Hey I've been away from EVE for a while and I'd like to know what the current meta or even viability for hunting ratters in 0.0 space is. Preferably solo in a frigate.
When I left stealthbombers were quite viable with the right target selection, but also all kinds of combat interceptors and other small stuff, most notably the Taranis. But I've heard of several changes in the last years, like NPC aggression, mobile structures and countless balance tweaks and I wonder how this changed the general hunting landsscape.
So, are there still people who go out and hunt ratters solo or is it all either 2bil cloaky T3 or afk-cloaking-with-cyno nowadays ? |

Well NPC aggro makes it harder.
But super fast warping, bubble immune inties make it easier.

There was a bit of a golden age in ratter ganking back when Attack Battlecruisers were the ratting ship of choice; they were paper thin and barely capable of surviving the anomaly itself, their large guns couldn't track smaller targets at all, and the closest thing they had to a defense mechanism was a flight of light drones from the Talos. It probably also helped that the anomalies they ran had no frigate rats, so NPC aggro wouldn't have been too consequential for smaller gankers. You could kill them with pretty much anything, and Stealth Bombers were highly popular.
Nowadays, the typical ratter is a much, much harder target. Ravens and Dominixes (or Armageddons) are very popular and very difficult to kill. You're looking at weapon systems that are perfectly capable of applying damage to smaller targets, an MJD that lets them escape unless you close to scram range, and heavy neuts that ensure you probably don't want to go there. Your Vagabond isn't going to hold that down, much less your Taranis, and that's assuming they aren't just ratting aligned.
Deklein is filled with some easier targets in our Ishtars, but even those require pretty specific hardware to take down. A 100mn AB Cruiser with Heavy Drones will straight up kill a Bomber or close-range frigate without any player intervention (people coming back to the keyboard to find bomber wrecks in their anomalies was a regular occurrence until the hunters wised up), and the fits often include warp core stabilizers that will get them away from a long-point Cynabal or what have you. |

No one does cloaky T3s anymore given how crappy they are at it. Currently, a matching stealthbomber (purifier in the east/north, hound in the south/west) are the smartest choice avaiable. Without effort you can get up to 700-800dps using ragetorps, melting ratting battleships shortly after they managed to finally lock you. Since you're just a frigate, you usually draw little to no agression.
Corpmate until recently flew a pimped ~1000dps purifier with good success down in esoteria/feytha. "I honestly thought I was in lowsec"
