Ah well, were we hoping they would pull out in disgust?
I honestly dont know anymore myself... BoBwins Law: As a discussion/war between two large nullsec entities grows longer, the probability of one comparing the other to BoB aproaches near certainty. |

I know my gut reaction is not in favor of facebook buying Oculus. I can only imagine all the horrid in-screen marketing now being planned for any future applications.
But I guess there is a very small chance they will just be the wallet and let the technology develop as it should. But hey if my stock was priced like facebooks, I would be buying anything and everything also with my like-bucks. damn it is hard to delete my signature |

This all depends. The rift is merely a hardware piece. Just by its self it can't post ads. And in theory, you may never see an ad for facebook or anything on it.
But, it also depends on how they plan to let you get games, and if you need a launcher. But if facebook remains hands off of oculus, and it remains open source... then you will see people quickly develops launchers that avoid facebooks garbage. The point is, flipping out over something when not all the details are out is stupid. Wait a bit longer and see. Besides a lot of people who wanted to play valk were hoping to do so without a rift anyway. So.... we will see. |

and on topic, why shouldn't the devs be happy? If they have a contract with rift, they won't just back out of it. As i'm sure ccp is a partner of rifts, which implies a contract. And i'm sure ccp got something form this deal too. But also, the influx of cash means the rift gets to market sooner. which means valk gets out sooner, which means possibly more money for ccp depending on how things work. For now it is a good thing. Now if FB wraps its hands around oculus VR and strangles it forcing it into FB's complete control then we have an issue. But at times, when a company buys another company they don't really mess with it. They want the product to come out so they can make money off it, and FB is looking for more ways to make money besides ads. It could be a win win, or it could be a huge failure. Just wait and see what news comes.
And as a note, I'd laugh my butt off if this was an elaborate april fools joke (but I doubt it) |

CCP attaching itself to Facebook just proves the people of CCP aren't as cool as they may have once been, or like to think of themselves now. They're just suckers from Suckerberg. Dont fight it; Rejoin your Amarrian patriarchs; You know you want to. |

I'm confused a bit. So a developer that has been spending time and money developing a product for a console suddenly realizes that the platform that they've been developing for has been bought by another company.
What are they supposed to do? They probably looked at it and tried to figure out if this would in anyway stunt their game release, and realized that it wouldn't. From that point, they knid of have to support it.
Is CCP supposed to have some kind of moral outrage? |

What did you expect?
Did you expect CCP to throw away the dev costs already incurred?
Their post is just PR fluff, they know that probably half their (non-USA) market for Valkyrie just disappeared.
Nobody in their right minds outside the USA has anything to do with USA companies where possible after this years revelations, but FB? A company who only exists to acquire & sell your personal data?
Dream on, you'd have to be a complete ******* moron to do that now. |

what the hell do you expect CCP to say? They have a highly anticipated game relying on the technology's new owners.
This thread is severely lacking in content. "CCP is changing policy, and has asked that we discontinue the bonus credit program after November 7th. So until then, enjoy a super-bonus of 1B Blink Credit for each 60-day GTC you buy!"

I suppose that's another CCP side project going down the drain.
Let's just hope the facebook contamination stays confined to Valkyrie and doesn't somehow leak into the actual EVE universe...

No but the consumer doesn't want their information downloaded direct to the NSA, along with being flooded with stupid ad's.

How will this change Valkyrie? Not much if at all. How this affects the trust placed in small companies to do what large companies don't (I.E. monetize the crap out of everything)? Greatly...
The issue isn't FACEBOOK... it's Occulus selling out their product before they made a single sale while riding on money gained from open crowd funding.
You know... funded by people who believed in these guys... Not so they could design the machine to be used by a large internet mogul in ways we can't predict in the long run. They didn't pledge to Facebook... they pledged to Occulus Rift. That's the issue.

While I certainly think its kinda crap that the people who helped get rift off the ground have not even gotten their hardware yet and rift is already getting a huge payday...
I think overall people are overreacting.
In the near future there will be a wide range of headsets available. Sure they might be a bit late to market. But they will come.
Its unlikely that games will be locked to specific headsets, because the headset does not power the game.. its just an accessory that plugs into your computer or console.
So before spending your days and nights wandering around in uncontrollable rage.. Just remember that all you need to do to enjoy your favorite games on a non-facebook VR headset.. is to buy one made by someone else. |
