOU SUCKER!!! Then to top it off rat respawn and I leave the belt. Hehe needless to say nobody in the corp goes for my cans anymore.

You mean 20K of BMs in a can will lag up a player if they open it? If that's true then you're brialliant.

Yea, its causing lag on purpose, and as such, is against the rules. I hope I catch you doing it or a GM does, just to laugh EVEBay

Edited by: Bristoll on 19/04/2006 23:18:10 Edited by: Bristoll on 19/04/2006 23:15:42 lol, lag mines... Excellent...
And as for a getting banned for it? LOL, I'd have to side with the "Not so much" response. You're allowed to copy BM's in a station, you're allowed to copy BM's in any other way you see fit, so what's the difference if your intent is to lag someone opening a can? What if you just wanted to leave them there for your mining buddies? Seems like using in-game features to me...
If you're like the above poster, you're prolly just mad that it works and that prevents you from knicking their ore. :p Don't mind me... I'm just a pigment of your imagination. |
