At the beginning it seems promising, until you realise that this all you'll pretty much ever do, ad-nauseam. At least in games like Monster Hunter the tedium pays off later when you learn precise timing and things, but EVE is just a dull clickathon, with an overly spreadsheet-esque feel to a lot of it. Jumping to distant star systems is so very boring. Combat is boring. The MMORPG quests are boring (even by MMO standards). Mining is boring. Everything is boring lol. The best part of EVE is that it's a sandbox. The game will not guide you along a path. You're supposed to find your own and enjoy the social part of the game. Talk to people, join a player group, betray that group and steal all their stuff, gank miners, be a LowSec pirate, join FW, join Brave Newbies, Join RVB, go into wormholes.
As Ralph said. "Content, go and find some." That's the whole point of EVE. Or you can return to your console games that shine a path for you to walk along. The PvE part of EVE is indeed quite dull. (Even more so when solo.)
What makes EVE interesting is that losses matter and that there are other players that will try to inflict losses on you. While this can happen in high-sec, if you want excitement you are more likely to find it in the more dangerous areas of the game. E.g. even if you don't like PvP, go run missions in low-sec, always watching dscan and local, ready to flee as soon as you see combat probes. It's not necessarily the better income than high-sec, but definitely more exciting. |

Easy there. There are a million ways to play this game. You've found 'missions' which is undoubtably the most dull part of EvE.
If you don't enjoy that playstyle try something different. Looking for inspiration? Check out some of the sub-forums like: Wormholes, Crime & Punishment, Warfare & Tactics, to name a few.
Also, if you are playing this game solo it is really difficult to get into and pick up a lot of the subtleties. There are easily 100 ways to earn isk in this game - you just found one. |

For new players or those interested in EvE reading this, understand that EvE is drastically different from other MMOs. That difference is why some find it very confusing when they start, and that difference is what has me so hooked on this game. Simple put, EvE is a sandbox and what you do in game matters. It affects the game world, those changes last. While there are "scripted quests" (missions) in EvE, they are by no means the entire focus / point of the game. EvE is a sandbox and that is the focus of the game. In my view, to get the most out of EvE you have to fully embrace the sandbox / multiplayer nature of EvE.
Determine what you want to do in EvE and understand that for good or ill your actions have consequences. Everything you build, everything you mine, everything you destroy, and so on has meaning in game. Do you want to build starships and sell them in Jita? Do you want to become a low sec pirate that also does high sec attacks? Do you want to join Faction Warfare? Do you want to work towards joining one of the massive null sec alliances? Do you want to become insanely rich in Worm Holes? That is only touching on the things you can do.
If you do decide you want to run the missions and story arcs (quests), understand they are not and have never been the sole focus of the game. CCP put them in there and you can have fun with them, but from my view the focus of EvE is the Sandbox and player interaction. In short, go find a group and see the game open up to you. I ran the story arcs, I ran the level one missions when I first joined. Then I joined a null sec Alliance and saw the difference between running a mission and participating in a massive null sec battle. After that I was lucky enough to discover Waffles (Sniggwaffe) and all the truly awesome that is Waffles. Trust me, EvE is so much better when played with a group. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=266074 - Sniggwaffe (Waffles)

Dull. Very dull. Then why are you doing that?
In EVE, everything you experience is because of something you did, or didn't do. If you are bored, it is your own fault.
This is not a theme park MMO that takes you on a pre-scripted ride. It is a sandbox MMO: you are given tools, then it is up to you do find or develop content with them.
EVE is more about social interaction than spaceships!
Doing absolutely nothing with a group of friends is more enjoyable than doing absolutely nothing solo. It doesn't take many friends either, but joining a larger group helps ensure that no matter when you get an EVE craving, there will be someone online to have a fun time with, and that they'll want to do the same thing(s) you do, even if it is nothing. |

