Wouldnt it be possible to make the client cache user made stuff only at start up and not during game play?
Client should probably also have custom settings in the client preferences for it, if it should at all cache user made contents and if so, at what interval.
Nose art and custom skins ftw - but sure, I can see a number of issues with it...

In early beta we had a paintshop, but it caused too much lag in space afai remember so it was removed.
I remember a dev hinting we might get corp and alliance logos on our ships though.

Well back in beta, you didn't have the fancy new "yarrdware". Might work now. --------------------------------------------------------------------

neither did you have 25000 users logged on at the same time. won't work, too much lag for a tbh. useless feature ---

Edited by: Xelios on 03/06/2006 16:53:00 I dunno, it might work if the ship just has a color code attribute attached to it, then the client renders a color layer over top of the textures. Would cause a ton of graphics lag in busy places but shouldn't impact network lag too much, it'd have to be toggleable though cause I doubt lower end computers could render color layers over 300 ships at once on top of everything else =/
TBH it wouldn't be worth the effort, I'd be happy with the updated textures coming out.

I don't see what difference it would make. I don't remember the last time I looked at someone else's ship close up, so it doesn't matter what colour it is.

How would you tell a Nighthawk from a Ferox then?

Well what about WWII style markings on ships, the used to paint the outline of their kills onto their planes, why not with our ships? It wouldnt have any gameplay effect apart from having a mining barge with a few interceptor kill painted on the side would make a point, and it would also attach some meaning to each ship, because at the moment they feel so sterile. It could ofcouse be exploited by blwoing up a mates ship, but as it would have no actual game value. |

If you're using binoculars to identify spaceships you're not making the best use of the technology at hand.

this does not cause lag, those who think it does are wrong. hull color would just require and extra tidbit of data for the RGB values. the hard data is still client side.
just do like SWG and limit the number of custom textures and colors to set patterns therefore the system only needs to send a texture ID number and color info. very small bits of info.

Just being able to change color shouldn't be hard to do nor should it really cause any lag. Besides if it did, hell, why not just make it so that you can change the ship color but it only shows the new color on YOUR screen, I'd be OK with that Some ships are just of such a crappy color it's no fun. Like Ishkur yucky green compared to Enyo ebil red

Sorry to bump this old topic, but I'd definitely love to see this. I'm willing to sit through the lag if it means my ship would be slightly more distinguishable than the next person's. It adds to the feeling of realism and individuality. And perhaps add an option to toggle.
Hell, even if it's just a few blanket colors. Nothing fancy. So the ship models come in red, blue, green, or black. ANYTHING. I'm BEGGING you devs. Throw us SOMETHING, PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE.
Honestly, I can say that this is the only thing I find negative about EVE. All the ships look the same, because.. well, they are.
