I want to try out exploration and see if it is right for me. I can fly any race's tier 1 ships right now or with some minimal training. |

First, tier and tech mean different things. I'm going to assume you mean tech 1 not tier 1. For exploration all of the ships are pretty similar. If you're just doing data/relic sites the magnate, heron, imicus, and probe are all good. If you want to do combat sites, you'll probably need to move up to a larger ship or assault frigate to complete anything harder than the most basic sites. Use eve survival to check difficulty. From best to worst: Heron Probe Imicus Magnate
Heron has the most midslots which allow to fit scaning mods in addition to hacking and prop mods. Probe and Imicus have the same slot layout, but Probe is faster and has better agily. I wouldn't suggest using the Magnate because you could not fit scanning mods in addition to hacking and prop mods.

Magnate has the largest cargo and arguably looks the best
The Astero and Stratios are also tech 1, though like all "pirate" ships require two races of frigate/cruiser skills: Amarr and Gallente. |

I would argue the Heron looks the best. But that's me.
The Imicus looks like the designer spilled ink on their canvas and decided to turn it into a ship design. I'm just sayin'. |

Since I fly mostly Minmatar I am partial to the Probe. (flew it for years... then noticed one day it had a drone bay.... I wish I was joking) |

I used to do level 1 missions in a mining Bantam (before mining frigates were abolished and replaced by the Venture), with the single drone doing all the work. |

I'm thinking I'll stick to T3 BC just to make sure there is still some level of confusion remaining. |

I still use the name tier 3's for them.
But as ISD suggested, another nice new name for them are ABCs (Attack BattleCruisers). Personal channel: Crazy Dutch Guy

I'm getting kinda tired of people giving only data/relic exploration as an option.
to the OP; you can also do combat exploration and this can be hilariously worthwhile even in high sec, meaning you can make tons of isk while being "safe" and allowing for AFK and not paying too much attention. You don't need anything fancy for it, if you're new just get a Destroyer, tank it for the damage types of your faction of choice and simply add a probe launcher. |
