I watched my father suffering from emphysema for years and years after it forced him to quit. It so reduced his overall constitution that while he recovered a bit, I think it hastened the end of his life by draining his resilience. That was enough to make me never want to try it as a kid.
In the world of work, I was 10 years in a restaurant where the only boundary between smoking and non-smoking was a gap down the middle of the room. One time I was out at a club and had had a few beers, reached up and took a cig out of the hand of a friend and took a big drag without even thinking about it. It was then that I realized that I had passively become accustomed to nicotene from *second hand smoke only.* That was an experience that really concerned me. During those 10 years, the restaurant seating went from 2/3 smoking to 2/3 non-smoking, and since I left they switched to non-smoking entirely in anticipation of a city-wide smoking ban in public places.
I now work in a better job in a smoke-free office. Being away from the smoke is a good thing, but I have to wonder what long-term damage I will regret later in life.
I guess that one drag in a bar counts me amongst the "tried it once" category, but in reality, I basically smoked everyone else's cigarettes for 10 years.

do you live in a city with a pop over say 250k-500k ??
if you do your getting worse damage from the exhusts from cars and the poor air quality in inner cities than from 2nd hand smoke.
Im not pro smoke but i aint anti it either. Love that south park with the tobacco industry and Rob Reiner. So awesome. --------------------------------------------------------

Edited by: Gariuys on 21/04/2006 14:31:02 Started smoking at the age of 10, never stopped, but the amount does fluctuate, I'm now at a stable 20 cigs a day, half that when I'm with my girlfriend ( she's a non smoker, hates smoking and especially hates kissing a walking astray (SP?) ) More when I spend a good day behind the comp or when out ( or in lol ) drinking.
Tried stopping a couple of times. But I go so cranky it's sick. People that are against me smoking (except for my girl, she would love it and gladly accepts the crankiness ) want me to start again. On top of that I'm seriously addicted and really don't want to stop cause I like it too much. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

I smoke, it's big, it's hard and it impresses small children.

smoked for 15 years. Gave it up 4 years ago.
My advice is : Don't start.
If you smoke, switch to cigar or pipe, its easier to quit.

After a few beers it almost impossible to keep away from the smokes.
Sonny Barger, the founer of Hells Angels and a genuine badass was asked once if there was something he regretted in life. He answered that he regret smoking and if he knew what cigrattes does to your body he would never had touched them. Quite funny that a guy like him that have done all kinds of things thinks of smoking first.

I'm with you there.
I smoke and what makes me less determined to quit is when people go on about health problems. My mother died of cancer at 68 and never smoked in her life. My grandmother died of natural causes at 92 and smoked 40 a day most of her life. My conclusion, smoking does not directly cause cancer although it doesn't help. As for the smoking ban, cafe's and such are already fitting out private rooms in the back for smokers because they will lose too much money otherwise. Most people only go for a coffee just to sit and have a cigarette as well.
Don't have a go at the kids if they start to smoke. Nothing will make them more determined to carry on behind your back than you beating on that they shouldn't. Reverse psycology {sp} works better.
In the end, I will quit when I can no longer pick up a packet or I get get tired of smoking. No amount of preaching from people or books is going to make me do it before.

I'm eighteen. Never smoked a cigarette. I took a smoke once, for the express purpose of blowing into a friend's face.
Tobacco's only good for one thing, and that's mixing it with certain more fun, smokeable substances.
You only get the nicotine kick the first couple of times, after that it's just a addiction, and a expensive one at that.
Respect the Domi. Or else.
