So just what was the theme of WOD?
Your ignorance makes me laugh when you comment on WoD as if you knew anything about it. WOD's theme is BUT NOT LIMITED to Vampires. World of Darkness in general is about supernatural creatures of night. Do you even read bro? Or do you only throw precocious and ignorant facts about a title with your worthless 2 cents on forums?

Yeah, I read Mr Hoity-Toity. But I usually dont waste my time on garbage. If the supernatural-menstrual theme is your thing, fine. But your tastes doesnt make you any smarter. Google WOD and you will see 99.99% pics of vampires and or blood. Ye don't do that. Code people are not Hoity-Toity, they're troll slagging so you'll bite and insult the rest of the WoD fans, just to rub things in. Tbh reading what the WoD fans have said over the years, it did sound like an interesting concept - mainly because CCP are smart enough to pull off well thought out games.
Those of you stooping to Twilight and Buffy sideswipe references need to remember - vamps are sexy - and you got Firefly out of it, so shut your dirty mouths. If you don't enjoy sucking, go spin your ship or w/e. RSI Nerds. - |

Vampires in 21st century folklore are very idealized.
They are handsome/beautiful and have a libido as well as a victoria's secret wardrobe.
Classic vampires are cold to the touch. Look like death, smell like the earth they were buried in and have bad breath. They cant stand the sight of themselves in mirrors because they see what they have become and cant stand the sunlight.
Ask any mortician just how "sexy" his clientele are.
The whole blood thing is pretty gross too.
What gets me is how some kids run with this and want to live the "vampire" lifestyle.
How many EVE players actually believe they are capsuleers? To be honest, if I were a game developer struggling in some way with an ambitious game project (motivation, financially, ...), I'd be very tempted to just give up after seeing the kind of cheap, simplistic crap that succeeds in the game market nowdays: Angry Birds, Flappy Bird ... Might just as well sit down and slap something together for the mobile market in 2 weeks and retire.

Was kinda looking forward to trying it out. Played the RPG when it first came out and watched the short run TV show that aired. Actually the history of vampires is much more deep than that. Most every culture on the face of the planet has some sort of vampiric story and many of them are not even close to the 'Calssic Vampires' you speak of. Also, the 'modern vampire' you speak of was actually created in fiction by John William Polidori in his book The Vampyre which was published in 1819. |

I want the door to open and I want station interiors in the inner decks to be just as gloomy as WoD was expected to be.
(Except for the Pleasure Hub that NEEDS TO BE BROUGHT BACK - don't gothic up my pleasure hub you scoundrels)
We should be allowed to buy and sell contraband in the stations, give a meaning to sneaking that stuff past customs - take illegal stuff off the "open" market - add more illegal stuff too. Nice, gloomy, stations to do dirty deals in. I know WoD probably had fog effects. There you go.

It is better to have tried and failed than to never have tried at all. The people hired to make this project a reality and subsequently laid off have my sympathies. On the bright side, they have experience under their belt, which is what most employers look for anyways. All CCP can do now is move on and hopefully learn many things from this experience. |

I'm kinda happy they've ditched it because at some point you just have to admit a certain project was a failure and it's just a waste of time and money to continue it. I'm not saying CCP couldn't make it work, or that WoD is impossible to make - I just think the two didn't mix together.
Some points however: - Underworld and Twilight were successful because they were a rip off of ideas V:TM introduced. Not the other way around. WW was brilliant about revitalizing the entire vampire and werewolves thing. They sucked a bit when they introduced this teenager friendly, emo-like edition, but I was happy to ignore it, and keep my old handbooks even now.
- CCP's mindset when it comes to innovation and stretching is hilarious. If I was to develop Valkyrie and Dust I would be 100% sure to get my existing playerbase into it. You get free promotion (and tons of it) when your players talk among themselves about "THE NEW GAME !!!1!!". This is how Blizzard operates and seriously - you will never get better at sucking your customers dry. Do you imagine them releasing Diablo III without pc support? If so - how much money do you think Diablo III would make? Stop being delusional, and make games instead of trying to prove stuff. No one cares if you are einteins of game development. Valkyrie will be on PC at least. It's a project started purely in-house by CCP (though i suspect they did get some funding from Sony afterall).
The reason Dust isn't on PC (yet, i expect an announcement for that at fanfest) is because Sony actually funded large parts of the game as part of an exclusivity deal. CCP doesn't have full control over where Dust can be deployed at the moment, though i fully expect this exclusivity to be timed so that it passes to at least the PS4 and probably the PC.
Dust on PC however adds some difficulties - Cheating is so very very easy in shooters and you want to do everything you can to prevent Dust from being abused as an easy moneymaker, or inluence on EVE itself. While cheating is not impossible on consoles, it is significantly harder at least.

But theere are gossips about Valkyrie being occular rift only, and that's something that already makes people skeptical about the game (they do not want to warm up for it just to get disappointed). This is the consequence of both bad PR and post-Dust514 trauma.
CCP could have established a good part of it's game community to religiously follow development of both. This would make said games more of a thing to talk about and drag them through gaming media services eventually where everyone could troll how they can't wait to make it happen.
Also, let's be honest, zealotry of eve players would sooth the first reception the dust got. Ability to help their FW effort by just alt tabbing into Dust (Alts: Online even more - eve customers' favorite) would pump the servers and create an illusion of interest/growth.
These are the pain staking mistakes I see that were in effect, and the consequences of which we see today with general skepticism towards what CCP does. Projecting problems with Dust onto Valkyrie is obvious. It might be overcautious but I think it's still a well founded doubt. Singature Radius 48 m |

Didn't CCP do this though when they released the 2013 financial information with the rather large write off in R+D costs. It didn't take a genius to figure out what that code write off was. |

CCP's been in status quo mode for almost 2 years now (since the perfect storm events of the Nex store debacle, a half-finished but released anyway Incarna and the leaked internal micro-transactions memos). When was the last true expansion of gameplay? That was when incursions were introduced. Since that time it's been refactoring, tweaking and "balancing". Those things need to happen on an ongoing basis but, it's about time to create and innovate again. When the world is running down, you make the best of what's still around. |

Falcon, you've mentioned multiple times in this thread that there are no current plans for the WoD IP. Well, here's a sugesstion you can pass on to the decision-makers:
Sell it. Sell it to someone who will give the IP the foucs, attention, and respect it deserves. After you have mismanaged it so grossly and wasted years of opportunity, the only decent thing to do at this point is to hand it over to someone who will be a better steward than you were.
As a side note for those comparing WoD to Twilight, I'll just say this: if the average Twilight fan spent any time in WoD, then in short order they would be curled up in a corner, rocking back and forth, and staring blankly at the wall while repeating "Where are the sparkles? Where are the sparkles?" over and over. Twilight is teen romance crap; WoD is mature horror. Equating the two is ridiculous.
Excuse me now; I've got to go reinstall "Bloodlines". |
