My opinion of the cretin who did this should be obvious.
From a more meta perspective, those who hold that there should not be a line between in-game and out-of-game interactions related to EVE (in particular, defenders of such bullsh*t as the Bonus Room) should perhaps reflect upon their positions. At a certain point, it stops being a game.
That out of the way, I would like to take a moment to thank Xenuria for something he did (he knows what) that started a sequence of events that resulted in much happiness for someone I love. It was just one of those butterfly-effect things EVE is so famous for.

It is true that there are scratch resistant coatings available and nitride coatings spring to mind in this context. However, they tend to be designed for incidental abrasion events, rather than deliberate acts of vandalism.

CCP Falcon wrote:So, there's a couple of things going to happen in this thread right now:
- First - People are going to stop pointing fingers and blaming people. CCP will investigate and take any action against game accounts, along with any legal action that we feel necessary. This is already in progress.
- Second - This is damage of public property in the City of Reykjavik. The police have been informed, and investigation is ongoing. This is not a laughing matter, and will be dealt with as a criminal offence. We are currently reviewing security footage from a number of surrounding buildings.
- Third - People will stop attacking the victim of this on our forums. It's not funny, it's not clever. Take your rumor mongering and personal attacks away from our community. If you choose not to, you'll be removed from the community, permanently. It's a simple as that. We will not tolerate victimization.
What's happened is absolutely disgusting. It's an insult to the entire community and is clearly the work a person who believes that behavior in a virtual world is a valid reason to make a real life personal attack on someone, and deface public property. We will not tolerate this. Thankfully we've already had a number of players come forward to assist us and provide information. Including, we believe, members of the person's own alliance. Thankfully the vast majority of the rest of the community are in the same frame of mind as CCP - disgusted at the fact that someone would do this, and we're extremely grateful for your assistance. With that in mind, I'll make a simple one time offer, that if the person who defaced the monument wants to come forward and contact me relating to this, then they can do so by EVE mailing my Dev character. If this happens, we'll take it as a gesture of good faith after an extremely stupid act that was committed. With this in mind, be sure to keep this thread on topic, and cut out the personal attacks and finger pointing. People who break the rules will lose their forum posting privileges. Permanently. Thanks.
It is sad that people cannot separate themselves from a game and I'm glad CCP is working with the Police to take action against the person who did this. Might I suggest adding in cameras around the monument? |

While true, there are a few pics going around of incidental damage as well.

The average age of an Eve Online player is, I believe, around the 30 mark.
Perhaps CCP believed that a protective covering for the monument was not necessary.

Hard, yes. Corrosive-resistant, also yes.
The problem with glass is that it is also brittle and tends to produce surgically sharp edges when shattered. Also, slippery when wet.
I'm thinking the city of Reykjavik probably DON'T want a monument where if somebody falls over on it while wearing goth pants, that person goes to the hospital looking like they just picked a fight with Freddy Krueger. Quote: 2. Be respectful toward others at all times.
The purpose of the EVE Online forums is to provide a platform for exchange of ideas, and a venue for the discussion of EVE Online. Occasionally there will be conflicts that arise when people voice opinions. Forum users are expected to be courteous when disagreeing with others.
4. Personal attacks are prohibited.
Commonly known as flaming, personal attacks are posts that are designed to personally berate or insult another forum user. Posts of this nature are not beneficial to the community spirit that CCP promote and as such they will not be tolerated.
5. Trolling is prohibited.
Trolling is a defined as a post that is deliberately designed for the purpose of angering and insulting other players in an attempt to incite retaliation or an emotional response. Posts of this nature are disruptive, often abusive and do not contribute to the sense of community that CCP promote.
11. Discussion of forum moderation is prohibited.
The discussion of EVE Online forum moderation actions generally leads to flaming, trolling and baiting of our ISD CCL moderators. As such, this type of discussion is strictly prohibited under the forum rules. If you have questions regarding the actions of a moderator, please file a petition under the Community & Forums Category.
22. Post constructively.
Negative feedback can be very useful to further improve EVE Online provided that it is presented in a civil and factual manner. All users are encouraged to honestly express their feelings regarding EVE Online and how it can be improved. Posts that are non-constructive, insulting or in breach of the rules will be deleted regardless of how valid the ideas behind them may be. Users are also reminded that posting with a lack of content also constitutes non-constructive posting.
31. Rumor mongering is prohibited.
Rumor threads and posts which are based off no actual solid information and are designed to either troll or annoy other users will be locked and removed. These kinds of threads and posts are detrimental to the wellbeing and spirit of the EVE Online Community, and can create undue panic among forum users, as well as adding to the workload of our moderators.
Thread has been cleaned up as per the above rules. Also:
CCP Falcon wrote:First - People are going to stop pointing fingers and blaming people. It has been cleaned up as per the line drawn by CCP Falcon. I strongly advise not treading on CCP's toes around this issue, as it is no joke and no laughing matter. Point of fact, I've had people try major vandalism on my house. It did not work. I was smart enough to invest in bulletproof coverings for my stained glass windows. If you just assume it's going to happen, it's not really hard to take preventative measures.
To make reference to Dindsales joke earlier, my house fits a tank.

So you have bullet proof windows yet it's other people who have issues?
I've been subject to actual death threats from felons I've arrested and I don't have bullet proof windows dude. At some point (hopefully) a person should come to the conclusion that it's not the rest of the universe that is cracked.

No, in this case it's common sense. The stained glass windows are 20 feet tall, and cost 30k dollars each, at a discount. Imagine a bird hitting that, or, (as I live about five doors from a school) the more typical punk kid throwing rocks. |

Serious mental issues? OK, Doctor... if you say so. I'm just this guy, you know, but my personal experience is that the Eve community is as diverse as any other part of life. So it's not surprising there are one among us that is rotten enough to vandalize like this. That said I *am* surprised and shocked that such a person would take the time to get to Iceland to meet other players, devs and generally celebrate the game and still be incapable to distinguish between the game and real life. |
