So once more I was out mining in my trusty Hulk and having my faithful Orca by my side. I keep a basic Rifter in it so I can scout out my belts since its so annoying to warp a Orca or a Hulk around. I don't know much about PvP or anything besides mining and production. So happy as happy can be I am minding my own business. But it seems that the 'vers had other plans for me. I see a Catalys jump in and I know what is coming next. So in order to save my beloved Hulk I quickly invite the pilot into a conversation and as he is locking me I say "So what do you want to not blow me up." Knowing full well that I will not be able to jump out before he have me in sight. I glance at the overview and the Orca is 3.5km away. Well frakk he will see if I try to approach it to switch ships. But as a nice pirate he says "Give me 50m and you will live to mine another day." Well it takes less then a second to decide that my sweet little Hulk is worth more then 50m so I happily transfers the money to the friendly pirate. "Thank you for a good deal" he say before the lock drops and he jumps away. A good deal for me since the modules I got on my Hulk is not worth 50m but the ship is so he made a profit and I saved about 250m. Another good day and a saved ship. I made about 100m that day so with the loss of 50m I still made a profit compared to me losing my ship and having to buy a new one.
All I got to say is thank you Sir Pirate for honoring your word and taking the bribe rather then blowing me up, I wish you the best of luck and hope that you will get many more tasty ISKis along the way.
Will I do anything different today or tomorrow? Not at all I make a good profit in my hulk and I am happy to take the risk of having pirates come in and blow me up or in this case accept a bribe for not doing so.
So as long as Pirates keep their word about bribes and ransoms then I will happily pay them.
So to take another event as well that made me laugh like hell while it was going on. I was in the dreaded lowsec in a Covetor and my Miasmos. I was more then ready to loose both ships but I needed some of that tasty lowsec ore for a ship I was going to build. I knew that I had to watch local and my overview but well when nature calls and you need a smoke then you run like the wind and smoke like a... well I don't really know what but I have seldom smoked so fast in my life. When I get back I look over local and what do you know there is someone there with me. It does not take long for the guy to warp in and I expected him to blow me up right then and there. But he locks me and is quite quickly though my shields. He convos me and I reply with "Carebear bribing negotiation at your service." I quickly get a 'lol' back from him and he asks me what my ship is worth to me. I think it over and say that I will happily give him 75m for it and my Miasmos since I got some Ore I need in it for production. "Well if you need it then its a bit low... make it a 100m and its a deal." he told me. I look over my wallet and sigh I only got 80m after buying a Orca. "Well Sir Pirate I am afraid that I only got 80m right now. But I tell you what I give you the 75m and I will build you a ship. I got many blueprints and if you agree not to blow me up its yours." By now he most likely thought I was trying to pull one over his head so I link my fittings and my modules are worth far less then 75m since I was ready to lose them but a Covetor is still a Covetor and I really need that ore. After a moment I get a reply from him. "Sure jetison all your ore and transfer the money and its a deal." So as a good carebear I do as I am told and I am free to leave. When I get back I sigh and sell off some or my spare ore to buy the materials I need instead while I send a mail to him. "So sir what ship would you like, I will trade it as I promised for what I jetted and my ore." After a bit of talking we agree on a ship, I put it up for production and contract it to him. he promptly contracts my things back and both are quite happy.
So a few days later I get a mail from him saying "So I need some other things can you build it for me?" I think, hey this might be a new client and maybe he won't blow me up the next time I see him. So I happily agree and make then things for him and contract it at a smaller margin then I would if I was selling it on the market, kind as I am I even move it down to him since he can't enter hisec. Happy as a clam he thanks me and says that if he sees me around I won't have to worry. I like nice pirates that you can make deals with.
So to all you wonderful pirates that are in need of ships, I will be happy to trade my services for not being blown up.
Well thats all for now. More in the next episode of A Carebears Diary!!!!
Now its time to do like Zoidberg and woob my way out of here. |

