As above how does ganking miners in highsec work? if your the person doing the ganking are you the equivalent of a "kamikaze" pilot? do you always die once you gank a miner or is there an escape?
thanks

Step 1 Find a ship and activate it.
Step 2 Find some random guns and place them on random spots of the ship
Step 3 Use these random guns on random people
Step 4 Die.
Congratulations! Now you are an elite PvPer. -á |

If you are in a 0.5 or above star system, and you fire upon any other ship illegally CONCORD will destroy your ship, and I am fairly sure that finding ways to avoid said destruction is considered an exploit.
However, if: a) you are at war with the target b) the target has an activatable kill right c) you are in a limited engagement with the target d) the target has a suspect or criminal flag
You can engage the target without worry of CONCORD destroying you. The other player is a different matter. |

cheers for the info so in effect a pilot who ganks miners for "fun" is more likely to be a kamikaze pilot who knows he's gonna loose his ship. |

Depending on the security level, you have between 5 and 20 seconds to kill the other ship. After that, CONCORD arrives and disables your ship. (And kill it shortly after that.) Also, professional gankers have a friend/alt nearby to loot both wrecks. The price of a single T2 strip miner usually makes up for the cost of the catalyst lost to CONCORD. |

Yes, we go in knowing we will lose our ships. If you look at catalyst losses, you'll be able to identify the gank ones because they will have absolutely nothing they don't need, and only just barely enough ammo to complete the job. TLDR = Suicide gankers are very bad or / and very sick people!
They are happy to lose their ships, usually to CONCORD but often enough victims get a mention via their deployed drones, to achieve any number of outcomes that they desire. Those outcomes include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following: - ISK. Suicide ganking can be very profitable. Just set yourself up with a cargo scanner for a session or two, and check the load values of ships moving to and from any market hub GǪ especially Jita. You will see many people carrying billions of isk worth of stuff, some tens-of-billions. These are the targets of for-profit gankers. - Tears and chuckles. Your tears and their chuckles ofc. Gank targets present a ripe source of tears-of-unjust-victimisation and these are very entertaining for the sick people that engage in ganking. - Kicks and giggles. Even without tears, and not necessarily at a profit, ganking can be an entertaining challenge. - Colateral benefits. Affiliated ganking groups (for example CFCGÇÖs miniluv) may also select special targets to further their coalitionGÇÖs or allianceGÇÖs overall aims GǪ e.g. known JF alt of an enemy alliance. - Experimenting. Like so much of eve ganking requires careful ship choice and target selection. High-end ganking gets very technical and is logistically intensive. ItGÇÖs just another element of this wonderfully diverse game that people want to give a try.
Hisec suicide ganking takes two main forms, one based on DPS output and another based on alpha. DPS ganking is what you mainly see on gates when an expensive-cargo freighter is bumped to prevent them warping and then a large fleet of catalysts warp-in and blap them. The DPWS ships rely on several seconds elapsing before CONCORD kills them all, and often go to elaborate measures to make the CONCORD response even slower. During those several seconds the gank ships each fire multiple volleys of munitions (and drones) into their target and, if theyGÇÖve executed the gank well, the target dies. Similarly, most hisec miner ganking is of the DPS variety. ALPHA ganking, at least in my experience, is more often seen on the station undock in high-end mission running systems. The gank ships do not expect to get even a second round of munitions off and rely on a single, high damage, shot. I donGÇÖt know what is most used now but tornadoes were very good for this GǪ inexpensive and with decent alpha. Two or three tornado could easily alpha-gank very expensive mission running tengu as they undocked, and a few more would make hilarious mince-meat of the machariels and marauders.
Like everything in eve there are counters to ganking. Probably the main counter is awareness, knowledge, and education. In knowing about how ganking works you are best equipped to avoid becoming a victim. HereGÇÖs some thoughts on avoiding becoming a victim: 1. Choose tanky mining ships and fit them to have some tank. Be alert for gankers. Orbit the ice if youGÇÖre ice mining GǪ just that little bit of traversal and not ever being in exactly the same spot can make the difference between an easy gank and GÇÿOh ****, too hard!GÇÖ. Avoid being too near the warp-in of a mining location. 2. Do not carry overly valuable loads in your haulers, freighters, or jump-freighters. Do not take any haulers, freighter, or jump-freighter to Jita during the GÇÿBurn JitaGÇÖ event. Do not autopilot laden haulers, and try to avoid autopiloting anything thru gank-infested pipes. 3. Use undock instawarp bookmarks if youGÇÖre mission running in a very shiny ship. Take a break from that station of you see a collection of non-mission-running ships, e.g. tier 3 BCs, gathering near the station. Avoid using very shiny expensive mission running ships GǪ if you have half-decent skills tech 2 fittings are more than adequate for most purposes. 4. Do not abuse gankers. Do not threaten them, and do not GÇÿcryGÇÖ otherwise. ItGÇÖs part of the game and they will take delight in anything and everything you say. DonGÇÖt bounty them, itGÇÖs just more of your isk and more pleasure to them. Just accept what has happened and get on with your eve life. I know thatGÇÖs sometimes easier said than done, and my first expensive gank-loss (4b isk in WH goodies in a mammoth GǪ GÇ£Only a couple of jumpsGÇ¥ I said) was very traumatic, but it is really the only way to avoid feeding those bad people.
Doubtlessly thereGÇÖs lots more things you can do, those are just some of the obvious ones that spring easily to mind.
Now, on the other side of the coin, ganking can be challenging and difficult and it can be a lot of fun. The logistics of high-end ganking can be quite awe-inspiring and when something like Burn Jita roles around again you get to see a phenomenal amount of preparation and logistic effort, dedicated to the unhappy-making that comes as a charter for the Ministry of Love. I hate the extortion and some of the victimisation that occurs but the actual ganking, and the mad rush to catch a target before he makes it to GÇÿsafeGÇÖ space, makes for some very frenetic and entertaining eve-times. If youGÇÖre adventurous and want to try more of what eve has on offer I thoroughly recommend giving ganking a try GǪ you might just be surprised. I was.
I guess I am almost a 'vet' by now. Hopefully not too bitter and managing to help more than I hinder. Our pirate epic arc completion packages really are very good: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=12973&find=unread |

