Hey Everyone.
I decided to get back into EvE after a couple of years as a new toon. (Since I gave my Null sec corp/capital ship toon to my brother who enjoys that sort of stuff still). I want to focus on just the PvE since I'm still very burned out on Null sec corp warfare. Exploration is new and interesting to me so I want to get into that. However I'm not sure what ship path to go on. I read that the Caldari ships are best since shield tanking is superior for exploration and the Tengu is the ship I should strive for.
What do you guys think? Should I aim for Sisters of Eve? Amarr or Caldari ships? Right now I'm training Heron -> Buzzard -> Tengu path, but starting to have doubts and it's never too late to change skill paths.
Thanks!
(PS: Not sure what's the correct forum to post this in, let me know if there's a better place) |

I guess the first question I have is simple: what do you mean by exploration? Do you want to run professional sites, combat sites, or both? Do you want to be in high, low, or null? Or wormholes? Do you know what rats you're looking at? If you honestly don't know the answer to any of that... sure, get a Tengu. It's serviceable at all of it. I'm not sure it's the best anywhere at the moment but it's very flexible. About the only place it's really hobbled it high sec since you can't take it in to anything lower than a 5/10, but you will have a Cerberus for that along the way, so.....
However, if you have more specific plans then there are better options out there. I haven't been in a Tengu in months at this point. |

I guess I'm looking at being able to do Combat, hacking and relic sites. Most of all I want to be able to experience all the new content in the last couple of years.
The guides I've read states Tengu is the best due to tanking abilities, but I'm starting to hear that it's lack of drones is pretty harmful and very expensive route (Skill and isk wise).
In my previous toon, I was a fan of Amarr ships; primarily due to looks. However I also liked passive shield tanking which Amarr doesn't do to well. I remember being annoyed at relying on drones since it hurts when they die and managing them can be a pain.
When you say stuck at high sec, is it mainly due to the high price tag?

Personally for High/LS I used to use a Pilgrim, active Armor Tanked, enough mids for the exploration Modules, and a sizable drone bay to have additional drones for a long session flying about. Not sure about the higher end Combat Sigs but the ability to book mark them and then grab a larger/tougher ship to run them more efficiently is still always an option. |

Tengu can't run any combats native to high sec; no T3 can. 4/10s are the highest that spawn there and 5/10s are the lowest a T3 can enter. Likewise, a T3 is absolute overkill for just professional sites, especially if you're sticking to high.
If you want to go to low, sure, get a T3. If you want to go to low and don't know which space you'll end up in, a Tengu isn't a bad option. However, if you know you're headed to Blood/Sansha low you might want a Legion instead. A Proteus also works fine (but drones, and if you don't like those it probably isn't the best choice).
You could also look at a Stratios (but, again, drones) for low or high as it can enter 4/10s (and 3/10s). 1-6 all spawn in low so you could also viably take a frigate out and make money there on combats. |

Ishtar hands down. Only disadvantage is that it doesnt have scan bonuses and no covops cloak, if you scan with a covops and/or have an alt for scouting and scanning, the Ishtar performs better than Tengu in combat sites.
In my area, I scan the surrounding systems with a covops, save the locations and dispatch the (combat) sites in rapid order with Ishtar - fly to 60, deploy sentries, blap everything. I don't even use a real tank, usually a hardener and 2 large shield extenders are enough. Just stay in range and MWD to a further location if the damage starts to add up. With the introduction of Gecko the Ishtar is really obscene, I do selectable battleship-grade damage while being highly mobile and can choose my range. |

It's pretty impressive what a little imicus with prototype cloak is able to accomplish when you get down to it. A ship like that can do fine in most of null or low and you are putting very little at risk.
That being said training for astero --> stratios is a very strong (but expensive) route and is very quick to get into. Otherwise you can just train cov ops and do data/relic and get whatever combat ships you need for combat sites -- anything that works in missions more or less. |
