Little correction there: it's in the damn driver of the graphics card, and by far not in every damn driver (in a speedy implementation that is....)
Nvidia has it, ATI has it as well, that covers a whole lot of the market, but the quality of their implementation differs, but that is the same for DirectX so basically there's no real difference there... last time I checked OpenGL wasn't Windows Native at all, it is neither a linux native as far as I'm aware of (needs to be installed separately to use a software mode, if the driver for the GFX-Card doesn't bring it...).

From Technet:
Open Graphics Library 1.1
Windows XP Professional supports the Open Graphics Library (OpenGL) 1.1 specification. OpenGL is an API that provides high-performance 3-D graphics capabilities for applications and allows them to be independent of any operating system. The Microsoft implementation of OpenGL in Windows XP Professional provides software with which programmers can create high-quality still and animated three-dimensional color images, and it supports applications running on Windows XP Professional that are developed using OpenGL, such as some computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) graphics applications.

Its in there.
The driver set for all major video cards include specific opengl drivers with extensions specifically for their hardware. These drivers are installed by default when installing the card drivers. The reason they are installed by default is that opengl is the STANDARD for graphics cross platform and are required for most graphics programs. (This is one thing most gamers forget or don't realize...opengl is a standard beyond gaming. ----- ------------

openGL is a generic platform while DirectX is a game targetted one. This makes the big difference by the game development (engineering) point of view.

To add my complaints and comments
Almost every one that has argued against OpenGL has no clue how programs are designed and run.
I started playing eve because I could get it to work on linux, I have also had 6 friends join because of this. People that run linux will buy and play games that run on linux to prevent the need from dual booting. I have purchased every game that I know of that runs natively on linux and will continue to do so. When CCP falls under the influence of Microsoft to much this game will no longer function on linux well enough for me to play and I will drop it and move onto the next. If you go over the forums this MMO has considerably more posts about getting linux and mac versions running, easily 7-8 times the posts. To me this states that more then a minority of its players would be interested in having a mac and linux native client and when it no longer runs on linux with few enough bugs people will do exactly what a lot of windows 98 users are doing. Drop the game because it no longer works with there system.

Edited by: Karador on 31/08/2006 23:44:17 Oh, come on.
Neither DirectX NOR OpenGL are as "easy" as they seem. Each one as his ups and downs. As every OTHER SINGLE API in the world. If you're not happy with the way CCP programmed THEIR game, go ahead and make one yourself. See you in a couple of decades.
And FORGET the Software Engineering stuff they teach you at the University: it is usefull up to a point. Grand plans (too grand most of the times) tend to fall down pretty quickly. And with business travelling at a fast peace as it is today, you CAN'T delay a project just because you couldn't find the prettiest UML diagram... Users and Customers want answers and results 20 MINUTES AGO, not in two months. Besides that, do you seriously think that the first job after the degree will allow you to make "big planing and design decisions"? If you do, well, welcome to the real world. Be content to be the new "CodeMonkey" for some time. Then build upon that experience.
