First things first. I'm a Linux/Ubuntu novice. I've tried it a few times before but always went back begrudgingly to windows.
This time I'm determined to make Ubuntu work.
I downloaded/installed the new Ubuntu LTS (14.04).
used the system settings thing to update to the nvidia drivers they had listed (331.xx I think)
Used the software center to install wine (also installed winetricks).
I can launch and log into EvE, but if I open a window, like say planet view for PI when I close it the game crashes on me.
If I just sit and don't do anything it seems to be o.k.
I'm just using the EvE icon on my desktop to launch, and I've seen some posts here with what looks to be a command line, do I need to use that instead?
Any help would be really appreciated

not entirely sure, it's whatever the package manager installs. How do I check? |

You might want to get used to the terminal (afforementioned command line interface). It's the most powerful tool you have in your Linux OS.
Launch whatever Terminal your OS comes with (probably "Gnome-Terminal" or just "Terminal" in your menu and type in:
this will tell you what version of wine you have. not using ubuntu my guess would be 1.6.2, which should work.
Next thing you will want to try is launch eve from the terminal to see the output, because it might contain an error message or any kind of information to help us help you. Depending on how/where you installed Eve it's probably something like this (your paths may be different)
Quote:wine 'C:\Program Files(x86)\CCP\Eve\eve.exe'
you can also use your actual linux filesystem path:
Quote:wine '~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files(x86)/CCP/Eve/eve.exe'
Then play Eve until it crashes and copy the terminal output. If it's a very long output, please don't paste it here, use pastebin.com instead. |

I would suspect it's your graphics driver, so make sure you have the right one installed. This is the most difficult part of a linux install, really. Just make sure you double check it. You can find it with lspci:
$ lspci | grep -i vga 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GT218 [GeForce 210] (rev a2)
Also, turn off captains quarters, which yo ucan do from the title screen under settings.
In eve settings, before you login, clear your cache and try it again.
Also, see my 12.04 instructions on how to bypass the launcher when you don't need it. |

Yes, it is. And from the looks of it, in some cases it's more stable than the Windows version. I hear the latest patch causing crashes for many people on Windows. I had none. |

I just joined EVE, last week, and started from day one with UBUNTU 14.04 and first install it directly on wine and worked like a charm just I had to disable Captain's Quarters and ran very stable.
But I migrated it to playonlinux, just because switching wine versions is easier to test, but it is running very stable and graphic performance is running even better than in windows which I tested.
running everything on High, just disabled shadows which it always takes a toll in video performance.

For beginners with Linux/Ubuntu "Playonlinux" have an fully working installing routine for EVE. Just install it over your Softwaremanager and install EVE, it is recommered to download the offlineinstaller first. My last seen into it, is come with the last stable wine version for EVE and setup a full config/wineprefix with Desktopstarters and so on.

I just upgraded my three linux boxes to 14.04 with wine-1.7.17, and they each work perfectly out of the box, even with the launcher. Winetricks no longer needed.
Box 1: desktop with an oldish screen and NVIDIA 8800 GTX.
Box 2: beefy laptop (660m) with a 24" HDMI-connected 1920x1200 outboard screen
Box 3: Acer Chromebook C720 running 14.04 with Crouton on medium/low settings. This was the surprise - works fine on L4 missions, mining and PI as well as everything else I've tried. |
