from "across the pond!" I visited England once, lovely country, great people, and discovered I have a genuine fondness for the Monarchy. She's had a tough time with her family and the press, but I think of Elizabeth as a noble gracious lady, perhaps the last of the line. Future of the Crown seems a bit shakey, considering who might come after her.
But for today, Happy Birthday!

I wish the same to her. She's an amazing person - especially in these times of media frenzies and sleeze - nothing has come close enough to even risk sticking.
I agree - the Prince of Wales is a decidedly wobbly successor, but there's hope yet in young William. ______________________

Not likely, Charles may abdicate early, leaving it open for a younger dynamic King.

I was going to make a long winded post about how much I despise our Royal family, detailing how they do NAFF ALL for any of us and sponge of our taxes...
...but frankly, I can't be arsed.
So, IMO they suck.
Nuff said.

Nope. We sponge off them. The amount they get from the Civil List isn't even a thousandth of the income from the lands they gave to the government in exchange. ________________________________________________

Harry should be the next king.
He'd last about 20 seconds, but it would be funny.

TBH, having the frigging chuckle brothers as figureheads for the country would stand us in a better light that having some demented old bint with a dodgy accent representing us.
Look at the Royal family :
Philip - A Notorious Racist Elizabeth - Doesn't know her arse from her elbow Charles - Halfwit who went to Eton Harry - Drunken racist idiot (lovely fancy dress mate) William - The only one with half a brain
These are the people who you think are good to represent us?
lol... don't run for MP, please.

Talk sense, it's the British public we are talking about here. It would end up some sort of Pop Idol TV programme where Jordan ends up queen of the country. |

he is more of a figurehead. The Country is run by the Government, but she has final say over things, although she can't really refuse anything that is put before her. |

Last time I checked the country was run by Tesco, Lloyds Bank, Proctor & Gamble and Prudential.

One of the powers the queen still has is the power to abolish ower goverment and take direct controll all she has to do is command it
Doubt it will ever happen but she can do it.

In theory. In practice, that power is only useful should a Government try to subvert our democracy - say by passing an Act that abolishes general elections and leaves themselves in power permanently. The Queen (or King) could refuse to sign it, and dissolve Parliament forcing an immediate general election, against the Government's wishes.
For anything short of that, the monarch refusing to sign a bill passed by Parliament would lead to an abdication in very short order.
Well they're trying to pass a bill that until recently would have allowed them to do most of the above. ______________________
