Hi all,
I was wondering if it is possible to automatically download portraits in-game? For a while I have been clicking on people in the chat channels but with so many players, it would take forever to get them all. Is there a way to do this automatically or if not, is it possible to share the downloaded portrait files of veteran players? (Small issue I know but the chat channels looks so much better when you can see avatars)

That's exactly why there is no auto-download. The strain on the servers in large channels would kill your client and the servers. Imagine joining say Rookie Help, 2500 players and as soon as you join you'd have to download 2500 pictures from the servers. Than realize that each of those 2500 players would also be downloading 2500 pictures. Everytime someone new joined that'd be another 5000 pictures downloaded (2500 for the guy joining and 1 for each of the 2500 already in the channel of the guy that joined). Nightmare. -- Lil Miner |

You are right. I have just found the cache folder and with over 1000 portraits, it is 20mb in size.
I guess I will have to make do with the blank portraits. It is a very strange system though.

Think of it like this, Your speaking to the Passing By Pilots through voice-link not visual link. Just a way of justifying not seeing everyones face. --------------------

Two points: 1) Remember that every chat channel beyond a certain size doesn't show the portraits of all channel members, only the ones currently active. Even maintaining a list of 2500 channel members is too much work, let alone portraits, so this wouldn't be too bad. 2) I use portrait memory to remind me of which people I have seen before. It's an added level of instant recognition, below putting someone in my addressbook.
