To delete those files would be stupid beyond any measure, and I'd actually just walk from this game and all CCP game's. If that were the case... New player experience, more highsec PvE missions, casual play, balance, counters to AFK cloaking, expanding the NEX store, and Power Projection.

Care to expand on this? Yeah, I'm already being called out on reddit over it. Such is life. Feel free to call me out on this, but out of respect for those who have been let go in Atlanta, and their families, I wasn't prepared to let rumors build over the weekend before we could speak to people, and whoever was posting information was wholly irresponsible and completely wrong in doing so. There's a time, a place, and a proper procedure for doing stuff like this.
I feel for those people that lost their job in Atlanta, and really hope the CCP higher echelon management understands that since 2006 they are the one(s) that are responsible.
Eve rule no.1: The players will make a better version of the game, then CCP initially plans.

I think for WIS to be viable again CCP needs to plan out a few things
1. Trash bin that god aweful engine that is Carbin. Look at alternatives to serve as a platform (Unreal, CryEngine3,ect)
2. Outlining what does the community want in WiS? When I think WiS Babylon5 come to mind, give the abilty to "Agent 47" somebody in their CQ.

People speculate all the time over such things, as I'm sure you are all too aware. Denying something so publicly, on what often are rumours was an unneeded hit to your credibility, unless ofcourse you were uninformed.
Either way I guess the main lesson is to run a tighter ship on conduct regarding internal memos, nothing is more enticing to this ocean of neckbeards than a little ccp drama.

While I feel bad for the Atlanta dev team, I can't help but feel like I should point out that when CCP announced they were looking to buy White Wolf....
I very specifically posted addressing CCP what a BAD IDEA this was. Not due to 'It will take dev time from eve' but becasue 'It will never work out'. To be true to the material it would have had to be the first R (or worse) rated MMO.
I'm surprised it got axed before it went to launch, but that may just be a sign of CCP's financial issues.
Hopefully, they'll at least give us WiS and more clothes to put the already written code to work and make back at least some of the outlay.
Unless your thread is limited to how 'awesum!' Eve Online is, ISD will lock the thread.-á You will find it is particularly common if CCP might have to make a public response to the thread subject, as opposed to bury it in the GM que for the forseeable future and then prohibit telling anyone what the GM said, if it's ever answered at all. |

It's a sad day both for fans and employees... Now you can make your 16 y.o audience happier with your crappy console game: DUST 514...
Yeah bro I'm mad.. I've been waiting for this game since 2006... So hell yeah I'm mad... All those promises... But who cares.. it's all about dollars isn't it..
But no, I'm not gonna throw stupid threats like : Bro I'm unsubbing.. etc.. I love EVE. Besides nobody would give a flying &@$! about it.
Anyways.. what about a kickstarter maybe? The amount of people who are willing to donate this game is enormous. Hell I've been throwing money at my monitor for 8 damn years, yet nothing happened..
When I first heard about WoD a couple of years ago I went to wikipedia to have a read up and was impressed at the depth of the game. Although I've never really liked RPGs I figured that if anyone could do justice to a game like this it would be CCP. So in a way I'm disappointed it's been canned but if CCP really had good reasons to think it was no longer viable then that's their decision to make I guess.
The idea of DUST seemed good at the start, a vast connected universe of ground players and players in space, just seems to me that it didn't work out either.

So why not have one of the c-suite guys in CCP actually answer these questions as opposed to Falcon emailing them and waiting for the official response that he then posts?
Because as shareholders of CCPgames they only have to give account to the other shareholders, the New Eden and fellow (former) White Wolf customers are not on that list as stakeholders so far I can see.
It's a shame they forget every few years this important rule in retail:
'There is only one boss. The customer. And he can fire everybody in the company from the chairman on down, simply by spending his money somewhere else.'

