I know Monarch Computers does extremely cheap build-to-order (50 dollar assembly fee) for all sorts of computers--but they're based in America.
There must be a similar company in Britain.
I'd get an A64 dual core, 7800GT, and 2GB of RAM

I'd highly advise NOT going to mesh.
Their customer support is horrendous, and the build quality of their systems is appauling.
Check some of the review sites online.
I myself once had a mesh computer, a few years back and can vouch for this.
I Wouldn't touch the bastards with a 20ft barge pole.

Don't touch Packard Bell either, i've also owned one of those, and they're packed with stupid Packard Bell branded OEM software and genreally are thrown together with hopes and dreams, they're also shocking for support and their systems IMO are a bastard to upgrade hardware in.
I've heard both good and bad things about Dell so they're pretty neutral for me, a mate of mine had a hard disk failure at like 7pm and by 10am the next morning they had a service technician at his house (it was under warranty) to replace the hard disk and attempt to recover ant data from it. In the same token, i've heard bad things about them too such as bad support (contrary to what i've seen) and a lot of Crappy OEM software that gets thrown on the syystem when it comes from the factoreh.
The best "off the shelf" computer I've came across, and owned was an Advent system I bought a couple of years ago. It was easy enough to get into, came with decent Seagate, Asus and LiteOn parts and was reliable for the full length of time I had it.
The remnants of that system (one of the hard disks, (SATA seagate barracuda) and the two DVD rom and RW+/- drives have been relible enough to be transplanted into my new system now that i've decided it's time to finally upgrade.

My dad bought Dell for his PC, and I know he received a very decent price and good support from them. He has ordered a laptop as well from them.
I think Komplett.com had good sytem prices, and I think overclockers.co.uk had as well.
Personally when I bought my last PC I went for one of the Mini-ITX shuttle from Shuttle.com.
They are very powerful for their size, and even my little sister could build one so your mate has no excuse! |

I'd advise AMD Athlon 64 K000+ (3200+ or higher) on 939. ASUS A8N mainboard or maybe some DFI. I heard something about the DFI Lanparty boards being rather good. (last time I had a DFI on my hands was back in k6 II days and was very good) At least 2Gb of Ram plus on 939 boards they can run in dual Monitor is very important if he is getting that also. so something like 19 inch with nice res and refresh rate is advisable. or better.
And with the rest of the cash he can buy some nice graphics card. Buying the above would leave quite enough cash for the graphics card. I go for nVidia and name on name. something like asus MB, asus graphic card, etc.

The best review comparison site ive found on the net
Ask around at local PC stores if they would mind building the PC if you supplied them the parts obviously for a fee. - This is how i built my first PC and actually began working within the store i watched him build it.
Do not go Intel!!!

Don't go Dell--their higher end systems are very overpriced and they don't sell Athlons.

As a reseller as well as occasionally a system builder, I can strongly recommend HP but only their business range. We've sold and installed more HP units than I can count (Servers, Laptops & Desktops) and very rarely have a problem. The support has always been fantastic as well.
The HP Pavillion range etc (the home stuff) makes me feel ill.
Dell are... so-so. I wouldn't buy from them out of choice, especially their big systems (as above). ______________________

The problem with recommending a custom PC to someone who is a layman, is that you WILL be the first one they call at 7pm during dinner when they have any type of problem.
I no longer build PC's for friends or family, and never will, it's just too much of a hassle for what they need.
Someone mentioned Packard Bell, do they seriously still make desktops?
/me checks google
OMG, well, I can tell you, I have no idea what kind of stuff they put out nowadays, but anything from 5-10 years ago was pure garbage, filled with proprietary components that could not be replaced, forcing you to buy a whole new system if something as small as a PSU fuse blew.
The only reason I would recommend Dell, is that they offer decent prices on a complete system. Their support is not really any different than most major manufacturers. Like most it helps to speak Hindi. Their OEM components are generally far superior to other builders, because, well, that's their business model.
As far as a lot of the smaller companies go, they are usually a little more pricey for what you get, though generally will offer better support and service. Then again, who knows if they will even still be around in a couple few years.

If he's looking at Alienware, obviously he's wanting a gaming comp with some cohones on it, and a little bling-bling to go along with it.
The Assassin from Vicious PC has earned a Maximum PC "Kick Ass", and recieved a silver editor's choice award from Hard|OCP (with the one weakness being speed of tech support response). This is a "boutique" PC shop offering factory installed watercooling in a customized CoolerMaster case, and a great "bang for the buck".
The ABS M6 Sniper can be configured with or without watercooling, and also offer an excellent price/performace ratio. They don't have quite the head-turning appeal of Vicious or Alienware, however.
Velocity Micro's Gamer's Edge 1500 isn't much of a looker, but the stats on this thing are otherworldly: Athlon64 4000+, 500W power supply, 2GB RAM, Asus A8N-SLI mobo, dual 7900GT graphics cards (yes, that's two of the big boys), dual layer DVD burner AND a CD burner... and weighs in at $2005 when configured like that. They've got a good rep on the build quality and tech support front, too. If I had to pick only one place to send a friend to get a comp, this would be it.
Falcon Northwest has all the sex appeal the Velocity Micro boxes lack. This is the original "gaming" PC shop. They've been making the most drool-worthy computers on the planet for about 14 years. Much like buying a Ferrari, however, you'll be paying a hefty premium to have one of their machines grace your home. If nothing else, just go there to marvel at their gallery of custom hand-painted Mach V Exotixs cases. Just a couple of pictures to whet your appetite. Not affordable by any stretch of the imagination, but it's nice to dream. Their Talon and Fragbox lines are much more affordable than the almighty Mach V, but you're still paying a bit of a premium for the name.

Vista is not yet on public release. It's currently on Beta2 (I'm running the December CTP on a machine next to me). It comes with DirectX 10 (I'm running that too), but to get the full benefit you will need a new graphics card at some point once Vista is released. Basically, don't worry about it for now. ______________________

i'd actually hold off buying a new pc for a little bit, apparently we're a year away from a major architechture revamp.
That said, we've been a year away from a major architechture revamp for the last 10 years, so i could be talking utter bollox.

Pretty much any half decent PC you buy now will run Vista when it comes out. Hell, I'm running it on an Athlon XP 1900+. It's going to mostly come down to graphics card (which you can always replace).
It's basically a balance between spending the money now and getting the use out of the machine, or waiting for up to a year and getting Vista first time round. So do you want the computer sooner rather than later? ______________________

Well, I bought a Medion desktop pc a while back and it's been very stable and does just fine, I also have a fujitsu siemens laptop which is very nice, no major problems with either of them.
In the UK you can pick up specials from Medion now and then in ALDI supermarkets, very cheap and do the job well.
I'm sure you can get a damn good system if you are prepared to shop around and pay the money, but if you're on a budget you wouldn't go too far wrong with a Medion in my experience.
Also the mother-in-law just bought a cheapie cheap DELL and I must say I am impressed with it for the price she paid.
Best of luck in chosing your system.
