Hi forums! Its been long time since I last tried this, so I wanted to ask before wasting time with it again.
How is EVE running virtualized nowadays?
I mean specifically on Linux host with Windows 7/8 guest? As I understand Vmware is better for this, even though I usually use Virtualbox for my Virtualization needs. Is one of the Vmware procuts better than others for this?

Any sensible virtualisation for 3D games requires VGA passthrough. Whch is a giant secure container of worms by itself (2 videocards, right CPU and mobo, I think NOT vmware or virtualbox, but rather Xen or KVM). |

I cannot comment on the virtualization, but just to be clear, Eve runs better on Windows.
However, running inside a VM with a proxy is a well tested spy technique, and I hear it works well. |

I have not been checking on this lately as I stopped playing EvE on Linux some time ago. I stopped because I had troubles with wine and the quick look I had at virtualization options told me it was not yet possible.
But things have evolved lately and Ubisoft made a demo using Xen where they ran DirectX games on domU Windows and an Ubunto dom0. So I think it's possible now.
However, KVM, VMware or VirtualBox will not work ! They provide option for OpenGL only ! Not DirectX. At least, I've not seen anything like this. So if you want to run this, you will have to run Xen with VGA passthrough. That is the only option I know.
Xen is not the easiest VM technology. It's not really working out of the box as VB. But turning your current linux host into a dom0 shall not be too difficult. The network configuration step could be a bit more tricky though. Have a look around on the Internet, there are plenty of howtos. Also, the Xen wiki is an invaluable asset: http://wiki.xen.org/wiki/Main_Page.
Here is the article dedicated to VGA passthourgh: http://wiki.xen.org/wiki/XenVGAPassthrough.
Let me know if you're giving it a go. I've set up a Xen server running several Windows domU with a "not that easy" network topology in a professional environment. I'd be happy to give a hand. |

AFAIK KVM does have VGA passthrough. At least there's an article on debian wiki on the subject. |

KVM and Xen should both have VGA passthrough, seems to requite VT-D support from CPU which mine doesn't sadly have. |

Xen and kvm with pci-passthrougt work fine. I Tested with xen. Note that you need a dedicated gpu for EVE VM.
Also, new with xen 4.4 is vgagt from Intel. It allow sharing one gpu with many vm and dom0 with a 75% native speed. Might work just with intel for now, need to look into that. |

Don't waste time, just run wine ;)
Playonlinux is a nice front-end that spares you from setting everything up manually. They have an install script for Eve, performance is native, I would say (no Captain's Quarters, DX9, but wth). |

Good to know !
@Sister Hyde: wine is fine, but what when there is no more DX9 support in our favourite games ? I have absolutely no clue on what's going on in the wine development so we have no clues about whether or when DX11 will be supported.
Best way to avoid problem: be ahead of 'em ! |

I've been running Eve on Windows 7 in VMware Player v6.0.1. My host system runs Ubuntu 12.0.4. Eve runs fine for me. It feels like native graphics support. |

Agreed. Running 14.04 works fine via wine for me.
I tried to use VMWare Workstation 9 under Ubuntu about a year ago under Win 7 for EvE. It was .. marginal. Not viable for fights, but fine for skill training. Have not retested with workstation 10 |

Hey! I did this in Xen, with one graphics card. It's finnicky, crashes now and then and you have to use SSH, VNC or other methods of reaching the linux dom0. That said, it booted my native Win7 installation in a domU after a lot of fiddling and behaved more or less just like if I booted into Windows. Some strange quirks though, it requires that you "eject" the graphics card in Win7 before you reboot or it will lock up the dom0. It also seems to lock up randomly anyway and you have to kill the whole computer, defeating the purpose.
I switched to UEFI boot now, and Xen doesn't want to boot that, so it's on ice for now. Two graphics cards (even just a dual solution like in the laptops) will make it a whole lot easier though, VGA passthrough to a single GPU was real tricky.
Performance seems fine, as should be - however I had to buy a new motherboard with the right passthrough settings support, they are few and far between. (Needs to support VT-d IOMMU). |

I set up a VM with VGA passthrough using KVM and vfio, and 3d worked fine. I didn't test EVE specifically, but i would expect it to work fine. I was unfortunately forced to give up on it due to the fact that it would constantly cause the host to freeze when starting the VM, forcing a hard reset and causing disk corruption, eventually to the point where the host would no longer boot even after using fsck on a liveusb. I was using a GTX 660 on the host, passing through a GTX 770 to the guest, with all the appropriate driver patches and an Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z mobo |