Was the victim of this just today :( I'm in a Retriever in 0.5 space, 2 Destroyers warp in and a split second before my warp kicks in they pin my ship and pop it in just seconds.
I go back later with a Venture, all I can afford now lol. I see NPC police everywhere and their Destroyer wrecks as well. *sigh |

To suicide gank:
Get in a high dps ship. Set your safety to Red. Find a target you think you can kill before concord comes, and open fire on it. If successful, you'll destroy it before concord destroys you. Concord will destroy you 100% of the time when illegally attacking.
Things to know for successful suicide ganking: Concord response times are based on the systems security rating. In a 1.0 system, they respond almost instantly. In a 0.6 System, they take ~12 s to respond. In a 0.5 system, they take ~14s to respond. Concord's response time will be increased 6 seconds if the system has already had concord spawned in the system prior to your attack.
Use a ship scanner (and passive targeter) to scan a ship you wish to gank. This will allow you to see how it is fit, and perhaps put its fittings into EFT/Pyfa to learn its resistance holes and EHP. This will help you determine how to successfully suicide gank it (what ammo types, etc).
p.s. Suicide gankers are generally considered the dregs of eve's society. Be weary of social repercussions.

Oh wait... you are referring to the other definition?
I think we prefer to see ourselves as valuable procurers of two very specific commodities; fear and tears... both of which affect economic opportunities for our benefactors.

What makes someone cool is them not caring what other people think of them....soooo if the people who think they are cool are uncool and the people who don't think they are cool are really the cool people..then once an uncool person finds out people think they are cool they will therefore become uncool and once someone who thinks they are cool finds out they are not cool and stop caring about being cool they will then be cool which in turn makes them uncool again.
An easy to understand practical example can be seen by looking at listening trends in relation to music by The Beatles. It was considered cool at 1st but then over time became uncool which made trendies 25 years later think it was somehow cool again which made it instantly become uncool again. All while in reality it actually sucked the entire time.
Docked since 2009. |
