I am sad to say this but I hope CCP makes EVE Valkyrie playable without the use of a Oculus Rift because there is no way in hell I am going to buy one now. Can you imagine having Facebook ads streamed directly onto your eyeballs? For ****'s sake |

why would there be facebook ads?
This really makes no since. If you are going to fork out $300 for a the headset, there won't be ads. And Facebook will get its money from you. If you then download a free game and play it, then yes it will have ads, just like on your phone. |

Big tech companies have had an appetite for buying up start-ups and effectively killing them in the past few years if you haven't noticed.
Also, Facebook will probably be leeching usage data and potentially more off of Rift. You might not care, but a lot of us do. After all, these are the people who just put together a facial recognition database
edit: Not to mention this whole event has been incredibly disingenuous to people who supported the Rift kickstarter. Some people won't support it on principle. Notch has just announced cancelling Minecraft for Rift, and a lot of people are claiming refunds on pre-orders. Hopefully this 'kickstarts' other companies to get into VR, similar to what Sony is doing with Morpheus |

its like this... Nintendo owns pokemon. That's right, its a Nintendo product.partnet (at least it was a few years ago) when you watch pokemon or play there games are there ad's for Nintendo on it? no? thwn why would there be ads for facebook or ads at all? There wouldn't. Just because FB partnered or bought oculus doesn't mean anything. It could mean they will gut it and make an inferior product, but that would mean facebook just lost billions.
With oculus getting money from facebook it means they can get the rift done faster then before.
You buy a company typically for 3 reasons:
1) you believe the product the company has could make you money
2) you want the companies licenses, patients, IP's, etc so you can use them to make money (ala EA buying Maxis and Westwood)
3) to remove a direct compeditor and to... make more money
As the rift is not on the market, and facebook has no VR platform, then it goes to believe it is prolly for #1.
If sony or Nintendo or sega or Microsoft had bought it i'd be worried. ATM i'm still excited and will take a wait and see approach |

That is actually a horrible comparison. First, Nintendo has over a 100-year history of doing what they do. They will never be the company to place ads in their games, it's totally not their culture. It's really comparing apples and oranges to put Nintendo and Facebook side-to-side. Second, Facebook acquired 'WhatsApp' recently, one of the larger mobile phone SMS replacements, and completely gutted it. It's a dead app now. They have done better with Instagram, but Rift is completely up in the air. It is not part of their core competency at all, while Instagram was. WhatsApp not so much, and it's dead now.
I don't know how you could think it would be worse for Microsoft or Nintendo to buy the Rift than Facebook. Again, gaming is not Facebook's core competency at all; it's not how they make money. Their business model is actually selling advertisements based on mined user data. That's what their entire infrastructure is set-up for, and that's what we can probably predict out of Rift. |

Umm... No. Nintendo is a different type of company. They make their income from consumer products that we buy, or watch in the case of the Pokemon shows. Facebook, on the other hand, makes most of their money through advertisement and the selling of user metadata. I have no doubts that, as time goes on, targeted advertisements will be found on Occulus. Maybe not in games (or maybe so), but definitely in it's other proposed markets, such as live sports streaming, movies, and television.

Now I know how everyone else felt when DUST 514 was announced as a PS3 exclusive. I already had a PS3 so the news didn't bother me. But now I'm bothered.
I hate... hate knowing that by purchasing a Rift, I'd essentially be giving money to Facebook. So my only option then would be to purchase a PS4 and go with Project Morpheus, which would probably cost more than the Rift by itself. But I don't want to buy all of that when I just want to play one game. I honestly don't really care about any other VR experiences right now. I just want Valkyrie.
This is really ****** news. Pod Goo & Tonic: http://pgandt.blogspot.com

I hate to say it but CCP should maybe consider just letting people play Valkyrie without the use of VR. I don't know if they already had planned for it as VR seemed to be a big part of the Valkyrie experience, but this news is just ****. I am sure there's some folks over at CCP who are pissed off as well.
Saddest part about this is Valve dumped a bunch of free money and R&D into Oculus Rift out of good will, and John Carmack took their handouts and turned around to sell it to Facebook. Hopefully this means that Steam is releasing their own VR platform in the near future though |

The reality here, is how the product is managed doesn't matter: Now that they've sold out, they've cashed in the faith and credit of their entire fanbase. A fanbase they can't buy back. Oculus Rift will fail without the community support it used to have.

Unfortunately, as per usual, CCP has surely already been locked in with a contract arrangement that they can't get out of. |

Obviously this is a giant conspiracy to bring CCP and by extension EvE down. Fark Zuckerdump is in on it.
Honestly for the next couple weeks CCP should be very open to the possibility of moving development to another VR headset. Or just do the same thing you did with Dust and release Valkyrie on a utility that is already being replaced by newer more supported hardware. You really think someone would do that? Just log into EvE and tell lies? |

Folks... read the news and how facebook managed its portfolio of numerous other acquisitions made int the past.
Facebook will infuse capital.
Occulus VR will perform as it has been for the past several years.
Facebook login is most likely not required for Occulus VR.
Just because Tata Motors acquired Jaguar doesn't mean we have to pay Jaguar cars in Rupees or have consumers hit with Indian policies.
Whining about how you will not buy Occulus VR because you have to "make facebook" is borderline stupidity and it is not something that a true EVE fan does.
Stop overreacting. |

The part you are conveniently glossing over is that FB has managed to pretty much kill every acquisition that sits outside of their core competency. The only thing that haven't really killed is Instagram, because guess what, it is almost the same thing as FB.

This is a deal breaker for me, their is no way I'm sticking anything linked to Facebook on my face. I guess we'll just have to see what Sony can do with Project Morpheus, and since CCP already has their foot in the door with Dust 514 on the PS3 maybe Valkyrie can be their exclusive for the PS4.
Either way their is zero chance of me ever purchasing an Oculus Rift now, so I hope CCP can figure something out because I was really looking forward to EVE Valkyrie, and it annoys me greatly that my ability to eventually experience it is being hindered by a company I despise literally buying out the sole platform EVE Valkyrie was intended to run on. |

Once you registered your details are gone to FB. I understand that there is a comparative product from Sony, which would be a lot more appropriate.
And if you have already purchased the Oculus FB, I guess you will now get a free preconfigured FB account. |

You are assuming that Sony wouldn't use any of your registration information as metadata for their own uses. The only reason people hate facebook so much is that they happen to own the platform that has had the most metadata gathered on it at the same time.
You are naive to think only facebook uses and sells metadata, why would Sony's VR product be any different? Your energy would be better spent convincing your politicians to tighten up on your laws that protect your privacy rather than get angry at corporations that have been labeled as abusers of that said metadata.
It's barely justified dissension of the Facebook brand that is driving all these prediction of Orwellian doom.