Dear Diary, I just bought my first destroyer, a catalyst, and was anxious to try it out on some belt rats. I fitted it with 5 small beam lasers and a civilian shield booster, and went hunting. I'm not sure if you qualify as a carebear if you're mining in losec and accept the fact that you might pretty much just spontaneously die at any moment. For that, I salute you good sir miner, for you have ascended above the rest of your kin.
That said, I'm not sure of your philosophy of just mining away without much of a consideration on how to avoid the very evitable demise of a pirate catching you with your pants down. Be it ignorance or sloth, there's a number of ways you could avoid this from happening in the first place. But I can't complain too much, seems like you had much more fun than you would've had just mining away without interruption. www.minerbumping.com |

It might seem strange but I find a sort of joy when a pirate locks me and demands a ransom. Not sure why but me not being a PvPer since I enjoy my mining I just like it. Most pirates are also very polite and nice towards you as long as you don't try to screw them over.
There are a lot of things I can do to mine safer and make myself less of a target. But during workdays I mine about 2 hours a day and want to make sure to make the most of it so I take some risks and its very seldom that something bad happens. Hell on my new mining alt that I have been playing for about 2 months I have not been approached by a pirate or been suicided so its not very likely but its a risk that I am aware off.
And if you are not prepared to die at any moment in EvE then you need to consider if you should be playing it or not. Sure I along with most people I assume don't want to be blown up but just accept the fact that this is a mainly PvP driven game and as such you are always a target even when you are hunting.
And in regards to the woman mocking me before. I would not feel as threatened by a new character as a 3 years old one with a standing about as bad as my writing. |

Well you appear to be code compliant already as you are polite to gankers, are at your keyboard and alert to what is going on around you. The 10 mill fee buys a lot more than just avoiding CODE guns. If you help locate botters and afk miners in nice ships and provide warpins then you will most likely get invited to their chat channel. They are a friendly and helpful bunch (Erotica has a fun channel too). Meeting new communities and making friends is always good in eve and if you have catalyst BPO's you will have some ready buyers. Knowing where they are ganking will also aid your manufacturing as you can place new mining ships in the local market (plus fittings ofc) at a decent mark up over Jita so that ganked miners can quickly buy a new ship If some local miners are annoying you then it is usually possible to get an agent come help you gank them which is also fun and likely a new gameplay experience for you. Anyway it will open a ton of doors and the cost is so low. Just my 2 cents.

Purchasing a permit may be too late when an agent has you in his sights ;)
To find out more about the Code, I would highly recommend you read through the site in my signature. In particular the tab titled "The Code". If you have the time and the patience, you'll find a bit of a longer read under the "OTHER RELEVANT THREADS" section in the "Links" tab.

It's not strange, it's what you signed up to Eve for. That sense that, no matter what, the universe is a dangerous place. Knowing you can be violenced even while doing the most mundane activities is what makes those mundane activities fun. Congratulations on recognizing this. I dub thee Not-A-Carebear. Would that make you the queen or king of EvE then? Or just a Lord? Well anyway its quite plain what kind of game EvE is just by reading over the rules and such and going onto the forums. Heck even CCP made a video I believe where they show a new player being taken advantage of and he infiltrate and destroy that alliance. As to show what you can do in EvE so yeah I knew what I was signing up for.
I have met a few really rude pirates as well but most of them are quite nice if you talk to them and honestly a miner is just a piniata waiting to be bashed. But I still see myself as a carebear in the sense that I am a miner, I only do mining and production for now. I have not fired first, heck I have yet to fire anything at another player. I hoard my ore to make iskis and I manufacture to make even more. But I need a base to stand on. I will get into PvP eventually I am here reading and talking to people trying to learn before I get into it. Also its kinda nice to have a production character behind a PvP pilot so I can easily replace all that I will lose.
But another story that might seem stupid once more but I do enjoy to write.
So once more I was pressing my luck in nullsec since well the ore there is tasty if you can get in and out without going boom. I knew that I was intruding on a alliance space but hey a miner got to make some ISKis as well. I was feeling quite proud of myself for ninjamining their tasty ore. Well this is going well I thought as I keep a close eye on my overview and on local. I knew that most likely it was only a matter of time before someone jumps in. I was aligned towards a "safespot" that would most likely let me jump to a gate and out of there. I do love my Covetor and I was in a Miasmos as a hauler. I had even convinced a friend to come with me for protection against pesky rats. So in on overview I see five people suddenly appear. 'Well time to get out of here' I say to my friend and I begin to pull in my drones and get all the ore into the Miasmos. But I was not fast enough they jump right on top of me and I am locked. My friend gets away. Looking over the people I see that they are not in the alliance that owns this space so they must be a recon squad I think to myself.
Friendly chaps as they are they open a convo with me, demanding to know what I am doing here and how much my beloved "Snarf Eggbert" is worth to me. I quickly calculate the price of it all. knowing I got enough ore to make everything I got so it would not be a huge loss but still its annoying. So I tell them that I would be willing to pay 200m to be let go. My ships were into armor as they think I am taking to long or believe that I am a part of the alliance. So after a quick chat its clear that they are here to scout out what kind of defenses the other alliance have. Kind as I am I propose a deal. They let my poor Miasmos go and I will agree to jump before them into the systems in my Covetor. So they will know what they are facing and such and be a bit more safe. They did agree and I manage to get my ore back to station. Since I had agreed to the deal I honor my agreement and begin to scout each system before them, jumping in and reporting local before they come in. It ended up with me being blow to pieces by the alliance that owned the system but I made five new friends and had a good laugh with them on teamspeak.
While this was not a crime per se I was "stealing" ore from an alliance and I was ransomed for my ship. But in the end I lost the Covetor but hey its part of the fun. My Miasmos did survive with the ore and that was the important part for me. |

