Can anyone please suggest good/reliable alternatives to the Eve Intergalactic Bank please?
(No, not players' pockets... just banks...!)

I attempted to start a pawnshop a while back, however there were trust issues. If you need isk and have something valuable to offer as collateral Ill be willing to discuss, feel free to eve-mail.

You could try this one for investments: http://emfi.blogspot.com/
Then there's stuff like this: http://www.geocities.com/currintrading/. But it's high risk/high reward.
Or you can browse the market discussions forum.
Simple rule though, if you can't afford to lose the money, don't invest.
