Hi, I think this is roughly the right place to post this, so sorry if it aint.
My problem is this: What should I be using for pirating / bounty hunting, weapon-wise? I've got my NOS and WCS, and all that type of thing sorted. I need advise on which GUNS to use, not including missiles, because they're sorted too. Amarr specialise in lasers, sure, but I never seem to do much damage with them, yet I hear people talking about the wonders of railguns and blasters. However, in numerous pirating videos I've seen, and experts I've spoken to, lasers always seem perfectly fine. What should I do to raise my damage, and the amount of times I hit? I can hit a lot when I'm at optimal range, but anything outside that is totally impossible to hit!
Thanks in advance.

well boosting your skills up always help, also putting WCS on a frigate is kind of redundant, as they are so cheap you'de be better off puting dmg mods or a better tank in the lows and performing better in combat. You'll lose some frigs, but on the other hand you'll be able to kill some stuff. With stabs on a frig you'll rarely lose your frig but you'll rarely kill stuff most likely.

I frig-pirate in this setup for my Punisher, works fairly well:
3x Medium Pulse Laser I 1x Small Nosferatu I 1x 1MN MWD I 1x Warp Disruptor I 1x Small Armor Repairer I 1x Co-Processor I 1x Power Diagnostic System I 1x Reactor Control Unit I
Some people would advise dropping the med pulse lasers and making them dual light pulses, and then putting heat sinks in the lows, and that's fine. For you, replace the med pulses with dual light ones, and it should work decently enough.

Hmm intersting. I had figured pirating was reserved for uber ships or players with lots of tech 2. This is a low cost easy to get ship. Question:hat would you try to take with this? Maybe pirating is not only a seasoned players game after all.
I cant imagine this ship doing well against a cruiser equiped with small rail guns or missles and it would seem to not have enough punch to take down highly armored/sheilded miners very quick.. Not to mention any drones they may have. What would this be good against? Maybe im missing the trick to this.. i know when im out in <.5 in my frig and I see a Cruiser pop in I have always asumed i was outgunnd and turned tail and fled.

Stop gimping your setup on a cheap frigate by using warp core stabs. Those things take up a huge chunk of your cpu, no wonder you cant kill stuff.
(Also, people you see in videos killing everythig they see have 30mill + skill points - they also edit out the bits where they die or perform poorly)

I'm assuming you're still young (SP wise) so I'd recommend using gatlings. The damage potential is nearly on par with dual lights, and they give you some extra flexibility in fitting your mids and lows.
3x Gatling / NOS
AB / Warp jammer-disruptor
Sm. Rep / 200mm plate / Heat sink / CPR
That should be pretty easy to fit with engineering 3 or so.

You do mean scrambler, not WCS, right?

Edited by: Krist Valentine on 21/04/2006 08:21:57 I got scrambler and WCS :D I sometimes switch between AB, scrambler, armor repairer, and webber.
By the way, what is a ''better tank'' and what are the damage mods'' you talk of, Murukan?
Sakura, I also use Medium Pulse Laser I - why would it be better for me to go for dual light pulse I?
Thanks for the link to the pirate loadout, btw. Looks helpful.

The MWD lights you up like a christmastree. It also gimps your ship a bit. Better off ditching the lowslot stuff and taking advantage of the fact that the punisher is a tough little bastard for a t1 frig when it's tanked. An AB may well mean you take less damage, although you will be a little on the slow side.
somebody (malka?) posted a decent punisher setup over on the ships forum. they were running 3 cprs and a repper in the lows should mean you can just leave it running, which is actually quite a useful tank. Throw a t2 repper on there and you're laughing. It's also much easier on your grid reqs, so you can actually use guns too.
try to use medium pulses if you can, since the damage of dual lights is ****y. It all depends on your skills and stuff. You should also always carry 2 sets of crystals for modifying your optimal. Microwave for 10k+ and MF or gamma for < 10k (gamma use less cap, so if you're having issues in that dept. its worth sacrificing 1 thermal dmg).

on closer inspection, somebody already linked malka's punisher setup on eve-pirate.
I really should start reading these threads at some point.

Edited by: Krist Valentine on 21/04/2006 12:12:13 Yeah, that setup is what I'm now running (with some changes). I never go anywhere without my afterburner, which is generally the Cold-Gas I Arkjet Thrusters

According to the Amarr and Ammatar Navies, mining lasers work fine (at least that's what they drop in their loot).

Quote: I had figured pirating was reserved for uber ships or players with lots of tech 2.
Piracy lies in the ability to understand the mechanics of EVE, the tactics of your ship, and the patience to test your own ideas. Keep this simple formula in mind:
25% of EVE is your ship and modules 25% of EVE is your character skills 50% of EVE is your knowledge of the game and your tactics as a pilot
As you get more PvP experience in you will come to see that 50% as being one of the most vital yet ignored aspects of EVE. It is through exploiting that 50% out of others that a pirate can leave a region in flames. --------------

I hear you Malka, though, do you not agree that in-game experience makes your SP go higher, and as your SP goes higher, you are also able to find easier ways to earn money, which buys you better versions of equipment (as in more named+T2-stuff).
Agreed, if someone who knows the game-mechanics starts a new character, that character (without SP, etc.) will be a lot better off, than if Mr. Green, who just started playing EVE.
And, of course. One factor you forgot is: friends.
The social aspect of EVE, is one that a lot of people seem to miss. I prefer to pirate with a friend, or two.

A 1-4 day old character can easily get 10-20+ kills a day with a weak frigate or cruiser and T1 equipment. What most 1-4 day old characters lack is the experience of a veteran.

Propulsion jamming takes about 8 hours. You can start with frigate 4, and so another hour for missile op and rockets.

this is how we get high-sec ganking kessies
my only thought on why to switch out meds for dual lights was for grid fitting reqs - by all means, if you have the grid, fit the big boys for an easier fight.