OP is already involved in PVP. Mining is PVP because it interacts with the market and every trade is real-loss PVP.
But yeah, OP should feel confident to be involved in spaceship-shooting PVP and engage on his terms. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=238931 - an idea for a new form of hybrid PVE/PVP content. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=318489 - Proposal for a new type of tech 2 Destroyer If you want to mine in highsec, read www.minerbumping.com. |

But full fledged bitters... They need to die. It's one thing to play eve while working and can't focus 100% of the time, it's another to not mine and be out at the bars erc. Lol.
As for the OP, love your story. I always enjoy hearing stories of things just working out. Next time, hire and escort! :-) |

Next time, hire and escort! :-) Well an escort is not a bad idea but they take about 50m and I have had escorts run away at the sight of pirates so I had to pay another 50m to the pirates to not be spacejunk. So I am a bit restrictive with that. I don't mind paying people to aid me but its little they can do about a suicide gank for instance. So it just cuts to deep into my profits. |

As for your sidenote, I might do that but for now I am quite content hoarding my ore and building my stuff. Its far to nice for now. Right now I am doing a lot of work for pirates that blew me up once. They needed ships so we did a deal they don't attack me and I build things for them and sell them at a very small profit to them. Sure I don't make a lot of money as if I would sell it on the market but I make some iskis and I am now "free" to mine in some low/nullsec places.

Well once I find some people willing to take me in and teach me I will most certainly do so but as I have no experience myself and I don't really like to roam around alone I prefer to do it with someone so in time maybe. Then again I would be a horrible PvPer since I only look at how ships look and chose from that... not from what they are good at :P But oh well sooner or later... |