The decision was made to cancel the project because we don't feel we met our target of creating a fully immersive experience set in the WoD universe, and felt it was in our best interests to put an end to the project rather than retro-fitting it and re-hashing it further.
Is the CARBON technology CCPgames developed (for many years) not strong enough to support MMOrpg implementation ?

Quote: Dear Followers of EVE Online,
The past few months have been very humbling for me. IGÇÖve done much soul searching, and what follows is my sincere effort to clear the air with all of you. Please bear with me as I find my way through.
The estrangement from CCP that many of you have been feeling of late is my fault, and for that I am truly sorry. There are many contributing factors, but in the end it is I who must shoulder the responsibility for much of what has happened. In short, my zeal for pushing EVE to her true potential made me lose sight of doing the simple things right. I was impatient when I should have been cautious, defiant when I should have been conciliatory and arrogant when I should have been humble.
This soul searching took me back to when EVE was just an idea. Bringing her to life in 2003 was, in many peopleGÇÖs minds, impossible. But we found a way because EVE is something unique in the world. Getting her to 100,000 subscribers was an even more fantastical feat. Before long, we were launching in China, making DUST 514, merging with White Wolf to build World of Darkness, building Carbon, growing the company to 600 people, increasing our subscriber count beyond that of the population of Iceland and on and on, one resounding success after the next despite earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and even a world economic collapse.
Somewhere along the way, I began taking success for granted. As hubris set in, I became less inclined to listen to pleas for caution. Red flags raised by very smart people both at CCP and in the community went unheeded because of my stubborn refusal to allow adversity to gain purchase on our plans. Mistakes, even when they were acknowledged, often went unanalyzed, leaving the door open for them to be repeated.
You have spoken, loudly and clearly, with your words and with your actions. And there were definitely moments in recent history when I wish I would have listened more and taken a different path.
I was wrong and I admit it.
Remember these words

This is quite frustrating.
If there was a company that could make a WoD MMO, it was CCP and CCP alone. To be a WoD fan who depended on the universe's transition to computer games to keep playing (I can't LARP or tabletop nearly as often as I could, for various reasons), and to suddenly see yourself without any hope of a WoD game on the horizon is terrible.
For those hardcore EVE players who don't understand, I like a friend's analogy: Picture yourselves in 15 years, in a hypothetical future when non Virtual Reality games are a thing of the past, nobody plays EVE anymore except you and a hundred more dinosaurs (Try to picture a game as grand as EVE with no more than 200 players at your reach), and there's no Virtual Reality conversion of EVE. If you like the EVE universe as much as WoD players like WoD universe, you'd feel bad. You'd keep playing your old game, but you'd feel bad.
And EVE is not dying, but it's not dying just like a 40 year old man isn't dying, but it's showing it's first signs of wear. The devs seem to spend more time correcting bugs and adapting new features than actually implementing them because the code is getting old. And that's also frustrating. I think it's also a point to wonder, if you care to drop your affirmative bias at least a while, that maybe CCP isn't putting EVE aside (I personally think that's unlikely and obvious), but that it isn't as easy to implement new features anymore, because the code is old.
Also I saw some guys making fun of WoD players. It's funny because it makes me feel old but mature at the same time because back in the day we had the same disrespectful attitude towards older roleplayers and their different games, and we never thought the next gen would make fun of us with out super advanced, deep and mature game. But essentially, EVE players would have been WoD players and WoD players would have been classic D&D players were they born one gen before*. All the same minority, niche and loyal kind of player. The WoD, with the One World By Night Project (Google it), was the tabletop and LARP version of Single-Shard servers. And it's still running today with an impressive ammount of players gathering every month for sessions that are all interconnected across the whole world. It was something amazing before MMOs to travel to another city in real life and find out that your character's deeds are known and important to players you've never met. That's also the reason why CCP was the most suited company to develop a WoD MMO. And that's why I want to believe (X-Files style) that the WoD MMO will rise from it's ashes someday.
*Original D&D players are completely unlikely the post-2000 ones. They also don't exist anymore. |
