What characteristics do I want in a missile launcher? I'm currently looking at light missile launchers to fit to my Corax but it seems that the only difference between launchers are rate of fire. Sure, there are some CPU and other differences but this is more of a fitting issue I guess.
Comparing an Experimental TE-2100 that has 20tf and 12.75s RoF vs. the Limited "Limos" that has 19tf and 13.50s RoF, is the TE-2100 hands-down the better launcher due primarily to the lower RoF? However, at about 720,000 ISK, the TE-2100 is much more expensive than the Limos that comes in at 248,000 ISK per launcher. Do I want to spend 3x more per launcher for a 0.75sec advantage?
Or do I just say "fk it!!!" and get the launcher I can afford (best value for money considering I may very well have to replace it) and just get the best missiles I can afford? Then again, looking at the standard light missile selection, all of them have the same flight time and velocity, same explosion velocity and radius too... the only difference would be the type of damage dealt.
So I'm confused now. Assuming I can fit whatever missile I want in my Corax, with a TE-2100 + Inferno light missile have the EXACT SAME characteristics as a Limos + Inferno light missile ---- the only difference being the TE-2100 can spit out more missile and therefore have a bit higher DPS? |

I think you're generally on the right track. With missiles, the launchers are going to determine fitting requirements, number of missiles that can be loaded into the launcher at one time, reload speed, and firing speed (part of your dps) while the missiles themselves are going to determine damage (the other part of your dps) and max range. You'll want to vary which missiles you use based on the enemies you face in a particular mission - explosive against angels, EM against blood raiders / sansha's, for example. The selective damage type is one of the reasons missiles are good in PvE missions.
You're generally correct when you observe that meta 4 launchers provide a small benefit and significantly higher cost over meta 3 launchers. If you are using your corax for level 1 missions, the meta 3 launcher is perfectly sufficient.
It is advisable to spend the extra money for meta 4 launchers on a level three or four mission ship, one which you have a relatively small chance of losing, but don't want to train the skills necessary for T2 missile launchers. |

Copy/pasting an earlier post of mine since you are comparing meta items:
Tech 1 and Tech 2 modules are created by players. There are other mods called "meta" modules or "named" modules which are dropped by npcs and can't be made by players. If you click the "attributes" tab in the info window you can see the "meta number" which gives you a rough idea how effective the module is.
Here is the order:
-Tech 1 (Meta 0) -Meta 1 -Meta 2 -Meta 3 -Meta 4 -Tech 2 (Meta 5) -Storyline, Faction, Deadspace, Officer (meta 6 - 14)
For a new player, fitting "meta" mods is very useful. The Meta 1-4 modules only require the skills of the tech 1 variant, but give better performance. Sometimes the meta 4 version is actually slightly better than tech 2. In most cases, the meta modules are also easier to fit with respect to CPU and powergrid so they are sometimes used by players than can use tech 2 variants but have tight fitting requirements.
If you aren't sure which module to buy, select any of them and show info. Then go to the variations tab and click compare to compare the statistics of each. Sort by meta number and first look at the attribute you are interested in (HP for a shield extender for example). Then compare the CPU and powergrid needs and choose the one that best suits your needs. www.ensignyooch.wordpress.com

Keeping in mind that DPS is proportional to RoF makes the calculation straightforward; the higher meta modules are not only (generally) easier to fit, they have an easily calculable DPS boost. Additionally, they also hold more missiles, reducing the DPS hit during reload.
In the case of LMLs, the Meta 4 and Meta 3 have a base RoF of 12s, while the Meta 2 launcher is at 13. The Meta 4 launcher holds 0.72 m^3 of missiles and the Meta 3 0.69.
When your skills are very good then a 8% DPS difference as between the Meta 2 and 3 launchers is a very big deal. Less so when you still have skills to train that can help make up that difference, but it is *always* still better. You just need to decide how much.
Another thing to note is that you should be using faction ammo. That's the easiest DPS boost you can give yourself.
If I was going to make a recommendation while you are skilling up, I would suggest going with the meta 3 LMLs with faction ammo. You get the fitting advantages (as I am guessing your fitting skills are still bad), the nice RoF, and a good damage boost without having to pay the premium for the Arbalests. |

Beware that module tieracide is coming.
That will mean every module will be useful, but different.
Right now it is basically the highest meta you can afford / fit, or T2. The rest are generally for niche fits or people that don't lose ships very often, and can afford to replace expensive modules. |

Thanks for the confirmation guys. Indeed, I can see how the higher Meta stuff is better, but I cannot see how it justifies the jump in price. If I was doing PvP and every little bit counts, then yeah, fair enough. But for mission running in PvE, well, it's a different story, isn't it? |

Meta thing pricing is in a strange place. The supply is entirely random (based off drops) so it's going to be odd.
Missile launchers are in a stranger place. Most modules just get better as the meta level goes up. Missile launchers vary.
The CPU usage is all over the place, with the meta 1 being the easiest, and the meta 3 being the second hardest.

True for PvP, but if the OP is using her Corax to run level 1 missions faction ammo is a big waste of money. You might be spending more in ammo than you make from the entire mission. |