Episode 4: The tale of the confused pirate
Right so I promised another story so I will deliver. This time I am running a bit of a small mining op with well... just me and my alts. I am active on all of the accounts and making sure to keep close to my Orca this time. Worth to note that once more I am in lowsec since well I need some of that tasty ore that I am not able to get in my "safe haven" of hisec. So since I am ready to loose my Covetors I chose them instead of the Hulks so if I loose them its a smaller loss and I can make some new ones. The Orca however is something that I do not wish to loose its quite expensive but I run it as cheep as I can with a ok tank so I should be able to get out. As a good Not-a-carebear I have it aligned towards a safespot I set up in my Rifter before. Happy as a clam as I am raking in tasty ore and a swarm of drones around me I think "Well this is going well, all alone in the system no one in local this is great." Well you know Murphy's law... when things can go wrong they will go wrong. It starts with my accidentally double clicking in space and getting my Orca out of alignment. About the same time I see some friendly chaps jump into local. "Well crap" is my first thought. Trying to get my Orca to jump to my safe spot before they scan me down. One Covetor away, two Covetors away and the last Covetor away and Orca almost away when they come down on me. Does not take long for them to lock, web, scramble and do all sorts of nasty things to my beloved DKM Regin. They begin to shoot and since I got quite a nice tank on the Orca it does not go pop right away. I still take care to get my Covetors to safety during this. Then my friend the confused pirate opens a conversation with me. (Confused Pirate will be called Confucius from here on.)
Confucius> "500m or we blow up your Orca." Me> "I do not got 500m and I kinda really need this ore. Can we come to some other arrangement?" Confucius> "No! Rum, booty and ISKis is all we want." Me> "How about this, I got some ships that you might want and I will contract them to you." Confucius> "Wait... you will give me ships?" Me> "Sure, I got 500m in assets but I don't got it in ISKis right now." Confucius> "Well.... what kind of ships do you got?" Me> "One moment...." Me> [Link to the ships I have made and was planing to sell.] Confucius> "So we can chose one ship each?"
This is where I began to think that he was not all to old in EvE and maybe English was not his native language.
Me> "Sure you and your friends chose one ship each and I will contract them to you for free." Confucius Friend> "Sweet I will have a Omen" Confucius> "Wait... so you will give us ships but not ISKis?" Me> "Yes I don't got the money to pay you but I do have ships that I would happily trade for my Orca." Confucius> "Ok... so well... I will take a Omen as well... and well... just give us 6 Omens." Me> "Ok... there you go contracted all 6 of them to you. May I go now?" Confucius> "Sure you can go."
I put the contract for 1 day since I assumed they would accept it right away. But they let me go and I jump away to my Not-a-carebear hole where I am safe. I got away with a almost full Orca and my Covetors. Sure I had to part with 6 Omes but thats not to bad and I did not have to give them all of my ships which I was almost ready to do since what I am building now is kinda important. But then I look at contracts and I see that they have rejected it, so since I am a nice person I contact him and ask him why he have rejected it.
Confucius> "Sorry... I missclicked can you send me it again?" Here I think for a moment, they did let me go and I did give them the contract. Its not my fault that they screwed it up. Me> "Sure but I will put a price on them this time, just above material cost so I make a little profit." Confucius> "Oh ok thats nice, how much each?" Me> [Sends the price of a Omen and what I am willing to part with one for.] Confucius> "Cool aright thanks!"
So in the end I made some money out of it after all since the confused pirate did not really know what he was doing. I felt a little bad for him but in the end he and his friends got a good deal on 6 Omens with a chance to get them for free. I had fun and was laughing for a while.
So to Confucius thank you for your business if you need anything else let me know, preferably not at gunpoint. Just as a note. When they stopped shooting I was halfway through armor. So they could break my Orca. |

*conga's around the station* I mean as long as pirates honor ransoms so long I will keep paying them. If I know that they will blow up my ship even if I pay it then I won't take that extra loss. But there are still a few "honorable" pirates around and its nice to see. I will always be willing to pay to not have my ships blow up since its annoying to have to make a new one. |

Jonestu wrote:Episode 4: The tale of the confused pirate Right so I promised another story so I will deliver. (Confused Pirate will be called Confucius from here on.) Confucius> "500m or we blow up your Orca." Me> "I do not got 500m and I kinda really need this ore. Can we come to some other arrangement?" Confucius> "No! Rum, booty and ISKis is all we want." Me> "How about this, I got some ships that you might want and I will contract them to you." Confucius> "Wait... you will give me ships?" Me> "Sure, I got 500m in assets but I don't got it in ISKis right now." Confucius> "Well.... what kind of ships do you got?" Me> "One moment...." Me> [Link to the ships I have made and was planing to sell.] Confucius> "So we can chose one ship each?" This is where I began to think that he was not all to old in EvE and maybe English was not his native language. May I go now?" Confucius> "Sure you can go." I put the contract for 1 day since I assumed they would accept it right away. Me> "Sure but I will put a price on them this time, just above material cost so I make a little profit." Confucius> "Oh ok thats nice, how much each?" Me> [Sends the price of a Omen and what I am willing to part with one for.] Confucius> "Cool aright thanks!" So in the end I made some money out of it after all since the confused pirate did not really know what he was doing.
I don't know what to say... you just reverse-flipped pirates and they thanked you for it. :D

