I can't figure out what tabs I actually need. I understand, mostly, how they work and how to set them up... but I'm not satisfied with what my tabs display and I'm not certain what I'll need as my career in Eve advances.
My plan right now (I'm still leveling up and running basic missions) is to join a FW corp. So I plan on running dungeons/complexes and plan to engage in a decent amount of PvP.
But all the tab options I see everywhere (everyone suggests different tabs with different content) has started to spin my head around.
- I just want basic reliable tabs for a regular mix of PvP & PvE. If possible, I'd like that on my primary first tab.
- Then I feel like I need something to loot wrecks and to find cargo containers (common in missions).
- A drones tab seems like it might be useful and necessary.
- And a tab to work with my directional scanner seems like a good idea (but I don't know what content to include in that).
- As for the fifth tab... I'm at a total loss for what I might actually need.
I realize this probably looks like 100 posts in the noobs section, but I find that the all of the tab recommendations in all the various guides are all over the place. So... I was hoping I could get some more personalized tips/pointers/ideas/suggestions if anyone has a couple minutes of their life to spare. I'm looking for something that works for me and which I might be able to keep using indefinitely. |

I have a standard flying tab... setup to alert me to things that are going to shoot me... and who I am allowed to shoot... it has minimal other clutter... I have a tab for asteroids... which just has asteroids I have a tab for salvage... just has wreaks And I have a GTFO tab to allow me quickly find a celestial to warp to when things go pear shaped. There is no such thing as a fair fight...

Another newbie here, however I've found the following tab setup useful:
Tab1 - Default - shows everything. Tab2 - Mining - Shows Asteroid Belts & Asteroids Tab3 - GTFO - Shows Moons, Beacons, Stations, Celestials. Something that I can pre-align to to get out quick. Tab4 - Targets - shows targets, wrecks and containers.
My 'Targets' list does need tweaking, it currently has most NPC/Mission ships, Criminals etc, but will need to be adjusted for when I know enough about the game mechanics to move out of the starter corp.

Take a look at this page: http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Overview_Guide, you should find most, if not all, of what you are looking for there.
More importantly, it also tries to explain the mechanics of the overview which is important to understand, as you probably want to customize it for your own preferences (for example, I disable any blinking; annoying and purportedly lag-inducing). Forum-unbanned since 2011.10.20.

There actually is no 'perfect overview setup' that will work well for all your EVE career.
I'd suggest this approach to the problem:
1) Study as much as you can on the topic, get other people's ideas and suggestions (as you are already doing - good!)
2) Setup your overview in a reasonable way, but don't stress about it being 'perfect' because 'perfect' doesn't exist!
3) Undock and do your stuff (PVP, missioning, whatever) <-- VERY IMPORTANT
4) Whenever you find something is useless to what your doing, take it out of the overview (because focussed information is always better)
5) Whenever you find something useful is missing, add it to your overview
6) Go back to step 3
TL;DR pick any decent suggestion from the vets as a starting point, then be prepared to tweak it over and over again based on your actual gameplay experience |

This is it - ultimately, the overview is the lens you view the game through, so although people can give good basic advise, it isn't going to be 100% suitable, and you are going to have to do a lot of tweaking as time goes by. I have dozens of overview options, many just subtle variations on each other for special circumstances (primarily my combat tabs so I can cut out the noise when seeking specific targets in a large battle), and I am adding to, and altering them all the time. As long as you have a GTFO tab (sun, planets, beacons, gates, stations), a hostile targets tab (just things that can shoot you), and an all tab (for when you just cant find what you know is there on your current tab), the rest will come in time.

I guess you never leave high-sec, eh?
Moon on GTFO tab? You never ever warp to an unknown unscouted/undscanned moon. That's the worst thing you can have on a GTFO tab

You do know that unless you are in a BS+ ship, you can pand on a POS and warp out before it locked you.... Personal channel: Crazy Dutch Guy

Tell that to a drag bubble that drags you to a collection of cans.
There are tons of safe ways to land on a moon and even a hostile POS. Having a moons on a GTFO tab is not one of them |

Also, if you know that there is no pos at the moon you're heading to, it can be difficult to track you visually because the brackets for moons and planets clump together in space. My overview tabs: * General - Has what I need to see 99% of the time. * Wrecks - Wrecks, containers, drones, and ships I forgot to destroy. * Misc - Various purposes; I load an overview as needed, like for mining. * GTFO - Planets, customs offices, and stargates [no moons]. * All - Everything.
Beware of playing with state, as it doesn't work as one would expect, i.e. it is really stupid (this is the reason why one cannot have an overview only showing war targets). If any of the unchecked boxes apply, the object will not appear on the overview.

Well, I've been playing for less than a month so far, so... no. Many thanks for the tip though, it is appreciated.
I'm building a pvp/low/null sec alt up on another account. This character (my main) will probably be the hi-sec bunny.

Moons are avoided because they tend to have a POS, which can attack you below 0.5 sec.
Mind you, POS defenses are in general slower than molasses on a cold morning, so one can often evade them. It takes roughly 90 seconds fora POS warp disruptor to lock onto a frigate, but upwards of about 10 seconds for small turrets to lock the same frigate.
Moons may also have mobile warp disruptors anchored. More likely than other celestials.
With all of the other celestials available though, moons just are not worth the risk. |

I prefer belts, and Custom Offices on my GTFO tab for NS and wspace, but moons are great for HS and LS as there are no bubbles in there and it's much harder for pursuers to track you. Former forum cheerleader CCP, now just a hopeful small portion of the community. |

My setup goes something like
- Combat - Minimal clutter with enemy ships - Friendlies - Minimal clutter with friendly ships - Celestials - Used for quick warp-outs and d-scanning (keep moons in a separate profile so you don't warp to a POS by mistake) - PVE - Shows npc rats and mission objects - Wrecks - Shows wrecks, cargo containers, corpses, drones and other stuff you need occasionally
I've written a little overview settings guide which you may find useful while setting up your tabs. Some of the options are not very intuitive. www.ensignyooch.wordpress.com
