Keynote: The teenage utopia of Dazed And Confused, in 10 screenshots
There will be another article, and then a roundtable discussion article as the week progresses.
"Linklater follows each of these storylines through to the end, though ultimately heGÇÖs less interested in the narrative of Dazed And Confused than he is in getting 1976 right, getting Texas right, and getting adolescence right." Believe me, America was indeed more of a Utopia back in 1976. I was 11. I was there. "He has mounted his hind-legs, and blown crass vapidities through the bowel of his neck."-á - Ambrose Bierce on Oscar Wilde's Lecture in San Francisco 1882 |

Ah, I was just being born then. Too poor for Utopia, we lived in a 20' camp trailer, for about 10 years. I dumpster dove and collected cans and bottles to recycle for propane and gas money for the Ford LTD that always caught fire LOL. That was my childhood. NO I will not take your sister for payment! I'm married to one sister already! |

Where on Earth was there recycling back then in America especially ? (Florida still has no recycling at all In fact they just started in Houston where my family lives last month.) The paragraph about the "Greek Chorus Intelligentsia" of Mike, Tony, and Cynthia details accurately my own personal experience. Eerily close. "He has mounted his hind-legs, and blown crass vapidities through the bowel of his neck."-á - Ambrose Bierce on Oscar Wilde's Lecture in San Francisco 1882 |

I bought my first rifle with the cash I made from crushing aluminum can I collected from the trash cans after the soccer games were done at the local parks.....in the mid 80's. I crushed so many stinking cans that it is not even funny. |

There is a lot to be said about this quote from part II.
The end of the film, where everyone drives off to buy Aerosmith tickets, didn't happen in 1993, and it certainly doesn't happen today. What that means in terms of basic human interaction is something I always think about when revisiting the film, and it makes me pine for that analog time, paddlings and all. |

I actually found this line in the article to be quite bizarre.
They must have forgotten that the use of Sweet Emotion in the film did stir up interest in Aerosmith after the film was released. And they had a rather remarkable comeback (having had one already when they worked with Run-DMC in the 80's.)
So, I always figured that the 1976 Aerosmith tickets was a joke, since those watching in 1993-4 could just as easily be enthusiastic about Aerosmith tickets.

But we did not typically drive off in a group to get tickets to shows in the mid 90's. Usually one person called ticket master and used a parents credit card to get the tickets or went to a ticket master provider and then everyone else would pay them for the ticket. Or we would just show up at the door and pay for the tickets right before the show. I think the comment was not really about Aerosmith, in my interpretation, but more about how technology has splintered interpersonal interactions in society, especially at the young adult level. That being said we always and still do get into a cars and go to shows in groups. |

Yeah. There is the TicketMaster effect.
Young kids watching this today probably wonder how the people in the 70's kept from going crazy without their iPhones and such. And startled by how much the people actually talk to each other.
ed: IIRC, I don't believe anybody in the film ever even uses a phone at all. I may be wrong. "He has mounted his hind-legs, and blown crass vapidities through the bowel of his neck."-á - Ambrose Bierce on Oscar Wilde's Lecture in San Francisco 1882 |

Part III (final): The could-have-been stars of Dazed And Confused
"A couple of weeks ago, Matthew McConaughey became the third Dazed And Confused cast member to win an Oscar, following Ben Affleck (for co-writing Good Will Hunting) and Ren+¬e Zellweger (who is uncredited in the film and has no significant lines, but is clearly visible in multiple scenes).
"All three were essentially unknown when the movie was made, and so, to varying degrees, were Jason London, Parker Posey, Milla Jovovich, Cole Hauser, Joey Lauren Adams, Adam Goldberg, and Anthony Rapp.
"All the same, whatGÇÖs arguably even more extraordinary is how many terrific performances were given by actors who didnGÇÖt go on to fame and fortune. I remember some of mine smuggling Gasoline across the Venezuelan border into Colombia to earn some money so my uncles could afford stuff for their families, I even learned how to hose down gasoline from a gas tank using a thick hose and like all newbies swallowed some of it in the process, as everybody laughed and gave me some Aguardiente to pass it up
To this day that border crossing brings a lot of memories Inner Sayings of BrujoLoco: http://eve-files.com/sig/brujoloco |
