I picked Caldari a long time ago, and like most new players to the game we didn't know what was what. We only had the race description, and frankley the Caldari have the best description. The come accross as capitalist, hard, battlehardened, tough, relentless sobs. With the Tough as nails special forces appearence. I mean come on. It's not about missles vs. Turrets, or easiest to train for. blah blah. Any character can train for anything. and unless you're creating an alt you don't know what's what for a while. It's about how the race looks, and what is said about them.

your absolutly right
i just started this game myself, and i'm clueless when it comes to whats what, i dont want to bother trading or researching, i want to fly around blow stuff up
so i pick the navy looking guys, because:
i'm not big on robes and religion so the Amarr totaly blew me off the Minmatar (spelling?)'s description seems to show that there not exactly all that advanced and that well... there is no certainty with them and the Gallatian (again, spellign) just seem to peace loving for a war filled game :)
plus if the missile guys bug you so much, get a fast ship and close in with blasers... ive learned that much flying around with blasters until i got my missile skills trained

I pretty much chose Civire on looks too, though if I'd gotten a male character I might have chosen differently. The other thing I looked at was fairly balanced stats since I didn't know how to min/max or what I wanted to do exactly.
As far as the description goes, I'd have chosen a Minmatar or maybe Gallente if I'd based my decision on that.
Once I started the game, I found out I loved the look and feel of the Minnie frigs, and I sorta wish I'd started that way instead. But it's pretty cool flying chewing gum and shoestring in Caldari starting space. * * *
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Like the OP, I too chose the Caldari race based on their description.. However, I do know how to fly both Caldari ships and their "racial enemies'" ships.. Gallente :)
But that's because of the way I play my char.. :)

They're also the first race on the selection screen. They would be popular with people picking the first they see, not knowing what to choose otherwise. |

I don't really think this is an often case. If the icons were top down yes but being arranged left right, its really even and the first thing you see when you click to make a new character is either amarr or minmatar at the center of the screen.
Honestly, I almost went for gallente because I thought the characters on the gallente icon looked cool. But when I went to make a character, I couldn't make a gallente character that looked decent at all. I found that Caldari out of all races look the most "normal"

I picked caldari based on the description when i first started. But then I saw that amarr had hoodies!! and then minmatar had aviators!! I felt very ripped off, but anyway i never even bothered training very far with caldari. Currently i fly amarr ships and minmatar industrials. I wish there was an option to change your race, even if it's just the picture and the stats remain the same.

I think the OP is right.
I almost chose Caldari when I started then I went with Minmatar because I liked the "fight the system" attitude.
The descriptins probably need a rewrite in order to get better balanced populations.
-The Minmatar sound second best compared to the Caldari, but they have loser/hobo, feel from the description.
-The Gallente sound like touchy feely wimps sort of.
-The Amar sound like bullies.
Wherever you went - here you are.

I chose Amarr just because of the description. They seemed to be the only race that had some balls, and that pulling some nice RP out of looked much easier.
Now, for my Achura alty, I used ...other... features to make my choice

yup, that's why I chose Caldari. From reading what is available to you as a nub at char creation you get the idea that Caldari are very proficient at fighting, they get high willpower and perception and since there's no single line at char creation explaining what attributes do they seemed to start off with the right attributes as well.
Quote: Civire are cool, levelheaded, and relentless in their approach to either trading or fighting. Civire can handle pressure extremely well, an invaluable aid in combat or other stressful situations. Many of the best bounty hunters are Civire.
Quote: Attribute Explanations Intelligence - describes the capacity for creative and logic-based thinking and reasoning. This attribute helps in scientific pursuits and other activities that require good deductive skills.
Charisma - is a character's attractiveness to others. A high charisma attribute helps in all dealings with NPCs.
Perception - describes a character's situational awareness and ability to adapt and react quickly to rapidly changing situations. Good perception helps on the battlefield and in situations where good reflexes are critical.
Memory - is the ability to store and retrieve data quickly and efficiently thus making complex and repetitive activities, such as manufacturing and production, easier to perform.
Willpower - is the drive and determination useful for commanders, greatly enhancing their leadership abilities.
There you have it, my dear Missile- and Caldari-Haters. The reasons why there's a high Caldari population do not lie within the uber superiorness of missiles and neither in the "need zero SP to pwn" - Raven.
Thanks for bringing that up Kelgen. If CCP would change the descriptions and attribute explanations the server population should slowly even out. I know such stuff isn't critical, but hey, every damn patch we get a new and improved EVE-FontÖ, re-writing these things should take an hour max.
Hrm... thinking back I can vaguely remember seeing a picture of a Merlin and thinking "hey, that thing rocks!"... so if you want to even out the population even faster, show pictures of the Moa, the Osprey, the Blackbird, the Scorpion, ...

I chose Caldari based on the description. I'm something of a fan of cyberpunk-esque settings. Gallente struck me as 'fluffy idealists' Amarr 'religious nutters' and minmatar as 'ex slaves with a chip on the shoulder'.
Oh, and had the advantage of 'normal' avatars. Amarr had 'can't see me' and 'omg deformed boiled egg' and 'mr angry' Minmatar had frankensteins children and sorry, but all the Gallente blokes look a bit camp.
Ok, that's not to say the Caldari male portrait is impossible to 'get wrong' it's just I found it far easier to get an avatar I wanted to play that way. -- We are recruiting |

That may be the reason why you chose Caldari, but trust me most MMO players read the forums and choose which ever is the easiest/most popular/most ubber/etc. _________ in the game. It is the same for all MMOs. One aspect gets labeled as the in thing to do/have and the sheeple herd follows in suit.

They really need to put pictures of the ships you'll be flying under the various Empires. I bet you would have a significant difference in most people's initial race selection.

Three reasons for my choice:
1) Chose Gallente because the description had them beating the much larger Amarr empire, and by the way.. Who is it that controls Caldari Prime? Whimpy? I don't think so.
2 I had a character in mind and Gallente let me get the picture closest to that mental image.
3) I was unsure what I wanted to do and I managed a very balanced stat set with Intaki.

That hit the nail right on the head. When I started I didn't know anything so it was a purely aesthetic choice (of course this was all down to avatar looks and before I'd seen the Caldari ships - some of them are dog ugly).
So its not "omg Caldari players choze 1337 uber skillz race to ftwbbqpwn", its just more people want to be military industrialist, than slaver nutter, ex-slave sulker, or French.
