Having just "mastered" scanning - is there any way to slow down the cans that are eventually ejected? Or some other way to improve my poor hit rate?
Hoping

afraid not.
There is an implant which makes them last longer, which goes in slot 10. Can't remember which though. Steve Ronuken for CSM 9! https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=4236322 http://www.fuzzwork.co.uk/ Twitter: @fuzzysteve on Twitter |

switch camera view (look) to focus on the structure.
There is a mini-queue of 1. So you can click on the second can as soon as you see the tractor go off.
When stuff starts blinking if you see a high value can shooting away, double click on it to chase it down.
Don't forget to use your cargo scanner to figure out which cans are worth the effort.
Most of the time there are a few high value items and a bunch of crap. Who cares about the crap right? Just go for the gold, open the other containers with crap so the site respawns, and move on. Don't worry about getting all the cans. Thank you both.
1. I'll check out the implants, didn't think of that.
2. I'll get a cargo scanner - haven't bothered until now, just opened everything.
Is stuff only gettable when it starts blinking? I hadn't realised and click all the time! Perhaps that's part of my lack of success. I do switch view and sit at 4km for the widest view angle but it's still difficult to keep track of the cans going everywhere.
The EVElopedia article on scanning was what made it click for me. Is there anything similar for the scanning/hacking/loot picking up bit?

There is an implant "enrivonmental analysis" that increases the time those cans stay up in space. You can use a cargo scanner to know what's inside before you start hacking, and focus only on the cans that contain what you want.
blueprints are inside data cans salvage and datacores and decryptors are inside parts cans random salvage (often t2) is inside material cans Other cans tend to be worthless, so don't bother with them.
The best way to sucessfully take all important cans is to keep your ship at range of around ~3 km and fit a microwarp drive. You can shift-queue different cans while you're already tractoring one of them by just clicking the next one that interests you. With some practice you will never really miss anything important.
If you don't particulary like this loot scattering system, be aware that they are going to remove it next expansion. |

This will help you determine which cans to get.

You know, I missed that the mechanic was going away. But now that you mention it, I'm a bit disappointed. I spent a bit of effort and time developing that player skill and it wil all be for naught soon.
I remember them saying that they increased the drop rate to compensate for the new mechanic, so I suppose the drop rate will also be adjusted down.
Ahh well, it is an annoying mechanic having salvage modules and scrap metal FLEE. Because you disdained all my counsel, and my reproof you ignoredGÇö I, in my turn, will laugh at your doom; will mock when terror overtakes you; -- Ultimate Griefer's Handbook |

Hooraaaaaaaaay.
Though, that said, in the meantime you can just look up what the sites drop in general and just make a list of which cans to give top priority on the tractor-beam, usually a pretty simple x > y > z thing unless you need something specific for T2 manufacturing/research. Either in your head (not that hard to memorize) or in the in-game notepad. |

With this information you can get everything worthwhile no problem at all. It's not the most intuitive system ever but I don't really understand the hate. |
