To tell the truth, I have backed (modestly) both Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous. From what I have seen so far, Elite Dangerous is making me much more excited for the time being. 100 billion star systems to (not be able in your lifetime to) explore, PG anything and everything from AI to graphics to actual game mechanics, and a serious amount of professionalism and focus from the developer studio from what we have seen so far.
On the other hand, I could be just projecting here due to old-fart nostalgia overload. But here are some sneak peaks...XD

...nerdgasm.
And then you realize that those ******* want you to pay 240Gé¼ for alpha access or 120Gé¼ for beta, essentially milking the cow with both hands and feet. At least the game will cost less than AAA titles when finished (42.5Gé¼).
Lets discuss this game. |

I am an alpha backer, and proud of it too. The moment this game was announced on kickstarter I was excited.
Seeing the game progress, and being a part of this is fantastic, and I'm loving every minute. The game will be great I know it.
Will it impact on Eve? That's another debate, but my personal opinion is no, it will not. Personally I'll still play eve too, just nice to have an alternative.
Anyone on the edge of the circle considering paying for beta, do it, you won't be disappointed. Don't bother paying the extra for alpha as the alpha phase is almost over. |

I have backed with a modest sum in the kickstarter campaign because Elite was one of the first games I ever played and I have spent tens of thousands hours in Elite, FE2, FFE, FFE3D and Oolite these last 30 years.
Having said that, I will not support an alpha/beta phase process that requires a ridiculous monetary sum for early access. You are essentially paying a lot of money to be a tester, that always felt wrong with me.
I understand why FD is doing that (you don't pay for access as a right, but as a priviledge for supporting the game financially), and I think its far better for the games' development process (the DDF archive is indicative of both the communication and development fusion process that Frontier Developments is sharing actively with their backers. Hell, the frame shift drive concept was essentially a player generated mechanic).
I also understand that they want to limit the number of testers so as to reduce feedback clutter and entitlement. Its a good strategy, but setting an economic barrier for it is not something I would support.
Regarding impact with EvE online, I sincerely think there won't be any, its like comparing apples to oranges. No game is ever going to reach the amount of player interaction and content generation as EvE online, and thats the meat and bones of the game right there. |

At this moment, my dogfighting skills are somewhat terrible. This is down, in my humble opinion, to the different options of controls not terribly well explained. Sure, if you're a pilot or flight enthusiast, the terms make perfect sense, but to me it's a case of trial and error.
I'm a mouse man myself, never could get my head around using joysticks, so practice makes perfect I guess! The radar is how you remember, so finding your target is easy, killing it is another story lol.
It's likely my "career" in Elite will feature minimal pvp, I was always a fan of the exploration and trade. We will see! |

What I am really fond of to say the truth from what we have seen until now is...the sound design. The engines, most of the weapons, the way external positional sound is emulated in the cockpit, binaural audio, the boosters etc etc
And the guys at Frontier Development still say that many of the sound effects in the game right now are just placeholders..just listen to this placeholder. http://youtu.be/RxX9JLEfJuA?t=36s |

I initially read and thought this meant it had a 6 degrees of freedom cockpit but after I read it I realized thats not what I'm thinking about.
Anyone know if it will or does have such a feature? 6DOF cockpits that is. I'm a trackIR user and any mention of 6DOF gets my attention. People, who talk, don't know. People, who know, don't talk.

