i have had trouble finding asteroids. I did find a good field today with about eight good ones in it and there were four other ships mining them .
I noticed for the first time there was a list of individual asteroids on my Overview list.
is there a way to get them to show up? Do you have to actively scan in a field once you get there to get them to show up? i was trying to find them visually and that is nuts. They are hard to see even close up.
I was not sure if i pushed some button by chance that put them on the list or if objects and ships will appear on the list if you scan..
thanks for help on this, it would be nice to be able to get them to show on the list rather than try to find them by mark 1 Eyeball.
I was not sure if they show if you use the tactical scan, the scan or what? |

No need to scan.
Open overview settings --> filters --> check all the asteroid boxes

No I have no idea how you got them on overview Scanning has nothing to do with it.
Maybe you accidentally switched to an overview tab preset to 'show all'? I don't remember if there is more than one preset tab for new players... Most players eventually create they're own custom tabs. |

Scanning comes in 3 main forms: -Site Scanning -Area scanning -Module Scanning
Site scanning is what you use the "Sensor Overlay" and scan probes for. The overlay can find anomalies instantly anywhere in the system. These are the icons in space that show up as green diamonds and can be warped to directly. The red diamonds you see are signatures instead of anomalies. Signatures need to be scanned with probes to 100% before being warped to.
Area scanning is scanning a decent portion of the space around you with the directional scanner (simply referred to as d-scan or d-scanning by most). The directional scanner's angel changes how wide the search is, based on where your camera is facing. The angle makes a cone out from your camera as shown by the changing icon on the d-scan interface.
D-scan is a very valuable tool that when set to a full 360 degrees can tell you when there's other ships or combat scan probes are nearby. When set to lower angles it can be used to point point which celestial object someone is at. And if there's more than one celestial along your line of sight you can use the range settings of the dscan to figure out which one it is. Combine this with the tracking camera set to a 0 offset and it's really to check all the celestials pretty easily.
The thing about dscan though is that it cannot be used to warp to anyone besides celestials and possibly people on your grid that are 150km+ from you (minimum warp distance). It can also be filtered using the overview so that you only get certain things.
And the last one module scanning. Module scanning is the blanket term I'm going to use to cover all forms of scanning that uses modules directly (so not the probe launcher used in site scanning). Within this category you have two divisions, informational and collection.
Informational scanners are modules that will tell you something about your target. These are the cargo scanner, ship scanner and survey scanner. The cargo scanner is self explanatory and Blockade Runner T2 ships are immune to it. Ship scanner will try to tell you what modules a ship has fitted and will tell you their cap level, a very important stat when your ship's purpose is the drain the cap from an enemy. The Survey scanner is an AoE scanner that will tell you how many units are left in the surrounding asteroids. Divide this number by the m3 per unit and you'll get how many m3 are left in that asteroid, if it's less than your mining yield you might wanna try cutting off your mining laser in the middle of the cycle.
Collection scanners are scanners that are used to get something. These are the salvager, data analyzer, and relic analyzer. In the case of the salvager you use it on a wreck and the salvager will attempt to access the broken parts that make up the wreck. This is a dice roll so it can fail several times before successful access. After you successfully access it you get the contents, which in some cases could be nothing. This is NOT the same as looting and can be done to any wreck regardless of ownership, regardless of whether or not the owner likes it :P
The other two work very similarly to each other. You take them to the respective cosmic signature site (data or relic) and use them on the special containers there. Here you will get a mini-game to hack into the container and upon doing so you'll get several cans of different types are ejected. You need to grab these by clicking them, one at a time to get the good stuff. They'll be automatically tractored in and looted.
Data and Relic sites differ on which containers have the good stuff, for instance in relic sites you probably want "Materials" containers. The cargo scanners I mentioned before can be used to scan the master container before you hack into it to see what's inside. The Drake is a Lie |

fantastic thanks so much for all that great intel. helps a lot to know what is up with scanning.
so the asteroids appearing on my overview are still a mystery. I went back and didnt find any in that adjacent system but they may have all been mined out. I am still trying to establish a baseline of info that I can depend on to tell me what is up with basic things like mining, which I will depend on for income for a while. thanks again for the details on scanning. |

If the fields are frequently cleaned out, then I would advising finding a more remote location for, or just get away from the people mining it. |

As stated the only time you need to scan for asteroids is to find gravimetric sites (which come up on your system scanner without the need for any probes; these are moderately rare and generally are in about 5-10% of systems at any given time).
The scanner you want to learn to use when mining is the directional scanner. It will give you warning of player ships that are close by but out of sight and (if used carefully) will give you sufficient warning to escape from most predators.
The most common ships used to attack mining ships in high security are Catalysts, followed by Thrashers and Vexors. If you see one of these appear on your directional scanner as within 1 AU, immediately pick a celestial and start aligning toward it and have your finger ready on the 'warp out' button. This will buy you enough time to (usually) escape.
In low security, wormhole space or nullsec, a mining ship is most likely to be attacked by an Interceptor. These are much harder to escape from.
By far the best way to learn to use the D-scanner defensively is to experiment with using it to find prey in lowsec. Fit out a frigate you don't mind losing, and look up a D-scan tutorial on Youtube, and go to a quiet but not empty lowsec system (I recommend Sharuveil or Goinard in busy server times, and Decon in quiet times) and try to hunt someone down and know where they are before you warp onto grid with them. Then shoot them, lose your ship (or maybe win the fight), and head back to where you usually live.
