The best bit of advice in this thread was to join a corp. You don't need experience, skill points or lots of time to join a good corp. Just a good attitude. The worst advice in the thread was to stay out of low sec. The best way to learn how to keep from being caught by the hunters is to spend some time as one. Move to low sec. Join a corp out there. Then its friendly space...mostly.

Fair enough, though I did say until he knows what he is getting in to, not permanently :)

Missioning in highsec is considerably safer, in lowsec you're automatically a target. The safety set to green will prevent 99% of all accidental mishaps in highsec, it won't let you do anything that will gain a shoot at me status except engage in a duel and shoot at a legitimate target like a suspect or criminal..
And you can even turn on auto reject on duel invites...Which makes it 100% manageable to what timers you do and don't gain.

Sometimes people don't realize how they appear, and are then confused at the negative reaction. Especially in NC Q&A, where newbies are not aware of what pushes bittervets' buttons, I try to be more lenient. hijacking for a moment, will dscan always show probes before you get warped into by someone? like, can they scan the misison gate in advance before you arrive?
also what about missions that require a key? are they safe? |

To the OP, I'll throw in my experience from the other side.
As to why people do what they do ingame, there is absolutely no use in arguing about it. It's a videogme, what people do ingame does not reflect their behaviour or ethics out of the game.
Now on the invading of missions, you were giving a lot of detailed information already how it is possible.
How shoud you handle being invaded?
Insulting or talking smack is no use. Either engage the ninja, or try to annoy him back. Shooting the wrecks before they can be looted is always a good ninja-killer. Stop missioning and leave the plex. Try to dump the aggro on the pirate (less effective).

Depends on when you hit the scan button, but you should put the probes on your overview. Much easier, If you suddenly see a list of probes pop up, chances are good you are about to be invaded. Simply leave the plex / gate for a couple of minutes. Very annoying as a ninja to suddenly loose the signature you're probng down.
Missions and keys, no idea.

You cannot probe an acceleration gate, only the ship in the mission. If I probe you down and you are 3 rooms deep in the mission, I will only be able to warp to the first gate, so you will see my ship on close range dscan before I arrive. If an acceleration gate requires a key to use, nobody can follow you through without that key.
Dscan will always show probes (assuming that you have them on your overview and they are within the dscan range you have selected). However, people who are really good at probing ships down in hostile space can triangulate your position with dscan, then drop probes right on you, scan and get rid of them, so that they only appear on dscan for 5 seconds or so. If you are in space in low or null, it is best to get used to spamming that dscan button every few seconds when there are other people in local (same in wormholes anytime you aren't behind POS shields). everevolutionaryfront.blogspot.com |

Hrm, I was unaware of this. Thanks for the input. Is there any way to make yourself less detectable in that case? there is a new deployable structure that 'cloaks' you from d-scan. But they can just probe this structure out. Your only two options in LS doing missions is to attach a cloak to your ship and cloak up if someone comes into local, or use the directional scan and watch for probes. if you see probes warp out and come back to your mission a little later when its clear.
yes there are ships and fittings that can make you less probable. At one point, you could craft a ship to be unprobable, but as i recall ccp changed this. Nonetheless, it is still possible to make a ship very difficult to probe. Ofc these ships and fittings are likely not available to you as a new player. Also these are specialized fits that sacrifice a lot of utility to become difficult to probe, so its not something that most typical new players are going to want to do in any event. Just keep hitting your dscan periodically and if you see probes while running missions in low/null - gtfo or cloak. |

If you like the risks of missioning in low sec, next time you die, speak to your killer. Most will be happy to advise you on fits and where you went wrong. If you're in one area regularly, get to know the locals.
TBO whether you are safer in highsec v. low is questionable. It really depends on what you are flying. If you are flying a bling ship, e.g. a marauder with faction fittings, there is a significant possibility of being ganked in highsec. Conversely much, if not most, of low sec is empty and very safe to operate in. Ofc if you pick a lowsec system that is directly adjacent to highsec filled with pirates, you get what you asked for.

Well, the same can be said of high-sec. There are plenty of empty high-sec systems to be found.
I lived in one high-sec system in the past that never had a local count in the double digits unless I logged in the alts.

Unless your ship is really fat (capital-sized or something), the probes always have to get within 14 AU to get a scan on you. That means that yes, you will be able to see them on d-scan.
Helena Heffalump wrote:also what about missions that require a key? are they safe? No. Often the acceleration gate remains unlocked. If it does lock, the mission keys can be found on the market quite cheaply. A locked gate can be an impediment to an unprepared ganker, but it's not insurmountable.
