I got a little excited when I read it on Ars Technica as they kept it under wraps quite well. But after reading another site that stated Brian and Sid wont be actively involved my heart sank a little.
It still has modular units and expanding to other planets as the game progresses sounds interesting.
I wonder if you can still use nerve gas covertly during sun spot activity... |

My only disappoint is the video is just a cinematic, and shows no game play really. Just like all the latest EVE videos for expansions.
I want to see what I will experience, not a dolled-up version of stuff I'll never actually see.
It's like the old toy commercials from the 60s and 70s that showed all kinds of fantastic play, utterly unachievable in actual real life.
I guess some things don't change all that much........ "He has mounted his hind-legs, and blown crass vapidities through the bowel of his neck."-á - Ambrose Bierce on Oscar Wilde's Lecture in San Francisco 1882 |

That may be a good thing........in the way George Lucas has removed himself from Star Wars responsibilities now.
It could all use a breath of fresh air anyways. "He has mounted his hind-legs, and blown crass vapidities through the bowel of his neck."-á - Ambrose Bierce on Oscar Wilde's Lecture in San Francisco 1882 |

Yeah the eve videos have a ton of character based stuff...
I think CCP just like to troll with it. People, who talk, don't know. People, who know, don't talk.

Well, this has certainly gotten the most positive comments I've ever seen from announcements of new games in OOPE. "He has mounted his hind-legs, and blown crass vapidities through the bowel of his neck."-á - Ambrose Bierce on Oscar Wilde's Lecture in San Francisco 1882 |

Well to be fair Civ is a pretty well loved franchise.
I just hope people don't get hyped up over it, we all know what happens when there is too much hype about a game. People, who talk, don't know. People, who know, don't talk.

I am sort of looking forward to this, but at the moment my faith in Firaxis to produce a decent game is a little shakey.
Civ 5 is great, but it has needed two major content/rule change upgrades to make it the game it should have been when it first went on sale
X-Com Enemy Unknown/Within. OK, but neither are a patch on the original game. Very much X-Com lite
SM's Railroads. A pretty but terrible, shallow and flawed attempt to cash in on the old Microprose Railroad Tycoon.
I do hope that I am wrong, but will not start holding my breath, yet. |

That certainly does look interesting, but is it anything more then a Civ V reversed engineered game engine with all of the contents ripped straight out of Alpha Centuri? |

I'm still not sure about how I feel about the game, but its definetly more then just a civ/alpha cnetauri clone/rip off. I'm just not sure how much more.

Actually, after giving this some thought, I guess that exactly the same question can be put to Firaxis. Are we looking at a whole new game, or are we going to be charged top money for what is in effect just a heavy mod for the Civ V game engine.
Don't tell Fireaxis, but as someone with an embarrassing number of hours dedicated to Civ V on Steam, I wouldn't mind paying top money for an Alpha Centauri heavy mod for the Civ V game engine.
Seems to me it's going to be a bit more than that though, based on the little I've been reading about it (for example regarding victory conditions), even if the core gameplay mechanics will be similar. And personally I wouldn't want it otherwise - I quite liked the hexes, the removal of the stacks of doom and the tactical dimension these brought, for instance. It's a Civilization game after all.

Love Civ games. What would be really awesome though would be a 4X game in the WH40K universe. I would give an arm and a leg for something like that. |

Well Creative Assembly has the 40k license from THQ it seems since Sega bought Relic. So Total War 40k might become real. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara

It will be based off of the Civ V engine. There will be some significant mods though:
- tech web instead of tree, will have impact on choices and paths - 3 distinct factions that influence look and feel of your civ - starting conditions based on rough ideology when your civ left earth - barbarians are local critters and play a bigger role (probably like in AC) - apparently there will be some nice and cool story elements also
So yeah, heavy modding of the engine etc. Still worthwhile if you ask me. |

Isnt this game along the same lines as Sid_Meier's_Alpha_Centauri? Ladies, you know what they say about guys with big noses right? Heh-heh!! That's right, it means they are either Jewish or Italian.
