Drunken Aussie's In Space - What could go Wrong

Hi guys,
I've tried several search attempts and I keep on getting a different answer. I'm considering getting an additional account started (perhaps another 2), and I'm wondering if it requires me to run another 2 pc's/monitors or is there a way two run several clients at the same time? If so, which one is better?
I'd very much like to know people's experience with this, and to basically tell me if there is indeed a cheaper alternative to this scenario.
Any ideas would be appreciated, and I apologise if my question has been asked before, which I'm sure it has...

You can run multiple clients at the same time. Multiple monitors help though. I have a triple monitor setup and have run up to four clients simultaneously. I run four clients on one screen. It does require a lot of window switching and makes it difficult to maintain situational awareness, but you don't really need much SA when mining ;)
By far the most important thing to take into account when running multiple clients is whether your video card can handle one client on maximum detail. As you add more clients, you'll turn the settings down.
After the video card, you'll want to make sure you have about 1GB of RAM per client. If you are running four clients, you want at least 4GB. More can be better, but double the RAM is pointless.
After that, there is little "low hanging fruit" and you have to start looking at whether the bottleneck for your installation is disk IO, CPU speed, or something else. Day 0 advice for new players: Day 0 Advice for New Players |

Okay...clarification time:
A. You can NOT run a trial account at the same time as any other account from 1 PC. B. You can run a trial account and any other account from 2 different machines (PC + PC / PC + Laptop).
C. You can run as many paid accounts from 1 PC as it can handle (or your finances can fund) D. You can run as many accounts on 1 single monitor (see point C), however multiple monitors help as you can actually watch more then 1 client.
E. To run multiple accounts from 1 machine, use (fixed) windowed mode.

Nearly perfect, this is exactly what I wanted to know, except does it mean that I have to download the client 2 and/or 3 times to run 2/3 accounts? How is this achieved? I'll stop asking questions soon, but this has been great help... |

No need to re-download. Just start the launcher, log-in, click "Play", click "Switch user account", log-in 2nd account, click "Play", repeat until all accounts are logged.
Side note: for some reason my graphic card did not like having multiple character selection screens open at the same time, so I had to select a character and get in game before starting a 2nd client. But that has been fixed by a driver update since. |

No
I ran 8 accounts from 1 single install.
Instead of that crappy launcher (I only use it when I need to update the client), you go to your installation folder > bin > exefile.exe
This will launch the game and you can click and open it as many times as you want. Personal channel: Crazy Dutch Guy

Why go through something totally useless as the launcher when you can do exactly the same as the launcher does....launch the exefile.exe Personal channel: Crazy Dutch Guy

For the sake of some comparison: I run two clients from my business laptop, which sports a pretty good cpu, and a moderate quality dedicated mobile video card.
One client runs at fairly high detail(in smaller fleets), the other with minimal, and tends to stay docked(market and indy alt), unless I need a scout. It gets a little choppy if I undock both, and if a fleet is up, but I could just dump down both to minimal, and be fine on FPS. But in general, despite the capacity, I wouldn't dare fleet up with both, due to the combination of performance and heat concerns. I can see myself undocking both for mining though, and I do undock both if I'm just hauling.
I also use fixed window setting, at a resolution one step below native. This helps performance but more importantly it makes switching between clients and spreadsheets and mumble and jabber easier. Not as pretty, but the utility is solid.
Therefore, you don't need two monitors, and you don't need two PC's, and you don't need a super-computer. But it still varies depending on your desired use. If you want to multi-box in Sov-warfare fleets, if you want to run high graphics on both, then your demands will get higher, but a moderately decent desktop will likely get you by. Eve is pretty forgiving in this way.
I'd suggest holding off on your third account until you're comfortable with your second.

I run two clients.
I open the client bypassing the launcher by pinning "eveclient.exe" (and I use "repair.exe" to update, again bypassing the launcher).
I then alt-tab between the clients. You get *very* good at this when you run one AWOXing character, and one neutral logistics character.
Edit: One monitor on the home computer. Three on the work one, but I don't have EVE installed here any more. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=326497 --áPsychotic Monk for CSM! https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=238931 - an idea for a new form of hybrid PVE/PVP content. How do you patch the game? I keep getting errors when I try patch from entering the game through exeFile.exe. |

Because the exefile.exe can't patch
You need repair.exe or run the launcher to actually patch. Personal channel: Crazy Dutch Guy

exeFile.exe claims it can update when you run it, just gives an error. Obviously it is not working, but doesn't seem to the intent it shouldn't be.
But ya, I use the launcher to patch, just annoying to need additional icons on your desktop for that / double the work when starting the game.
But actually turning on brain here, I can just use the launcher only, since they run concurrently there is no reason to circumvent it as I originally did. |

Exefile doesnt patch, it just tries to preload some of the patch files. When I see that my client is out of date I just close it and run the launcher file.

Most machines, even a decent laptop, can run 4 clients in windowed mode at minimum graphic settings.
As for running the launcher vs. eve.exe and patching, you only need to run the launcher to patch for the first client, once a day (or session).
Personally, I always use the launcher, but because I'm extremely paranoid, for reasons the forum rules prevent me from discussing. |

Thats a bit on the low end. I usually run two clients. They take about 1GB of RAM each. With the OS and other applications taking up some i very close to maxed out my 4GB of RAM with two clients and everything else running.
So i would say that 2GB + 1GB * number of clients is a good measure for amount of RAM needed for multiboxing in windows 7. 8GB of RAM would support six clients.
Four clients with 4GB will result in a lot of swapping to disk... |

My even older desktop gaming machine has 12 GB. I can run 6 clients on it (not minimized), but it tends to blue-screen with 7 or more.
Minimizing a client greatly reduces its load on the system. |

eve.exe runs the launcher, bin/exeFile.exe is when going around it, I am guessing you know just putting it here for others that read the thread.

Clients generally use less than 1 GB each with maximum settings and captain's quarters, limit yourself a little on settings and 4 clients on 4 GB RAM shouldn't be a problem.
And of course use an OS that don't use 1 GB of RAM on itself just to boot (Vista). |