The only reason why I did it was because he rejected my contract, I would have happily handed over those Omen's in return for my Orca's life. But he rejected it and when I asked about it he was happy to pay for the ships. I will happily sell ships to anyone that needs them and he got a good deal because I am nice at times. |

Oh and I do got a story when I got royally screwed. I was new and I was not well versed with EvE it was my first rage in this game and looking back I was stupid as hell. But you will see.
So I had finally gotten into a Retriver, god I was so proud of myself. I was a miner and I was amazing, I was raking in ISK(in my mind that was). I knew that it was dangerous to jetcan mine since I had been told that there was a cleaning patrol known as pirates that came around now and then and cleaned up the system and freed the 'roids from those nasty miners. But I had just managed to save up to a Covetor, it was almost all my ISKis and I had started a Hauler alt that was in a Iteron. God I was so proud. So I decided to try this jetcan mining I had heard so much about and those nasty canflippers would never target me I was still new to the game so they would leave me alone right... Oh once more I was wrong. So rolling out in my beloved Covetor I had named "Triforce" (Three stripminers...) I warped to a belt and began to mine along, jettisoning everything so I could come in on my Iteron later and reap the rewards. So blissfully happy I see another friendly miner there coming out in a Retriver. I did not notice that he went very close to my can since it was just another friendly miner. So when I put some more ore into the can I decide to split it up into two can's. One for Veldspar and one for Scordite... that was a mistake. So I see the Retriver warping off and I thought 'Oh well I will mine alone.' I warp out in my Iteron and begin to scoop up everything in my can's. Then suddenly a Trasher appears. Oh this is bad I thought since I was still afraid of can flippers. I had not paid attention to the popup when I opened the can either.
So quickly my iteron is locked and it pops quite rapidly. I am in shock, 'What is this, why is he blowing me up, what have I done towards him?' Well... if you do not pay attention and someone steals your ore, or look on overview and see the change on their ship then blame yourself... or so I say now.
He then proceeds to lock my Covetor and I begin raging in local about someone blowing my ship up and how unfair this is towards miners. I was so angry, when I am in hull he opens a convo asking me what my ship is worth to me. As I said I had nothing since I spent everything buying the Covetor. I beg him not to kill me, then I get angry and tell him to stick his guns where the sun does no shine and so forth. So he blows me up... God I was angry.
So I left eve for about 1 day before I calmed down and thought about it, well I did not pay attention. I should not fly what I can't afford and I should not rage in a bloody game. So thanks to that pesky pirate I learned very quickly that this is just a game and either you make the best of your situation or you just don't play. So I did the best I could. I did only fly what I could afford, I began to hoard ore and BPO's so I could build my own ships so it would be less of an impact on me if I lost a ship. So now when I meet pirates I usually have quite fun. Most of them are decent people that are just using another way of making ISKis. I kill defenseless asteroids, they kill defenseless miners... or if they are nice, ransom me for ISKis instead so I can still make a profit and they will be able to ransom me another day.
So a word to all you raging carebears. I have been there as well, it sucks to loose everything you have but please don't make an ass of yourself as I did and if you loose something then make the best of it. Heck the fittings I use now to counter pirates I got together after getting suggestions from pirates blowing me up. So don't be a douche and try to be polite even when someone kills you. Who knows maybe that pirate is looking for a indy person to help him build ships, ammo or modules for his corp. Remember this is a open PvP game, hisec is false security and you can't trust anyone thats not in your corp... and not always then either.
And to you pirates that honor your ransom, I salute you. |

Conflicting....emotions....
urge to tell carebear he is 'doing it wrong' rising....
smited by carebear's story of getting out of a ransom attempt and then making a profit....
On one hand, you are so naive it's almost painful. On the other hand, we were all there once, and your attitude is in the right place for eve.
I don't want you to become jaded too soon, so rather than an explanation, I will simply leave you with the term: "opportunity cost". You'll have an easier time with the grind if you familiarize yourself with it. Poster is not to be held responsible for damages to keyboards and/or noses caused by hot beverages. |

love it. absolutely love. You sir, are no longer a carebear. You have risen above your fellow miners and industrialists into a special group we call the 1%ers. A great rank for those who know that eve is not kind to the stupid. Senn Denroth - Highsec PVP is only for the elite of the elite....
