I'm sure most folks are familiar with the TED talks (http://www.ted.com) that are commonly seen around the internet: concise, 20-minute presentations on a given topic delivered by people who are experts in a given field. I thought it might be cool if there was a track at Fanfest where players could deliver similar short-form presentations on areas that they're proficient in.
It could cover topics like cap ship construction, research and invention, wormhole mechanics, logistics (both moving stuff and the finer points of fixing spaceships in combat). How about tips like setting up corp services like forums or voice comms? Dealing with griefers and wardeccers, weeding out spies, setting up your overview, streaming, rearranging your UI or developing simple third party apps? Ship fitting, dropsuit fitting, game lore... the list goes on.
The idea came to me when thinking about how much advice I give people about organising player meetups and noticing so many threads in OOG Events & Gatherings that would probably be a lot more successful if the posts were better crafted or if people put some effort in to promoting them beyond the Eve-O forums.
Based on my experience at Fanfest last year, you essentially have Tranquility (the main theatre for the big presentations), Singularity (the smaller theatre for second tier stuff) and then the roundtables in the side rooms. What if there were another track at Fanfest this year - another small room with space for 20 to 30 people - where a player who thinks they have something of interest to talk about could get on their feet for 20 minutes, give a presentation they brought along on a USB, do some Q&A and have a discussion with whoever turns up?
If CCP were interested then there could be a call for players coming to Fanfest to submit outlines of their presentations to CCP for review and the ones that looked the most polished and credible would be allocated a slot to give their presentation and have it published in the schedule so interested parties know when to show up.
It would be cool if sessions were recorded and went up on the CCP Games Youtube in a separate "Eve how-tos" channel sometime after fanfest (obviously these would be too low-key to be streamed) and rather than going for the entire weekend it could maybe just be for one day or one half-day of Fanfest so as not to tie up too many resources in case it's not a success its first time out. Reminds me of the "Total risk management" presentation from the vegas presentation. "CCP is changing policy, and has asked that we discontinue the bonus credit program after November 7th. So until then, enjoy a super-bonus of 1B Blink Credit for each 60-day GTC you buy!"

Mark726's awesome presentation on State of the Lore that I saw on the Eve Vegas VODs partially inspired the idea. I was really impressed that a player was up there on stage talking about Eve in such a confident and informed manner, and was so well versed that he took questions afterwards as though he was a dev.
Surely there are a lot of Eve players out there with such knowledge and passion for the game on a range of topics. If they're half as informative as Mark they'd still be well worth listening to!

This is an awesome idea. Who doesn't like TED Talks? Having EVE Talks at Fanfest next year would be a really cool way for players to engage the community, which is always a good thing. The only problem would be vetting the applicants, as I would not envy the person who has to filter through all the troll talks to get to the few good ones.
