Let me preface this by saying that I've been a carebear to the 10th power. I'm a Dust dude that started an Eve account and I've been skilling up Gallente ships and Drones to the max.
Well here I am ready to fly my Ishtar, but I feel like I'm better suited for open heart surgery (I'm not a doctor) than dealing with the plethora of options available. I've searched Battleclinic and any blog that google will lead me to. I found an Odyssey post on EveMassively that intrigued me. I'd rather let drones do work while I'm at range as I'm still getting used to range control and dealing with modules and cap.
[Ishtar, Berserker]
Drone Link Augmentor I 3x Small Unstable Power Fluctuator I
10MN Microwarpdrive II 2x Omnidirectional Tracking Link II 2x Drone Navigation Computer II
2x Drone Damage Amplifier II Damage Control II Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II 1600mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I
Medium Anti-Explosive Pump I Medium Drone Speed Augmentor I
5x Berserker II 5x Garde II 5x Berserker II
This is a crap fit as I have to offline the fluctuators and skill up Drone Rigging to L5 to make it work. But I'm lost on how to accomplish something these lines.

First question is what will you be using her for. You said you're a bear so I was going to assume pve. But with a buffer fi you will be less than ideal.
Personally I prefer the 100mn ab shield "afktar" but it is for running anoms only in that configuration. |

Also as a side note, battleclinic is (nearly) a byword for "bad fits". Generally best to avoid it. A much better tool would be to look up losses on your kill board of choice. That will give you an idea on what fits are "normal" by how common they are used. Say what you like about meta but very smart folks spend tons of time so mag as well use their knowledge.
I'm actually going to be using it for PvP, I should have stated that. |

Okay, so I went to zKillboard and searched for Ishtar. I found a pilot that has done work in an Ishtar so I went down that person's list until I found one of their losses. In that fit from a drone standpoint it doesn't seem to rely on the ship bonuses very much.

What do you mean? He had gardes in his drone bay. Heavies are pretty bad for PvP atthe moment.
Your fit has no tackle, are you planning on running in a fleet or solo? |

If you are operating solo, I would HIGHLY suggest starting with a Tristan and then an Ishkur. Then move up to a shield-fit Vexor when you are more comfortable.
An Ishtar (especially a shield one that uses kiting tactics) requires a fair bit of micromanagement and tactical know-how. If you are coming from a "carebear" background then you will want to start cheap and get your feet wet before committing something expensive to a situation you may not be entirely knowledgeable or comfortable with. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective.

I have to agree with the fellow above. Ishtar is a very good ship. But it is not a good starter PvP craft. The odds are good you'll get killed often and become broke or frustrated fast.
Don't take me wrong, it can be a beast for PvP at any size engagement, but for most beginning PvP careers it just will have a horrible kill loss ratio.
Also any PvP ish must have some way to deal with interceptors. They are so damn common you have to plan for how to escape or blap them because you will see them. And typically for each one you swatt three more are born. |

Never fly T2 ships if you're starting PVP. They give 20% better stats accross the board normally, while loosing some of the flexibility of their T1 counterpart in order to become specialized.
Thats 20% of stats however can be exploited by experienced pilots to get almost 100% improvement in performance... the truth is though that you will die hard and fast in ANY ship until you learn the fundamentals of PVP.
learn some PVP in any ship (set destination to a system in the middle of nowhere and go die...a LOT). Next, try a T1/cheap variant of your target ship. get good at it. Finally, get into your target ship and it will perform amazingly with all that knowledge behind it. |

If you are going to use heavy drones, fly a Vex Navy w/Berserker 2's. And make sure you have a t2 drone nav comp mod in one of your mid slots. Anything to up the speed of your drones.
Ishtars are pretty much sentry boats now, IMO. Everything in EVE is a trap. And if it isn't, it's your job to make it a trap...:) You want to know what immorality in EVE Online looks like? Look no further than Ripard "Jester" Teg.

They are used as sentry boats for certain fleet doctrines. They have 'battleship' weapons (125m-¦ bonused bandwidth) but can sig/speed tank other battleships. They are good at killing brick battleships and such, however any form of tracking based gun ship will crush them. Also Stealth bombers wiping out sentry blobs isn't fun.
They are also expensive for what they do - Unless you 100% know your enemy, the Domi will be better 90% of the time. |

Wouldn't want to deal with anyone who shoots back, now would you... Fit a warfare link to your tech 1 battlecruiser. Train Wing Commander. Get in the Squad Commander or Wing Commander position. Your fleets will be superior to everyone else's. (had this sig BEFORE Odyssey BC rebalance) And bring back the missile Inquisitor!! |
