What does GÇÿSocket ClosedGÇÖ mean? This message is somewhat generic in that it essentially means your connection to the server is too unstable to maintain. It does not mean that you were forcibly kicked from the server as some players believe.
The game client talks to the server using the standard TCP communication protocol. Basically the server and game client sends packets of information back and forth to each other. When a number of packets are repeatedly sent and not received then the connection is closed and the GÇÿSocket ClosedGÇÖ message appears.
What causes the lost packets? ItGÇÖs important to know that the game client and the server are sending these packets out but they are getting lost en-route. So, the problem does not originate with the server or the game itself but on some hop on the connection between the two.
The cause of the lost packets is hard to definitely pin down as it could be caused by a number of things such as; damaged network cable, poor wireless signal, overzealous security application (firewall), ISP traffic shaping, routers blocking the default communication port or actual issues with your route between the server and your computer which are outside of the influence of your ISP.
What can be done to help maintain a reliable connection? There are some suggestions we can provide which may prove successful in resolving the connection issue:
- Reset your router/modem from the power supplies for a few minutes. ItGÇÖs a simple thing to do but it can clear problems that could cause your connection losses.
- Check your network cable for any kinks or damages.
- DonGÇÖt run any peer-to-peer (Torrent) applications alongside the game.
- Try to use an Ethernet cable as opposed to a wireless connection.
- Talk to your ISP. ItGÇÖs entirely possible that they are performing maintenance on your line which could affect the stability of your connection. ItGÇÖs worth asking if they are traffic shaping your connection in any way.
- ItGÇÖs worth seeing if changing the port that the game uses to connect through helps. You can find information on how to change ports in the Problems connecting to port 26000 knowledge-base article.
- You could also try using a VPN which will change the route used to communicate with the server. If there is a problem on a hop of your connection that is outside of the control of your ISP then using a VPN may mean you avoid the hop altogether.
Frequently Asked Questions:
How come one of my clients disconnects and the others do not? Each instance of the game you have running communicates independently with the server and vice versa. So itGÇÖs entirely possible that the packets are lost between one instance of the game whereas the other manages to get their packets through to the server and vice versa.
How come I am suddenly getting this error now? Nothing has changed on my system or connection. Since the causes of connection problems can be so varied it is hard to be able to say for certain that nothing has changed, especially when you do not have direct control over certain parts of your connection such as the hops between your home and the server. It is possible that your security application has performed an automatic update or that your ISP is working on your connection without informing you. These are just two examples of changes which may be undetected by you.
We do not totally discount the possibility that there is a problem with the server when you lose connection, but the server is heavily monitored for any issues which could affect player. It is however worth checking the EVE_Status twitter page to see if there is a known issue occurring with the server.
Why do I only loose connection to the EVE Online server? How come I can still browse the internet or stream movies/music? The connection between the server and your client can be a bit more sensitive to connection issues compared to streaming movies or music as they can be buffered whereas the communication between the server and EVE Online client cannot. As such if you encounter a connection problem when streaming a movie there is some leeway in which the connection can stabilize before the movie or music is interrupted.
How can I check my connection? Generally it is best to contact your ISP for assistance in identifying a problem with your connection, as they have more sophisticated tools available. There are however some tools that you can use to get a basic overview of your connection. These tools are detailed in the Network Guide wiki page.
To summarize
So basically the 'Socket Closed' message is just a way of the EVE Online game to tell you that your connection to the server is too unstable to maintain. When you see this message try following the suggestions above or contacting your ISP and asking them to help you locate where on your connection the problem is. Senior GM Arcade | Customer Support
