hi there! i'm being a miner in the eve universe. while training for barges and exhumers, i've found out that they require a certain level of drones.. since i also want to have a destroyer (and maybe something better in the future) capable of hitting enemyes (for missions or stuff like that), should i use the algos instead of the catalyst? they both focus on small hybrid turrets, but maybe i can use the bonuses obtained during the skilling of the barges..
yes i want to stay gallente for these, but if there's a better one to use in this sense i can change.. |

The Algos is more of a drone-centric ship with guns for supplementary firepower. In some ways, it's beefier than the Catalyst and has more room for versatility (by virtue of the drones)... but it requires more skills to get the most out of (drones, guns, and tank vs. guns and tank).
The Catalyst is a pure gunship. Few other destroyers can match its pure annihilative firepower (with high skills of course) but it pays for this by often being forced to commit to an engagement at close range. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

Algos doesn't focus on small hybrid turrets, it focuses on drones.
Now, say you want to become a miner with teeth....go for the Catalyst.
This way you can use the destroyer to take out the competition Personal channel: Crazy Dutch Guy

yep i understand this.. but since mining still requires scout drones and combat drones, it should not be a problem.. or at least this was my understanding, and therefore the question :) |

My opinion, in terms of time invested, I would recommend going by way of the drone unless you are planning on doing PVP with a Catalyst in the near future. Drone skill will be of value even if you opts to step away from destroyers down the road. This message brought to you by Experience(tm). Drone skills are rarely wasted, I'm starting to regret not having trained them fully when my toon had the time to throw around.
Maxing gun skills can take a while and will certainly be something you'd want to do at some point, you can be rather certain that whatever you are flying will be using drones In some capacity, almost all ships ( not all but most) in eve have a drone bay, regardless of turret, tank or race so , yeah, get your drones to t2 sooner rather than later and you will never have to think about them again. That in mind. Go for the algos as it will encouraged you to train them now rather than later when you may well 've commited to some larger ideal. If in doubt...do...excessively. |

I guess the thrasher comes close, but I'd be lying if I claimed that 1800 damage volley's made up for losing out on 700+dps. I too started off down the miner path with the goal of being able to make income in the background while training other skills and working on the side. That being said due to the training in Drones for the mining aspect it lead me to running the Tristan drone boat in the beginning of L1 missions and ultimately trained the Algos.
While I can completely vouch for the Algos in PvP, as far as mission running it is a great investment. Mine is loaded out with 8 Hobs and 4 Salvage Drones which at Drones IV gives you an offense, a replacement for that offense, and then a clean up crew.

Why choose. Use both.
The gunnery skills will also work well for the frigates, which at times are a better choice than a destroyer. The Gallente also have an excellent drone frigate. |

The Catalyst is an extremely specialised ship. It's really terrible except for close range engagements.
But in that niche, it is unmatched. There is a reason that thousands (probably tens of thousands) of Catalysts are used by gankers every day.
The Algos is more versatile and not as fragile as the Catalyst, but does not have the same overwhelming firepower.
If mining is your thing, however, the Catalyst should be a ship you become very familiar with. Whenever you are in an asteroid belt and rivals are touching YOUR ORE, you should reship into a Catalyst and blow your rivals up. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=238931 - an idea for a new form of hybrid PVE/PVP content. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=318489 - Proposal for a new type of tech 2 Destroyer If you want to mine in highsec, read www.minerbumping.com. |
