The situation right now is a lot better than the situation before cold war. If anyone would want Yulai to be the center of trade again, be prepared for about 2000 people in the system at all times...
Right now, market hubs have dispersed, and that's all for the better, since it means people have dispersed aswell, which was very much needed.
There are still too many empty systems around, so it would be best to eliminate all highway gates. Eventually this would help create even better regionalized markets.

How would it revitalize trade? I could have sword trade was rather limited before the changes seeing as all transactions occured in one system, leaving the rest of the galaxy rather barren.
Since then we've had 3 empire hubs at least grow, sure JITA is the predominant but there is always going to be a major hub. When you take in the factors of player population growth and put that on the numbers yulai used to have, it would probably be 1000 players in Yulai by now.
Now we have a more regionally diversified market, which is the key to a functioning economy. The more total and encompassing a single market becomes for the whole galaxy, the more it reduces the capability of outside trade to occur.
I would like to see each empire have it's own hub, and several smaller common points and trade occur between the empire markets as the north and south for example have their seperate wars and affect their localized empire markets.
Overall I like these changes. For one they've drawn most pirates away from the 0.0 chokepoints too. Yay for gate changes

I dont know why the concept of toll gates has not been thought of or discussed here.
For the "joe average" a 10-12 jump trip is normally ok if they can afk it or have a fast ship or instas but how about a few toll gates that would link regions from certain systems in a very few number of jumps.
Then the gates could charge the user a fee based on the value of the ship and/or cargo (with possible reductions or additions based on the standing of the pilot to the gate owner)
You would have hub systems for trade again but the cost in those places would be higher cos of the added costs of the transport, regoinal (and local) markets would still florish (cos they could under cut the tolled market routes) and it would create any number of possiblities for story lines.
Add to this a kind of payment system (that could be be discounted) like POS charters (or part "voucher" part isk or whatever) and you could have a whole new line of trade right there.

Because that WOULD kill off trade. It's a direct tax on profits. And it'd lead to industrialists not wanting to even go a few jumps to get to get mins, because they'd bleed cash all the way...the market in the outer regions would need to be solid before you *effectively* blocked travel through the center, and they are worse than the days of the highways and unlimited sell orders.