Hello Commissar o7
Ships is Elite Dangerous have a newtonian flight model, with a fly-by-wire used to make the ship handle more stably. You can turn the fbw (its called flight assist) in the game off, thus getting the following freedom of movement
1. roll 2. pitch 3. yaw 4. strafe y axis 5. strafe x axis 6. throttle (forwards and backwards)
This gives you the opportunity to do some rather spiffing maneuvers, but you need a good hotas setup to make the most out of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KAJuR5giGo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vvl7uaR1sfI
Track-IR, 3d monitors and Occulus Rift are natively supported. Same goes for setups like X52, X55, Warthog, T16000 etc.
The Rift experience is considered the best there is right now (I have no idea whether is true though, take anything coming from reviewers with a grain of salt.). http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/12/20/elite-dangerous-oculus-rift/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wa5t87n3KhM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0UDLF-4uX0
The cockpits in the two ships that are released in the Alpha until now have a rather good FoV, if you take into account that you cannot look backwards..yet. Here is an example for the Sidewinder ship. http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20131124154051/elite-dangerous/images/d/d3/Cockpit_MESH_RENDER.png
An interesting feature for the game is that the cockpit configurations change according to the manufacturer, so there are many variations to choose from to customize a certain ship. At least...thats what they tell us is coming..XD http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130720171845/elite-dangerous/images/1/10/Asp_explorations.jpg |

I know most people are not as.....thrifty....... as I am, but this here kills it for me. The game look very very good. It's light-years ahead of that other multi-million dollar piece of vaporware. As long as they keep the production pace and quality control moving forward, I will pick up the full release. It just feels like their Alpha/Beta price point are just sticking it to the gamers. At least 240Gé¼ got you into a playable game and not a thousand dollar interactive screen saver.
My trolling aside, I support this game and hope it comes out in full retail soon I was hunting for sick loot, but all I could get my hands on were 50 corpses.............. |

Agreed. The only thing that makes the pain a little easier on the money front is that at least the lunatics that payed enough for the alpha view it as such, and not as an early access paywall. The amount of masochism is enhanced by the fact that they not only payed, but they also volunteered to help the devs in the Design Decision Forums, and the game will be better for it. You can view an archive here, there are some very meaty discussions there.

This is very true, and I think you can understand that by merely watching the two guys talking about their games. Braben is a down to earth English boffin that wants to make the ultimate Elite game, and Roberts is the American showman that adheres to the "rule of cool" mentality.
Hopefully both will succeed (I have backed both, and also this crazy Russian), its high time we got some more nice space-Sims to play while playing EvE...XD |

I think one of the best parts of Elite Dangerous is that it's NOT a spiritual successor to Elite. It's a new take on the original. Where SC is setting itself up to fail by promising unreasonably complex things in and taking their sweet time to deliver, it's possible to watch E:D grow and be built upon, and if you so choose to pay as a labour of love for a game a lot of people have waited a damn long time for, you get to play it in every step of its development and see it grow.
I haven't as of yet, but I'll definitely be buyig the game at some point before release just to help support it. And if I do? I get to play it, not get 'rewarded' by getting to listen to the SC devs make promises that would make Peter Molyneux take a step back, throw his hands into the air and proclaim "Whoaaa there, guys. Be reasonable with your promises." |

Hyperspace and in-system warp is completely free form. To go to a new system, you choose the star you wish to go to, align your ship to the star (have in mind that each and every dot you see in the starscape is an actual star(system), not something painted for kicks), and engage your hyperdrive. You enter hyperspace and emerge somewhere (random and completely impossible to predict) close to the star in cruise mode.
In system cruise mode is also free-form, with the maximum speed being sth like 2500 times the speed of light (search Alcubierre Drive for reference). You actually move your ship when using it (there will be an autopilot of course as an upgrade later if you like). |

Thank you for putting this together Bertrand. Elite has grabbed my interest!
I love EvE, but for me EvE has a very limited feel. I can't get out of my Captain's quarters, I can't fly down to planets to explore and other activities, I can only warp to particular preset places (planets, moons, stations etc), have to go through star gate pipes to get anywhere, there are a limited number of stars with the vast majority in the iron grip of player hogs...
After playing EvE for 10 years now it all feels like a tiny, uninteresting box with nothing to do.
The first game that gives me a truly immersive, open ended, unlimited feel... I'll be playing it. Daniel Zehn Keeper of Evil Frosty
