I just lost my first battleship in PvP, and although I accept the loss as such and credit it mainly to my own stupidity, it got me thinking about target jamming and aggro timers.
Why exactly does target jammers cause an aggro timer?
What happened was, I got pirated by a group of other battleships. I tried to warp away, but I was of course warp scrambled. So I tried to target jam the scrambling ships, but I couldn't jam them well enough to get away. So instead I approached the gate, and made it with a small amount of armor left. But of course, when I tried to jump it said I couldn't use it due to my recent act of aggression.
Now, I ask myself... Exactly in what way did I show aggression? My drones wasn't out, I didn't shoot at the pirates, I didn't try to take their cap. All I did was trying to break their lock so they couldn't hurt me...
Therefore, I'm going to suggest the following: Make target jammers, target disruptors and similar modules not cause the "aggro timer".

They are (potentially) aggressive acts. I agree thats it sucks you get a timer at all for defensive measures, but remmeber, giving EW immunity would also give pirate EW ships immunity. They could have a scorp with tons of jammers and such sitting right next to the gate at every camp.

Why don't you just learn from the experience and next time approach the gate and jump?
Jamming / tracking disrupting / dampening / warp scrambling are all just as aggressive as shooting, they just happen not to cause damage.
EvE cannot establish intent when you use these modules, it doesnt know whether you are doing it defensively or offensively.
Here's a scenario for you: -
I'm a pirate, I know I can tank the sentries easily for a couple of minutes and I can lay a world of hurt on you if you can't shoot back. I hug the gate and attempt to jam you.
Jam fails? I jump.
Jam succeeds? I gank you.
Sound right?

Edited by: Kojima Masahiro on 07/05/2006 04:33:50 EW is aggression. You are impairing the ability of the enemy ships to fight. If there was no timer for it, you would see guys sitting on the game jamming/scrambling/etc. If you get teh better of them, they would just jump.
It would be lame.

Yeah, reading some possible scenarios where it would be bad for me if EW didn't cause an aggro counter actually makes my loss feel a little lighter. Thanks. :)

Edited by: Katamarino on 07/05/2006 13:20:02 Maybe you should NOT get an aggro timer if you are illegally attacked (and fight back in defence)...? That way, the pirate cannot initiate a fight with EW and escape flagging, but the victim can jam and run. Now, rip that to shreds someone...

There are enough ways to escape a camp as it is. Pirates have to make a living too :)