I absolutely agree with you. The only way player can enjoy a game is to follow a predefined path of quests. But this game doesn't even have levels! How could we sheepishly follow the quests if there is no other gain than few ISK and reputation with Orgrimma... I mean Caldari Navy? Quests are the core of any MMORPG. It's been like that since World of Warcraft started the era of MMORPGs , and obviously all its clones like Ultima Online, SWG or Everquest follow the same formula. I don't understand why developers of EVE didn't get it and instead leave the initiative to players. How could someone enjoy generating a content in a cutthroat PVP game??? Totally bad design, I can tell you.
Mining.. don't even let me to start about it. Instead of having a couple of interesting peaceful quests to peacefully mine Arkonor/Bistot/Crokite/gas in a peaceful and safe area, we have to mine them in enemy nullsec or wormholes, mashing dscan button and experiencing adrenaline rush whenever we see an unknown legion on a dscan. How could that be possibly interesting?
And you are also right with that jumping to other systems thing. Why we can't just dock in the station and then magically appear on the other side of the universe completely with all our hangar? Imagine how awesome would it be to completely remove whole prosperous ecosystem of hauling corporations like Red Frog, brave haulers with their jump freighters or even low newbies in their fresh new Orcas trying to smuggle something valuable from Amarr to Jita without getting exploded in Niarja by the group of suicide gankers. Speaking of which, this would allow those suicide gankers finally to stop doing their (presumably) boring activity and instead they'd simply go QUESTING! Like in every other proper mmorpg!

Uhm
Maybe...because EVE isn't build as a PvE game, thus lacks deep PvE content. It's build as a PvP game and as a game where 99% of the game involves player vs player interaction.
If you find what you are doing is boring:
A. You are playing EVE wrong, it's a freaking sandbox, you can do what YOU want. B. You are expecting spoonfed content to be thrown at you in a scripted way.
You, the looks of it, are option B, maybe other games will suit you better. Personal channel: Crazy Dutch Guy

Every thing in the world reduces down to spreadsheets.
The eve playerbase having more spreadsheets dosn't mean any other MMO you might name could have just as many. It just means the playerbase of any other MMO you might name hasn't figured out how to break down all the factors to their fundamentals yet. Or doesn't care.
The Eve playerbase is more mature in general, and thus has a higher proportion of professionals, especially in the realm of statistics, and database development. So the quality of our third party applications, especially when combined with a publicly available API, really outshines other MMOs which have to cobble together their tools without any assistance from their game developers.

Eve isn't actually all that unique apart from the interface.
But it IS a pvp MMO, not a quest-focused single-player RPG with a couple multiplayer elements like WoW and its clones are.
You should pay at least a little bit of attention to what games are before signing up for them, joining Eve for the questing experience is like buying Dark Souls for the quick-time events. Most if not all of 'end-game' is user-generated stuff, pvp, and collaborative community activities, frequently all three (see "burn Jita" or anything happening in sov 0.0). It's probably closest in overall makeup to Dark Age of Camelot, of the MMOs I've played.
(For the reference of anyone that hasn't played Dark Souls, it has literally only one quick-time component, stabbing non-elite mobs in the back on the infrequent occasions when you manage to sneak up on 'em without being heard.) |

The spreadsheets are efficient tools when you need to manipulate mountains of relational data, and Eve is full of data. You should think the same then about hardcore strategy games like Europa Universalis or Aurora, in that case why to subscribe to Eve first?
"(..) but it's a very basic MMORPG (quests are all mostly 'go here/ go here and kill something/go here and fetch something')."
About the missions, I looked to some gameplay videos about STO and TESO and it's the same kind. The only thing is that in Eve you aren't apart from the other players, protected in your virtual bubble, but all the missions occurs in the same world and you can have some surprises during one of them, not because of a script but a human player, and that what makes things interesting.
As an example I began finally to jump to some low-sec systems two days ago, because high-sec is kind and cool when you begin the game but pretty boring over time due to the limitations with Concord, and after my first jump into this new world I haven't made much apart some gate and secure bookmarks to cherry popping my high-sec-only Eve experience. You know what? I had much fun, not because of the tasks I made but because of the "stress" involved like for example when someone appeared in local or when a spacecraft landed on grid during one of my gate-perch bookmarking.
The PVE features are only tools, and the other players constitute a good part of the adventure. The fun is the story you build with them. |

Well, newbie people that know what they want to do probably don't ask what to do... And about FC or CEO issuing commands, do you think a fleet with no leader would magically becomes coordinated just like that? Also, corps can be quite a source of knowledge. So yes. Eve is less spreadsheats than some other MMOs. Sure there are skills and they matter. But managing your ship is more important, such as strategic position, speed, range weapons types/damage you suspect the other guy has, capacitor and heat are all things you need to manage.
In fleets FCs make and break fleets far faster than numbers and skills. Properly fitted ships even with some moderately decent pilots and good FC can and do take on bigger more expensive fleets with more SP and win.
Other MMOs the outcome of battles is more or less determined by your level and that shiny sword you got in a micro transaction. As long as you don't forget to mash those buttons. |
